Making a 12 hour drive alone soon. Please help me stay awake.

I’ve got playlists queued up but once I start zoning out on those, would love a good audiobook to listen to! I love mysteries and things with plot twists. If you were able to fully predict the ending, it’s probably not the one for me. The last audiobook that kept me fully hooked was Mystic River. I’ve only done a couple of audiobooks ever and admittedly don’t read much, just don’t have much time for it anymore unfortunately, so whatever you recommend will probably be new to me!

Also probably something with a good, not very monotone narrator, for the sake of staying awake. I might split up the drive halfway through, tbd, but either way several hours of driving ahead ugh.

Making a 12 hour drive alone soon. Please help me stay awake

Looking for good podcasts for a long long drive. I love mysteries, including true crime, but not the ones that reveal the killer/criminal right away and then spend the rest of the podcast talking about how they figured it out. Some of those are ok but the more interesting ones tend to be the one where I’m figuring it out along the way. Any suggestions? I know there are a ton of “best true crime” posts on here but not so many that fit that specific request. (And please none that are still completely unsolved lol I want justice)

I also like horror and haven’t ever listened to a horror podcast, so those would be good as well!

Or any that are just kind of wild stories like the woman who pretended to have cancer for several years and all the lies she told. Scamanda I think?

I might end up stopping halfway through this drive, tbd, but either way lots of hours of driving ahead.

Edited to add I’ve already finished Bear Brook, Bone Valley, In the Dark, Your Own Backyard, and Hunting Warhead. I see those recommended a ton, so wanted to go ahead and cross them off the list!

What’s a (lighthearted) read from this sub that lives in your head rent-free?

Rewatching season 10 right now and am haunted by someone in a comment years ago saying Blair looks like a murderous Elf on a Shelf. Literally cannot see her one time without thinking about it. What's your favorite comment or description of a queen and their antics from this sub that you will never forget? (But let’s keep it classy, nothing too mean)

Song from a movie. What is the movie.

Sorry for terrible details here but there’s a song in a movie, all I really remember is it’s a female voice and some of the lyrics are like “you can break me/shake me/take me/shame me (I don’t remember which), try to shake me/shame me/take me (again dont remember which lol I just remember the long A sound), still I'm there for you/care for you” and I don’t remember this being a particularly romantic vibe, I think it was more on the creepy side? It’s a slower song. It is driving me crazy. There is also a chance it was a tv show but it would’ve been a more serious show if so. Maybe horror or just mysterious, definitely a sort of dark vibe, nowhere in the realm of sitcom etc. Whatever it is I know I have seen it multiple times but it is not coming to me and it is driving me nuts.

Edit for additional detail: the song is being sung by a character in the movie/show, so it’s not just background. The song being sung is a plot point. I have a vague mental picture of a white woman holding a microphone. I dont remember who the actress was though

Please help

Being CC has made getting sick feel very shameful

I am currently on day three of a sore throat with no other symptoms. I don’t have reason to believe it’s definitely COVID. I mask everywhere with N95s and hardly go anywhere, COVID levels are pretty low right now, and this is the only symptom I’m feeling, so altogether there's chance it’s something else, but I found myself not wanting to mention it to anyone. All my friends, family, and coworkers know me as that person who still masks (I work from home 95% of the time but have to be in person occasionally), and the only way I can sort of justify it in a way that makes sense to them is by mentioning that I haven’t been sick in years although they’ve all had bouts of various viruses. Now I feel like if I am not perfect then everyone will think see I told you that’s why masking isn’t worth it and I’m being careful for no reason. I was going to FaceTime with my brother last night but canceled I don’t want to talk a lot, but I didn’t want to admit my throat hurts, so I just lied and said I had to work. There are so many ways being CC has made me feel like I have to be perfect - either perfect enough for the CC community not to judge me for taking any slight risks or perfect enough for my family to maybe feel like I’m onto something by continue to be careful. If I ever have any symptoms of anything, I feel like such a failure.

Not to mention perfect enough for me to not kick myself if I start feeling the slightest bit sick. Any time I take any level of risk like having an unmasked outdoor conversation and then feel the slightest bit under the weather within the next week or so I beat myself up for taking the risk and just picture fellow CC people judging me for being unmasked at all.

I don’t have a point. Just venting about how exhausting it all is. People think it’s hard continuing to mask, but the mask wearing itself is the easiest part for me. The hard part is everything else.

That time the judges called the singer’s ex-wife….

