X-Men vs Street Fighter - alternate expanded first release

A while back, I've made what if rosters for the various Capcom games. (Source: this very sub)

After the 2nd season of X-Men 97 concluded, I thought that I could rework and refine the roster, using the various high-definition artworks Marvel and Disney offered. However, some characters still don't have theirs, so I said "screw it I'm not waiting". Then again, the images for Sabretooth and Marrow... are taken from screenshots from the new series.

Someone actually asked me to "add Apocalypse and Cable", back in my previous select screen. Since I had another roster, I used that opportunity to do so.

As per the original game, Apocalypse is the final [giant] boss, but his original form, as En Sabar Nur, would be a secret fighter, like Akuma. What's interesting is how in Street Fighter x Tekken, Akuma faced Ogre, so En Sabar Nur feels like a similar opponent thematically.

The grid is a new one, slightly changed from the one I've done before, but using Photoshop, I tried to recreate the select screen from the original game, based on this animation. (Source: The Fighter Generation) It's not perfect, but I had fun doing it... again ^_^

So basically, "what if X-Men vs Street Fighter launched with 40 characters, instead of 17"... and here's my take. I used SFA3 portraits for the SF side and used the concept arts from X-Men 97 for the X-Men side.

Enjoy :)

X-Men: Children of the Atom - alternate expanded first release

A while back, I've made what if rosters for the various Capcom games. (Source: this very sub)

After the 2nd season of X-Men 97 concluded, I thought that I could rework and refine the roster, using the various high-definition artworks Marvel and Disney offered. However, some characters still don't have theirs, so I said "screw it I'm not waiting". Seriously, Iceman, Sentinel and Sabertooth still haven't received their concept arts... and we're 2 seasons in, true believers. That's not counting other characters, but that's beside the point.

  • Iceman's is based on a photo from Season 2.
  • Sentinel's is from UMvC3.
  • Sabertooth's is from Ultimate Alliance.

The grid is the same exact image I've done before, but using Photoshop, I tried to recreate the select screen from the original game, based on this animation. (Source: The Fighter's Generation) It's not perfect, but I had fun doing it ^_^ As a reminder, for the grid, black portraits are base fighters, and blue ones are unlockable.

So basically, "what if X-Men: Children of the Atom launched with 24 characters, instead of 10 playable and 2 unplayable ones"... and here's my take.

Enjoy :)

Mario Kart World: CPUs being more aggressive and smarter... Good or bad?

I've gotten around clearing the new Knockout Tours... and I missed that feeling of "narrowly winning" at 150cc and Mirror Mode.

CPUs are good at using shortcuts, taking alternate routes, tricking out bumps and ramps... as well as sniping you with green shells and holding on speed-boosting items until they pass you to get a significant lead.

I haven't felt this rewarded, stressed out and sometimes angered when playing Mario Kart for some time now. In 8 Deluxe, 200cc was... more frustrating due to the breakneck speed and "unresponsive controls" due to driving too fast for curves; I needed to BRAKE in order to negociate some turns. However, in World, you're always on your toes, never safe and one very small mistake can cost you the race.

After more than 1 year after its release, what's the consensus on the CPU's AI behavior?

So... what other historical figures, fictional criminals, folk heroes and deities could work as Personas?

Unless I'm wrong, here's how Personas were selected for the Thieves, going by tiers:

  1. Based a famous criminal, bandit, outlaw, tragic figure or anti-hero, be historical or fictional...
  2. Based on a deity or divine entity associated with trickery or defiance...
  3. Based on the Persona's 1st form, often an alternate identity or inspiration

About #3, here's what I mean...

  • Joker - Raoul; based on Arsène Raoul Lupin, his full name
  • Mona - Diego; based on Don Diego de la Vega, Zorro's real name
  • Skull - William; based on William Kidd, the Captain's full name
  • Panther - Célestine; based on Célestine Galli-Marié, Carmen's actress from the play
  • Fox - Gorokichi; based on Goemon's birth name
  • Queen - Agnes; based on one of Pope Joan's alternate names
  • Oracle - Al Azif; based on the Necronomicon's Arabic name
  • Noir - Lucy; based on Lucy Hay, the Countess who inspired Milady de Winter
  • Crow - Hereward; based on Hereward the Wake, Robin Hood's inspiration
  • Violet - Ella; based on Cinderella's real name

So, off the top of my head, I have...

