Are the TMR stick replacements for Edge from Battle Beaver worth it?

At ~65 a pop (130 total) that is quite the chunk of change, nearly double a normal Dualsense and 2/3 the price of the Edge itself. I'm a new Edge owner, and don't mind spending the money if it is going to be a significant improvement, but the price is making my eyes water a bit.

What would be a good alternative build for a DoK rogue?

It’s my first ever season, and I started with a DoK rogue, getting all the way to optimal gear, about pit 120. Then I made a whirlwind barb and it is just the superior spin to win, where I don’t want to play my rogue anymore. So I’d like to reroll to another rogue build that is fun and poweful, but that also isn’t too big of a pita to gear (I.e. all new glyphs, etc…). But open to whatever, I’ve realized that farming the loot is the game so basically just a kickass rogue build that will be completely different from my barb and shred Druid I am planning

The Uber Mephisto fight is kind of shit

This is my first season playing and I am fighting him on T12 with a DoK rogue. Now the fight has a lot of fun moments. But I can’t count how many times I have died to some invisible something. I’m no stranger to difficult games, and have platinums for all the Soulsborne games. It’s not the difficulty I mind, that is what I enjoy. It is that it feels pretty cheap and unfair a decent amount of the time. Also the camera is wonky as fuck in some of the later phases.

This is going to be my capstone to the season so I’m going to persevere (consistently getting to phase 3 now), however I do wish the quality of the hardest bosses in the game was a bit more consistent.

My thoughts on the Silent Hill 2 Remake

To start, I have always been mostly a resi guy in terms of what I have played. For whatever reason I just never played any of the Silent Hill games despite owning every Sony console since PS2.

I finally got around to playing the original SH2 on PS2 about a year ago, and immediately shot up into my top 2 with Resident Evil 2. I found it just as immersive and creepy as if it had been a modern game, and could barely stand the dread during the later parts of the game.

So it was with great expectations I played the remake. I took about 17 hours for my first playthrough as I was exhaustive with exploration.

The gameplay is phenomenal. It made it so much fun to explore and fight enemies, where in the original I largely avoided it. This was to the remakes detriment later on however as I had stacked ammo and health by the later areas that only the mandarins really terrified me from the prison on. I would expect a hard mode playthrough to largely negate this.

The environments and ambience was top notch. I loved the changes but then having the glimpses of the past to reference the original moments. The game was so beautiful despite being an industrial hell hole half the time, and I had this strong feeling of emptiness and melancholy for most of the game. Everyone in Silent Hill was just so sad and broken. I found the later areas to drag on a bit, and they could have probably been cut by about 40-50 percent and retained or improved the impact. But despite that I never was bored, and I enjoyed all 17 hours.

So glad I got the chance to play this; I’ll be taking a break and then doing NG+ to get the platinum trophy.

[Discussion] I’m so proud of my platinum list

Started in 2013, and have amassed 48 during that time. A collection of my absolute favorite games and games that have resonated with me in some way. I can look through the list and tie them to specific events in my life, and it is a very fun way to think about the past 13 years.

I love this hobby, and even though I only get a few plats per year, it brings me consistent joy.

[Discussion] Need recommendations for #49

Number 50 is going to be one of my favorite childhood games, Halo. But need a good one for 49. Can be just one you enjoyed, one you think I’m missing based on my current list, or whatever is on your mind.

Advice for prep to jump as Senior/Staff?

My companies stock just feels hopeless and despite consistent greatly exceeds ratings and raises / promotions I’m still making about as much as I was when I started 5 years ago.

For experienced roles is it still LC / SD? I know there is an AI component now, what does that look like? Maybe it’s crazy to try jumping in this market but I’m just fed up with never getting ahead.

Lies of P - Extremely Just Ok

I am writing this after finishing Lies of P last night, a game that I expected to be an absolute home run for me. For a bit of context, I am a long-time Souls fan, with BB, Elden Ring, and Dark Souls 1 all in my top 15 games of time. The similar aesthetic to BB initially attracted me to this game - that Victorian England gothic horror feel is chefs kiss. After an initial hot start that found me loving every moment, I found myself progressively enjoying the experience less and less from about the mid-late game (around Barren Swamp) on. By the final level I was literally running past enemies to try and progress and finish the damn thing because I was so sick of it.

Here are some of the issues I had with the game:

  1. The parry mechanic never quite felt right to me. As a fan of Sekiro and the Fallen Order games, the parry was just different enough that while I was able to successfully do it with regularity, it led to a much slower, more "wait for an opening" combat loop that wore on me over time.
  2. The city of Krat felt underutilized. It has serious Yharnam potential, and I adored the Elysium Street and Grand Exhibition levels. In fact, I quite enjoyed every area up until Chapter 8, which is the bespoke "poison swamp" that every Soulslike insists on including. Even in those early areas though, it was very much on rails, and left me with a feeling that I only experienced a small part of it, which bothered me. The last 4 chapters were unappealing (particularly the final chapter - woof), and I would have preferred that they utilized more of the city or gave me some additional exploration in some of the earlier areas.
  3. The bosses were fairly hit or miss. I breezed through most of them on a couple tries, and frankly I don't remember a lot of them that well. Then by the end I was so burned out with the game that I didn't fully enjoy Laxasia, which many say is their favorite boss. My favorite boss ended up being the Puppet King. Also a huge pet peeve is the "two action bars" style of boss. Maybe I have just played so many of these games, that it just annoys me. Particularly when you have a long first phase, and then a sharp difficulty spike in the second phase so you find yourself spending most of your time just getting back to the second phase to get a little practice in. Laxasia definitely felt this way.
  4. The enemies were uneven for me. The puppet and mechanical enemies were for the most part excellent. And fresh! I hadn't really played a game with this specific flavor of enemy. But then there are these carcass enemies that feel like Last of Us (or any zombie game in the past 15 years) rejects. Then at the end all the cool puppet enemies get corrupted by the decay and turn into carcasses. There also wasn't a huge variety (the last level is just every elite you have ever fought 10x) which got pretty boring over time. I would have much preferred they leaned in fully to the cyberpunk / puppet aesthetic since this to me was a completely fresh experience. It is also unfortunate that Puppet King is (I believe) the last meaningful puppet boss encounter. The vast majority after that point are carcass or decay based enemies.

All in all I did enjoy much of my experience with Lies of P. I'm happy I played it, but I have no desire to ever fire it up again (I immediately deleted it from my console). I think fleshing out the city more and improving the back third of the game (it really committed Dark Souls 1's sin here) would have improved my overall impression with the game. As it was, it left me feeling rather hollow.

Want to learn about cheese, where to start?

I’d like to understand the basic etymology, and do a structured tasting schedule to understand the differences between types. What is recommended for relative beginners?
