Rant

So, I’m mainly posting this on the back of all the recent drama regarding Tyler, Sav, Kallum, JJ and Miss Faye; but basically, I’m so so so tired of all the misinformation on this app about mental health. I’m a registered mental health professional in the NHS, I’ve worked on psych wards with very unwell people, and I now work in a community mental health team. People are just as unwell in the community than they are the ward half the time.

Anyway, I’m getting sick of hearing “they should be sectioned”, “people get sectioned if they do x, y, z”, “they’re in a manic episode” because every single time that people on this app say these things, they are always wrong and it’s honestly harmful. It spreads false information that causes frustration and anger towards healthcare workers when the things that are said on tik tok don’t happen in reality. Because they don’t. And we get the backlash from it all the time.

So let’s clarify: being low in mood for a few hours isn’t clinical depression.
Thinking you have ADHD or autism doesn’t mean you have it. You MIGHT have it but you won’t know until you are diagnosed by specialists.
You can’t treat grief with medication.
Manic episodes associated with bipolar last for WEEKS at a time, not a few hours.
Police can’t section people.
Ideally, two section 12 approved psychiatrists and a social worker can make recommendations for people to be sectioned. Sometimes this can be a psychiatrist and two social workers.
Nurses can’t section people unless they are also an approved mental health practitioner - this is very rare.
Only doctors can prescribe mental health medication.
You don’t have BPD or EUPD or a narcissistic personality disorder unless you have been diagnosed by a psychiatrist. Again, you MIGHT have it but you don’t have the label unless it’s diagnosed.
You don’t get sectioned for doing drugs unless you are presenting with significant psychotic symptoms that last for at least a week and persist without using substances.
People are sectioned if you are lacking mental capacity to make decisions, are unable to retain information, are a significant risk to yourself and/or others, and urgent treatment is required.
You can’t agree to be sectioned - it takes your right to refuse treatment away when you are that unwell that you can’t look after yourself or others, and it is a decision made in your/others best interests.
Saying “I have mental capacity” doesn’t mean you have mental capacity.
Being emotionally dysregulated is not “psychotic”.
Psychosis is characterised by disordered thoughts, hallucinations and/or delusional beliefs despite there being evidence of facts.
Split personality disorder is not a diagnosis. It is called dissociative personality disorder. Please also stop calling this diagnosis schizophrenia.
Schizophrenia is a psychotic disorder characterised by chronic psychotic symptoms, as outlined above.
S*icide attempts or self-harm do not automatically mean you’ll be sectioned.
Being sectioned is a complex legal, ethical and moral decision to make that takes many, many individual factors into account. It does not happen easily.

ALL of the diagnoses above require a psychiatrist to diagnose. Your GP can’t do this, paramedics can’t do this, police certainly can’t do this, nurses can’t do this. So, stop playing armchair psychiatrist based off your one Google or AI search. Again, it is harmful, inappropriate, and spreads false information and reinforces social stigma against people who actually do have these diagnoses.

Stop using mental health as your get out of jail free card. You are responsible for your behaviours, words, actions unless you have been assessed as lacking mental capacity. Yes, you are responsible for your actions, who’d have guessed.
Having a diagnosis doesn’t mean you don’t have mental capacity to control your actions, speech or behaviours.

And PLEASE for the love of god, stop wasting our resources for a few tik tok views. It’s a joke. The NHS is on its knees right now. If you need advice, call 111, not an ambulance. Redirecting paramedics from actual emergencies is absolutely not acceptable and frankly, dangerous. Someone might actually need that ambulance to save their life.

And breathe 😮‍💨

Wetherspoons

I’m assuming E doesn’t know that the Wetherspoons owner has previously donated to the Conservative and Reform parties, and backed Brexit. Regardless, I’m just going to leave this here so E can see for themselves or people in the lives can inform them! ☺️

Family advice

Hi, first time poster, long time commenter on this sub. I (31M) would like some outside perspective on this. It’s my birthday today and I didn’t receive a birthday message from my father until I clearly met his criteria to deserve one, imo.