  • Calamity Jane / Canary
  • Annie Oakley / Phoebe
  • Billy the Kid / McCarthy
  • Jesse James / Woodson
  • Mary Read / Mark
  • Anne Bonney / Cormac
  • Guy Fawkes / Guido
  • Heracles / Hercules
  • Marcus Junius Brutus / Servilius
  • Leonidas / Leandro
  • Spartacus / Sparatokos

What about you :) ?

If Magma Dragoon "represents" Akuma from SF, what new Mavericks could pay hommage to other Capcom characters, be Street Fighter or otherwise?

(I say "new Maverick", because this isn't a topic about "assigning existing bosses")

I kinda liked how in X4, Dragoon was a nod to Akuma, from Street Fighter. I'd like Capcom to expand that idea with new bosses, so what could be done?

For instance, Sumie Hound would work for Okami's Amateraru, because "sumie" is the traditional ink wash painting art style. "Hound" is... the safest word I can find, because "pooch", "mutt", "mongrel" and "b****" aren't gonna fly ^^;

So, what if "those 3" were actual party members in a new P5 expansion, following Royal Tactica and Strikers...

What if Sophia, Zenkichi and Toshiro became actual party members in a new Persona 5 expansion, using the usual turn-based mechanics, how would you "convert" them?

Here are a few things I've been brainstorming...

---

I had in mind that Sophia Ichinose, who took Kuon's surname, is now an AI controlling a physical robotic body, resembling the weapons like Aigis and other creations from the Kirijo Group. Her look would be similar to her original non-Thief outfit, but as a "weapon", her joints would have visible hinges and grids. Her hair would also have wires to hold her heart-shaped pigtails.

Her Personas would be Pandora, Tyche and Anesidora. Pandora remains her first Persona since Strikers. Tyche is the Greek goddes of luck and fortune and counterpart to the Roman godded Fortuna, both a demon in P5... and Pandora's counterpart. Anesidora is Pandora's variant name... apparently. There's this rule that "the 3rd Persona form links back to the 1st one", so that would work. Yeah, feel free to compare...

  • Raoul is for "Arsène Raoul Lupin".
  • William is for Captain William Kidd.
  • Diego is for Diego de la Vega, Zorro's real name.
  • Ella is Cendrillon's name, short for Cinderella.
  • and so on...

---

For Zenkichi Hasegawa, not much change in his life, aside maybe a promotion in his job, but he would now be a better father figure to Akane. His Personas are Valjean, Fauchelevent and Vidocq. Valjean doesn't change after his awakening in Strikers. Fauchelevent is one of Valjean's aliases while on the run. Vidocq refers to Eugène François Vidocq, a real-life French ex-convict, who was the inspiration for the character, again, with the rule.

---

Finally, as for Toshiro Kasukabe, well... I have no idea how politics work in Japan... at all... so if it's legal for him to start his own party, that would be the case. His Personas are Ernesto, Marianne and Che. Ernesto remains the same after his awakening in Tactica. Marianne refers to Eugène Delacroix's work of art "Liberty Leading the People". It's the... bare-breasted woman planting a flag. Che is of course Ernesto Guevara's nickname. That follows the rule, and... if we can have a Persona called "Raoul" that links back to "Arsène Raoul Lupin", "Che" is fair game.

The guy would have a Phantom Thief attire and code name. Upon seeing how the whole rebellion and "liberating the people" themes are used, I think "Vox" would fit nicely. It means "Voice" in Latin, as in "Vox Populi" and "giving a voice to the people". Hazbin Hotel fans, knock yourself out XD

His attire... should be a highly-graded military officer outfit, once again playing with the rebellion theme. We don't have a soldier among the Thieves, and given that Ernesto was in a guerrilla, it would also match the more strategist aspect of the character. Basically, picture Toshiro wearing a imposing modern Japanese military general outfit with the cap, insignia and longcoat.