Watching season 18 right now and just got to the episode where the singer told everyone he still loved his ex wife and wanted her back and wrote a song about her, and Heidi decided to facetime her on national television and have her watch her ex sing about how much he loved her. I can’t find the thread for this episode from when it originally aired but….other people thought this was an awful thing to do right? Sounds like she was the one who wanted the divorce more, so now you’ve got this famous judge and an audience of thousands of people telling you what a great catch he is and trying to pressure you into getting back with him while he looks like a sad puppy. I would be mortified. Plus we know what people do in the social media age when someone breaks the heart of a fan favorite. Off to her social media accounts to tell her how wrong she is for not giving him another chance. Idk if this actually happened and idk if he even makes it to the next round, I got a few seasons behind so this is my first time seeing this one, but my god if I called it quits with someone and he got on stage to tell the whole country how much he wanted me back and I had to sit there and watch it (cause who’s going to hang up on Heidi Klum while you know you’re being recorded) on camera, I don’t know if I'd be more embarrassed or creeped out or angry. I’m not the only one who felt this way right? Did others perceive this as cute and romantic when it first aired?

I ordered a burger and tater tots from a restaurant last night. The food arrived on time, the order was correct, and the dasher delivered in the correct location.

I ordered from a nearby restaurant I like. The app gave me a timeframe when the order would arrive, and it gave me the usual notifications to say the dasher was at the restaurant, was on the way, etc. I tipped when I place the order. At no point did the dasher contact me to beg for an extra tip or to say anything weird or threatening. They didn’t call to ask for directions, and they delivered it right where I wanted, and it was on time. Then they left. When I got the food, the order was correct, it was still warm, and it tasted good. Then I threw away the trash and moved on with my life.

This was a pretty typical experience. There was no reason to tell anyone about it because there were no issues and it wasn’t an interesting story. 98% of my orders go this way. This post might not get much engagement cause who cares. Just sharing as a counterpoint to all the people saying “why do you people keep ordering doordash?? it’s nothing but unlimited problems!!” Most people’s orders are this unexciting but this is a weird post to see here because there is very little reason to talk about it here, so you don’t see that most people’s orders are fine. I’m not saying those bad things don’t happen; all delivery apps have those issue at some point. But it’s a small fraction of all the orders they receive.

Please God use some critical thinking and stop posting that same “why are you still using this app??” over and over again. I use it cause sometimes I am tired or busy or lazy or not feeling well and it’s a successful and easy way for me to get dinner.

Impossible to get refund for a venmo payment?

I ordered 3 small items from home depot and paid via venmo, linked to my checking account. I didn’t end up needing any of the items so I returned them to the store, unopened, a few days later. Home depot accepted the return, gave me the return receipt, great. that was two weeks ago and I still havent gotten a refund, so I chatted instacart support last week. they asked for the return receipt so I gave it to them and they said someone would follow up within 1-2 business days. That was a week ago. Never heard back, so I chatted them again today and they said the exact same thing. gave them the receipt, they said someone would follow up in 1-2 days. I called bullshit because no one answered me last time, so sounds like they’re just trying to get rid of me. I told them I need someone to handle it now cause obviously the “1-2 days” thing is a lie. They said "there’s nothing we can do via chat, we promise we’ll get back to you. if not then contact us again., etc.” I told them they said that last time so here I am contacting them again. Then they just disconnected the chat

Has anyone had success getting something like this resolved or am I just shit out of luck for the $50 I spent? Please dont say “you should never pay with venmo, you shouldnt have done ___.” that ship has sailed. Just looking for advice on where to go from here.

Edited to add also, I considered trying to dispute it with my credit card company but I don’t think that’s an option here since it was a venmo payment linked to my checking account?

Update: I just called IC customer support, and while on the phone they emailed me and asked for the return receipt (again), so I sent it, and they were able to look at it while still on the phone and saw that the refund went back to the shoppers card but needs to come to me, and they confirmed they will get the refund to me. I have to wait to see if the refund actually appears but at least now I have some evidence in writing.

Basically it sounds like they do provide returns but only if you harass them. otherwise they hope you forget about it.

Update: Officially got the refund! It came through venmo, for anyone wondering. If IC says you can return something for a refund (which it did in this case), just make sure you get your return receipt, and call them (don’t online chat) if you have issues. Apparently I should’ve told Home Depot to return it to a different card than the one used for the purchase at the store, which was the IC card, and that could’ve avoided all these issues, but lesson learned.

Has anyone in the history of dog ownership actually found a way to reduce lab shedding?

Mine isn’t even full lab, he’s a lab, pit, other herbs and spices mix from a shelter, but man he sheds like he’s 3 labs in a trench coat. We’ve been using a furminator brush but apparently to no avail. Plus he seems to hate it, so wondering if it’s even worth continuing. Has anyone tried anything that works? A special brush or combination of brushes? Any luck with groomers trying something special? Vitamins? I personally don’t care a ton but sometimes our guests do, and I admit it’s embarrassing when I track dog hair into other peoples homes as well.