There’s a lot of history that is kind of relevant. My parents divorced when I was young but lived in the same town until 2016.
In 2012, I came out to my dad and he did not take it well at all. Some of the things he said included: “what about me? I won’t have any grandchildren now” (despite him having two step-children from his now wife). “You’ll get beaten up, you better not start acting camp.” All in all, I felt uncomfortable living there. I endured it for two days before feeling like, fuck this, I’m leaving. I text my mum to say that I wanted to move in with her, she already knew the situation etc. She understood and agreed. I left school early, grabbed a small bag, and then moved in.
Following this was a two year period of daily abusive voicemails, him or his family waiting for me outside train stations, physical assaults from them, them waiting for me outside of my mum’s house, banging on windows of my mum’s house when he knew she had left but that I was in, being blamed that his mum fell ill because of the stress “I was causing.” Remember, I’m 16-18 during this and was almost kicked out of school for non attendance due to being too scared that I would see them, I was suicidal, self-harming, meeting strange older men and doing drugs to create distance from my situation. Rock bottom gave me the wake up call I needed, I got my grades up, applied for uni, moved to London and cut contact with my dad and his family completely. I had already tried this and changed my number but some weirdo decided to give it to him.

No contact for a few years. I finished uni.
We got back in contact and I have seen him on and off since, but him nor his family ever acknowledged what they did or apologised. Sometimes I have resented him, sometimes it’s been easier to ignore.

Over the past year or so, I’ve been a bit resentful that we only see each other when I travel back to that small town to see him. He has travelled to see me twice in 10 years, one of those times was for my second uni graduation.
I have said a few times over the past year, that he knows where I am, he can travel to see me for a change, I’m not constantly travelling to see him if he wants to see me.
There’s usually always been an excuse: “you’re always busy, I don’t know when you’re working.” I now work 9-5 instead of shifts so he knows I always have weekends off but hasn’t actually asked to arrange something. I’m a nurse and my job is physically and emotionally exhausting; sometimes I just don’t have energy to spend my weekend travelling to a small town to see him. He is also self-employed and can be flexible with his working hours.

So, today. It’s my birthday. I get a message from my step-mum/his wife saying happy birthday, it would be nice to see me, my step sister and her children would like to see me etc etc. I didn’t get a message from him until 2pm AFTER I had text with my step-mum saying that I had said to dad a few times that I can’t travel to him all the time to see him. She messaged about weekends they are free, that they are going holiday soon. I reply saying that’s fine.

Only then do I get a message saying happy birthday, have a nice day. I’ve not had a card, a gift from him for years either.

I’m now wondering whether this is the final straw and tempted to just cut all contact. Am I overreacting to make that decision?

———————-
Edit: thank you to all that responded. It has been helpful and has helped me to reflect on things a little. I haven’t communicated my thoughts to him at the time of writing this. I feel that I will let my emotions settle before making a decision.

AIO conditional love from father

The drinking

Sorry but having full on gulps of vodka from the bottle at age 22 is crazy. That is not normal behaviour. And if they honestly think they are going to be prescribed ADHD meds when they have substance use issues, they’re going to have a rude awakening

Infinite wealth

I finished IW yesterday and although I found the gameplay much improved from LAD, I did find it a lot easier - especially the end. I wasn’t significantly over-levelled, level 56 when fighting Ebina but I just found the fight underwhelming and didn’t break a sweat compared to the final boss of LaD. Did anyone else feel like this?

Even Amon was not that hard compared to other titles

Burglary

Hi everyone, just a reminder to double check and lock windows and doors even when at home. Last night i was burgled while i was at home - central Brighton area. When i realised something was off and went to look, the guy ran out and didn’t take everything he had planned to (had packed one of my bags full of electronics, dropped a games console in the hallway when running out, luckily still works). Sadly, stole my wallet with my bank card, ID, work bus pass in it.

Police have taken fingerprints and are searching their database for any matches.

If the burglar happens to read this: f*ck you.