To round things up, Vox would wield both a spear and rocket launcher. The spear, of course, would be a callback to Erina, including a floating standard. I don't expect Erina to be the playable character this time around, so Toshiro taking the mantle feels like the right way to do. The rocket launcher was given to Erina in an early concept art (Source: SMT Wiki), and that's one firearm not used by anyone right now. However, as a twist, Toshiro would briefly summon the little rebels from Tactica, now wearing the same outfit as Ernesto, to bring, aim and fire the Launcher on his command, as if he was directing cannoneers.

---

So, what are your ideas to integrate those characters ^_^ ?

EDIT: I'm open for suggestion for...

  • Toshiro's code name.
  • Toshiro's 2nd Persona.
  • Zenkichi's 2nd Persona.
  • Sophia's 2nd Persona ^^;

Ok, HOW does the Grenade Launcher work again?

(I don't see a "rules" flair, so...)

Here is the Grenade Launcher. (Source: AoN)

I know what's its purpose, but... oh boy... the rules are so complicated...

  • The ONLY way to fire a grenade from a Launcher is with Area Fire, as 2 actions.
    • You... cannot shoot as a regular 1-action move?
    • Where's the Unweildy trait then???
  • It holds 6 grenades (surprisingly without the Capacity 6 trait)... but has a Reload 2... which means that it takes 2 actions to reload a grenade that is already loaded after another 2 actions?
    • Is the next grenade loads automatically?
    • Can't I legit shoot AND reload in the same round?
  • Why isn't it a "normal" weapon with the "as per grenade" for Damage?
    • Seriously, why is it separate from the other pistols and rifles?

Rant over, thanks in advance, have a nice day :)

I loved that game as a kid; kinda wished it was better though.

Mighty Morphin Power Rangers SNES box art

To make it brief, it was a single-lane beat-em-up where you picked a Ranger, fought putties for the first section of a stage, morphed near the end and continued on until you faced the boss in the 2nd section. The last 2 stages had Megazord fights.

However, that game wasn't perfect ^^; It lacked several features that would have made it better in the long run.

  • Make Tommy the Green Ranger playable, as the game followed the 1st season of the show, so that's before he became the White Ranger.
  • Add 2-player co-op, because there WAS one, but only for the Megazord fights... kinda weak ^^;
  • Have THREE sections per area/stage, 1st section being as a civilian until you morph, 2nd one morphed as a Ranger and fight the monster, and new 3rd part where you fight the monster using the Megazord, y'know, like in the show.
  • Offer the Dragonzord as a playable mech, which would have been on point with both the addition of Tommy and the 2-player co-op mode.
  • Add more levels and bosses, such as King Sphinx, Madame Woe, Grumblebee, Pudgy Pig, Snizzard, Twin Man and Goldar.
    • For locations, we have Angel Grove Park, Museum, Beach's Club, Shopping Mall and the usual quarry XD
    • Twin Man may be a weird choice, but imgaine a boss that be transform into any of the Rangers for a few attack cycles... and now apply this to the Megazord fight.
  • Oddly enough, only Kimberly had a special move where as a Ranger, she could shoot an arrow by pressing Attack while holding Up, so giving an equivalent ranged attack to the others would be a good thing.

So yeah, I just wanted to tell how I liked this game way back then and how it could ahve been a better experience, despite already being a good experience.

Screw Scarlet Witch or Blade for Ghost Rider's team... Give me this guy instead :D

Devil Dinosaur (Marvel Rivals)

First off, dinos are still awesome 😛

Second, Devil Dino recently got back into the spotlight thanks to the animated show Moon Girl and Devil Dinosaur. The show sadly got cancelled, but still...

Third, he just got added in Rivals. While neither games are connected, it's still probable that one affects the other.

Finally, while we do have the Hulk and Peni Parker, fighting games often offer even BIGGER characters.

A Resonance, a Trail or a Lacrimosa

Hello everyone,

I would like to try out JRPGs on the Switch 2 and I've stumbled across a few series/games.