Is there anything that makes a difference at all, or is part of the experience of being in the lab family just a free fur coat for you, your car, and your entire home?

How impossible is it to get house cleaning for under $200?

I could really use some help but am also on a fairly strict budget for a while. The house is about 2,500 square feet, 3 bedrooms (although only one is actually being used as a bedroom. The others are an office and sort of lounge area without much furniture and would be pretty easy to clean. The office could probably be skipped entirely), 2.5 bath. It’s not a mess, and it was actually deep cleaned a month or so. I need help with floors, dusting, bathrooms, and kitchen. And it’s a constant battle against dog hair. I dont need help with laundry or decluttering kinds of things though.

I know 2,500 is a largeish home so am I completely out of my mind to think I could find cleaning for $200 or less?

I know there are already a bunch of “who’s the best house cleaner?” posts here and I did check those, but the first few I looked up quotes for were well over $200, so wondering if I should quit my search :/

Edited to add: I’m thinking of once per month or maaaaybe twice depending on the cost.

Friendly reminder that the doordash sub is not real life

I see so many “why do people keep ordering DD? Every post I see on here is about how terrible it is!!” yes because you came to the DD complaint room. It’s like going to the hospital and seeing a bunch of sick people around you and assuming that means everyone in the world is sick. Remember that for every horror story posted on here, there are several orders that were completed with no issues, but nobody comes to this sub to say their experience was just fine, so you forget about those. Obviously yes there are sometimes issues with orders on DD but there are also issues on UberEats and Instacart and all the others.

If you want to order food from DD because you’re tired or sick or busy or lazy or any other reason at all, go for it, you are more likely to get your food just fine than to have issues. If you want to be a dasher, go for it, you will get crazy customers and horror stories sometimes but most of the time it will be straightforward and boring. Please stop reading this sub and thinking the world is on fire because most of the posts here are negative. This is negativity dot com, it is a tiny portion of all thousands if not millions of doordash orders delivered every day. it is not representative of real life

I spent the day saying Drag Race quotes at work as if they were my own. They think I’m hilarious. Please share suggestions for more

We had an outside company come to my job today for a marketing project, and it was my job to escort them around, unlock doors, make sure they got what we wanted and only did what they were supposed to, etc. It was three people total but I spent most of the day just talking to one woman while the other two filmed and such. There was one door we tried to open and couldn’t, and I’d never been inside, so I went to ask for help and they said the code was right next to the door and we didn’t see it. Naturally I said “reading is fundamental.” The woman thought it was hilarious, and an idea formed. I spent the rest of the day dropping drag race quotes whenever I could. It was quite the mental exercise, 10/10 highly recommend. They’ll be back one more time Monday and I’m already here searching for more I might have forgotten and thinking of ways I might be able to work them in. Hopefully she doesnt for some reason google over the weekend or tell anyone about the ones I've already used. I don’t want to ruin the illusion. Here’s what I already used, that I remember:

  • Reading is fundamental
  • Not today satan
  • Party
  • The level of unprofessionalism. Far too much
  • What you wanna do isn't necessarily what you're gonna do (note I was talking to her about someone else, I didnt say this to the woman talking about her LOL)
  • Sorry I’m late. I didn’t wanna come
  • Cant we just bottle our feelings like normal people
  • I'm a good Christian woman, I have nothing to say

I know I'm forgetting some, this was over the course of hours. Please share suggestions for others I might be able to work in. Probably none with the words bitch or pussy cause even though it was clearly pretty casual it is technically my job

This is maybe normal, but just making sure

I have a pretty easily excited, high energy dog who likes to run around, and we have a big back yard. He goes out there several times a day to pee or just sniff around, but as soon as I go out with him he gets excited and starts running laps. Sometimes he runs pretty wide circles around the full yard, and sometimes smaller ones pretty much just around me and maybe 4 feet in diameter. Sometimes after he does this and he eventually stops and goes inside he’ll be pretty wobbly and looks dizzy and seems to be drooling more for less than a minute (edited to add: this doesn’t happen very often. Maybe a couple times a month, if that), and today this happened and after wobbling around for a few seconds he fell over on his side. Then he laid down for a few minutes but got back up on his own and stretched and seems ok now.

He was completely fine before running around though, and this never happens unless he was just running in circles, so I think he just got dizzy from running in circles and did too much? He otherwise seems fine, but I think this is the first time he’s fully fallen over, so wondering if I should be concerned. Does this seem to be just a normal consequence of being a crazy dog and running in tight circles or is this something I should maybe talk to the vet about? I take him to the vet for everything cause I am paranoid so I sometimes wonder if they’re going to start think it’s boy-who-cried-wolf.