I would like to hear your opinions on which one I should play first. Funny enough, they all have similar combat mechanics, which I am familiar with, thanks to the Tales series (more on that later).

  • Shining Resonance Refrain is a game in the Shining franchise. I never played any of these, but the combat feels intuitive. Apparently, on SW1 it's dirt cheap, but... I don't know if it's because it was bad... or that it simply didn't sell ^^;
  • Trails in the Sky 1st Chapter is "the hot new thing" right now thanks to the 2nd chapter's announcement. I never played the series either, but apparently, this is the best place to start. On a sidenote, not all of the Trails games are available on SW1... let alone dubbed.
  • Ys VIII: Lacrimosa of Dana is also a popular choice. I never played the Ys game, BUT there's no real order to do so. I did hear that Ys 9 is so-so and Ys 10 got some flak due to the re-release on SW2... Maybe I'm wrong.

I mentioned the Tales games earlier. Well, I already played Symphonia, Graces F and Xillia 1, so I'm not interested into double dipping. Vesperia sounds great... but the English cast changed for the extra dialogues due to some union BS. Finally, Berseria doesn't run that well on SW1 and still didn't get a SW2 upgrade.

So... with the 3 games I've listed, which one should I try first 😄 ?

Thanks in advance,

Have a nice day ^_^

Heya all,

one ancestry that... unfortunately hasn't been converted yet and may be missing for some time is the Colossiborn. It was introduced in Mechageddon and it basically allows you to play as a kaijin, or a creature that can grow in size like a "monster-of-the-week" villain from Power Rangers, Super Sentai, Kamen Rider, Ultraman or other Japanese TV shows and movies 😛

While we don't have mech rules yet, here's what I drafted for a 2E conversion.

(All links point to Archives of Nethys)

-----------------

MECHANICS

  • Hit Points 10
  • Size Medium
  • Speed 25 feet (plus extra)
  • Attribute Boosts Strength, Constitution, Free
  • Attribute Flaw Charisma
  • Languages Common / Additional languages equal to 1 + your Intelligence modifier (if it's positive). Choose from the list of common languages and any other languages to which you have access (such as the languages prevalent on your home world).
  • Darkvision
  • Limited Telepathy 30 feet
  • Colossus Weapons gain one unarmed attack, using the Awakened Animal's list

-----------------

HERITAGES

  • Waterborn gains swim speed, plus skills related to underwater terrain.
  • Airborn gains fly speed, plus skills related to aerial terrain.
  • Caveborn gains burrow speed, plus skills related to underground terrain.
  • Cliffborn gains climb speed, plus skills related to mountain terrain.
  • Landborn gains +10 to land speed, plus skills related to flat terrain.
  • Graviborn gains hover speed, plus skills related to low gravity terrain.

-----------------

UNIQUE FEAT IDEAS

  • Extra weapons (Feat 1) gain an additional unarmed attack
  • Living mech form (Feat 8) based on the Kaiju Stance, as a stance, Large, like the enlarge spell
  • Apex mech form (Feat 16) upgrade to Huge, again like the spell
    • (NOTE: That's the Colossiborn's major ability)
  • Hardened Shell (Feat 1) gain reinforced armor
  • Projectile (Feat 1) gain a projectile, based on both the Automaton's Energy Beam in terms of damage die, range and usage, and the Dragonkin's breath in terms of damage type. The damage would start at 1d4, increasing by 1 die at 5th (1d4 to 2d4), 9th, 13th and 17th, roughly following the manufactured weapons' progression.
    • In Living mech form, the damage increases by 1 step (1d4 to 1d6).
    • In Apex mech form, the damage increases by 2 step (1d4 to 1d8).
    • (NOTE: This allows a colossiborn to have a projectile or to use regular weapons)
  • Colossus Blast (Feat 8) as a 3-action move, can use the projectile as a line, cone or 10-ft burst, as per the Area trait.
    • In Living mech form, the damage deals twice the number of dices.
    • In Apex mech form, the damage deals three times the number of dices.
      • This stacks with the damage increase.
  • Adapted Movement (Feat 6) gain an additional movement speed
  • Colossus Roar (Feat 14) as per World-breaking Footfall