In case it’s important, he’s two years old, a pittie and lab (and a few smaller doses of things) rescue mix, about 50 pounds.

Why is this happening on just one side of my freezer?

It’s been building up the last few days on the half of the freezer close to the camera but not the other half, as you can kind of see. Any idea why or if there’s a way to fix it without defrosting? The freezer is pretty packed and I really don’t know where I’d put all the food while it defrosts, if that’s even the correct solution.

Edit: thank you all! I took your advice and went and checked the seal around the gasket and compared it to the other side. The bad side definitely wasn’t sealing as well. I took some of the food out, cleaned away the ice that was built up around the sides, and had to shove it pretty hard to get it to close all the way, but it looks to be sealed better now. Not sure why I still had to shove it so hard to get it to close even after cleaning stuff out and removing the ice, maybe there was some remaining ice I had to crush in the back, idk, but hopefully it continues to close all the way and it doesn’t build back up. Tbd I guess. thanks for your help!

and if it’s important or helpful, make and model is samsung rf28hfedtsr. not sure how old it is, it was here when I moved in two years ago

Phone charger working in outlets but laptop charger not

Currently very angry sitting in a hotel (traveling for work) that’s experiencing some kind of electrical “outage” they’re allegedly working on. Seems like certain devices are working but others aren’t, according to them. Elevator’s not working, but the lights are. The tv won’t turn on but the lamp will. Anyway my laptop charger was plugged into the wall (but not actually to my laptop thankfully) when whatever outage occurred hours ago. Now it isn’t working in any outlet I try it in. My phone charger is working fine in every outlet though. The outage is still apparently in the process of being fixed since there are things still not working throughout the hotel. Did whatever outage occurred fry my computer charger because it was plugged in? In case it matters, it’s a macbook pro charger, one of the big square power adapters, not sure how many W, and it wasn’t plugged directly into the wall when the “outage” occurred, it was plugged into outlet on the nightstand. I had to search high and low to finally find a wall outlet not blocked by some hotel furniture/decor but confirmed it’s not working when plugged directly into the wall either. I dont know when or how the outage started, I was out of the hotel at the time, but it’s been at least 2 hours since I got back and learned about it.

Any chance this charger starts working again when the outage is resolved, or should I go ahead and spend a ridiculous amount of money replacing it? Is it possible it got fried beyond repair?

Favorite mirror-talk prompt?

This is a very niche question but you peoples memory for specific moments in this show amazes me so I believe in us. Rewatching season 6 and just laughed out loud at Courtney putting on makeup and saying “so joslyn do you have any old people you relate to?” ya know, nice normal question to ask a friend out of the blue 😂 wondering if there were any other funny (obviously producer scripted) conversation starters for these little heart-to-hearts

Dashers, please don’t do this to my order

Went to order some takeout shake shack (for myself) on a very busy night and this woman was already at the counter with her food bags trying to get an employee’s attention. She waited a while and finally got someone’s attention and asked if they separated the hot and cold food (what cold food is inside a bag at shake shack idk. Maybe they have salads?), employee didn’t know, so she asked them to open it and separate it. First employee said they couldn’t reopen the bag once it’s sealed, so she asked to speak to someone else. That took a while cause the employees were slammed but finally the second employee came and went back and forth with her for a while and said they usually don’t reopen the bags but fine. So she waited longer for them to separate the bag. Finally got the new bags then took no less than 10 extra minutes wrapping them and placing them in these little bags she brought. From the time I got there, when she was already there with the food already given to her, to the time I got my food and left and she was still packing up, 25 minutes had passed. I understand you want to keep food hot, but in the half hour it took her to get everything the way she wanted, I can’t help but think she could’ve already dropped the order off, but instead the food was just sitting in the bags getting cold, and I’m sure the customer(s) was home getting annoyed by how long it was taking.

I appreciate wanting the food to be the right temp but maybe also weigh the best way to do so? And don’t take all the extra time wrapping it up in cute little packages, likely thinking it’ll get an extra tip 😭 please just put my bag in a hot bag in you car and go

How much are you paying for dog boarding?

Ours has gone up in price recently to about $60/night and I’m wondering if there are better options out there. Not dogtopia; he didn’t have a great experience there. I think he needs an outdoor space. He’s been to two other boarding locations with outdoor play places and has done great and got along with the other dogs and come home happy and tired. He is pretty high energy and loves to play, so we need somewhere where daycare is included in the boarding. He’s about 55 pounds. I know some places charge more for dogs of different sizes. Does anyone have less expensive places they love? It’s possible $60 is about as good as it’s going to get, just looking to see if somewhere else is out there! Everything is getting too expensive and we need to save money wherever we can.
