How long for a new gecko to feel comfortable

How long for a new gecko to feel comfortable

I got this 11 month old 10 days ago. While he is eating very well and consistently (about 10 BSFL and multiple bites out of Pangea Fig amd Insect and Repashy Grub Pie) I never ever see him. I have a heavily planted and cluttered 36x18x36 and he completely disappears during the day. I have a cam on the tank and he usually doesn't appear until several hours after dark and will disappear a few hours before lights on as sun starts to creep in through the windows. On average, how long for these guys to feel secure enough to be more visible? I know the camouflage really well, but this isn't me missing seeing him this is him just so completely hidden.

Proof of life

Second night and captured some serious exploration and seems like he's got a favorite perch. Also, ate quite a bit of Pangea Fig & Insect!

The new arrival

Finally a proud owner of a Chahoua! This lil dude arrived this morning and I'm already obsessed.

Food for my bio filter

I have a tree philodendron, pothos and monstera growing out of this 40 gallon that has a common musk turtle and 2 fancy goldfish. I do a 10% water change monthly with ro di water remineralized with salty shrimp and dose twice a week with Gold trace. I recently started dosing with Sea Chem potassium twice a week. My nitrates are less than one using a Hanna digital monitor. I think my plants need more nutrition. Interested to see what potassium does, but wanted to see if i should consider supplementing with anything else? Oh i also supplement carbonate and keep it around 8-9 dkh.

New owner (kind of)

After months of deliberation, I finally bought a Chahoua gecko for my recent bioactive build. I don't have him yet, but pending weather will be getting him at the beginning of August! I wanted to get some information regarding feeding. He will be 10-11 months old. I was planning to rotate food options. For formulated foods I was going to get Pangea growth formula and the insects and fig. I was also going to get the Repashy insect and fruit and the grub pie. For feeders I plan to try silk worms, bsfl and crickets. Supplements with calcium w/o d3 and with d3 every other week (my set up does include uvb). Was planning to feed daily with him still less than a year with twice a week insects. Thoughts about the options and feeding schedule? Any other things to consider?

What should I home in here?

36x18x36 tropical bioactive. Can't decide on what I want to house in here. I posted the second pic so you can see the skeleton of the hardscape. The three horizontal cork rounds are open on either ends. Top contenders are a Cuban false chameleon or a single or female pair of emerald tree skinks. Was also considering a Chahoua gecko. I'm open to other suggestions too. I'm an experienced keeper, although currently do not have any lizards.

Cuban false chameleons

I think I'm most likely going to get a bearded anole for a 36x18x36 bioactive I recently set up. While I wasn't planning on this at the start, the enclosure space and humidity/temps are pretty aligned with one and the more I've read about them seems like a great lizard. I've read that they can become quite personable and even come up to the open door wanting to come out to chill. Other things I read made it seem like they literally have zero personality and are clueless about the presence of the keeper. So from people who keep these guys what are your experiences? While I love that they are very deliberate and slow as to respect my plants, I do still want a little personality and interaction. Also, any recommended places to purchase from? I was looking at obtaining one from Tikis Geckos mainly because you can choose the sex and I am hoping for a male to avoid eggs.

Chahoua gecko vs Cuban false chameleon

I've set up this 36x18x36 bioactive terrarium and have gone back and forth many times on what to house in here. I settled with a chahoua gecko, but my canopy is getting mid to high 80s with just LED and UVB lighting. While I am gonna add some CPU fans to the canopy to see if I can lower down to low 80s I stumbled upon CFC which seems a good fit for this bioactive given then current basking and ambient cool temps and humidity levels. If I can't get the temps down I think I have my answer with a CFC - letting the set up choose the inhabitant, but if I can better cool the canopy then I need to choose between the two. Can people with either of these guys share info specifically about handling and how often they see the pet in the enclosure (just lounging not active) and feeding specifically with the CFC. I have an endless supply of clean ramshorn snails, but fine supplementing with other insects, but looking to see the easiest feeding a pet sitter could do (like some BSFL in a cup or canned snails?). Thanks for all the info.

Space for future emeralds

Just finished setting up this 36x18x36 bioactive planned for a female pair of skinks. While I give it time to grow in, what are good places to look for captive bred skinks ideally sexed. Seems pretty limited out there and I worry about getting potentially two males, or a breeding pair and hear everywhere that keeping them in a group is better than a single one.

Emerald green tree skink

I've been setting up a 36x18x36 bioactive for a pink tongue, but I think I'm going to house an emerald green instead because I love the heavy planting and want something more delicate, along with the space being more spacious for one. Is it ok to house these guys alone? Or should i definitely have at least two? Also if I had two females do I need two separate distinct basking areas?

Thoughts on hardscape for future pink tongue skink

What do you think of the hardscape for my 36x18x36 bioactive enclosure for a Pink tongue skink? Planning for the top right to be the basking zone allowing for a slightly cooler basking zone on the mid log directly below it.

Preparing for a PTS next summer; meal prepping:

I have been spending the last couple months designing and now building a bioactive tropical terrarium. After going back and forth about what to house I have decided on a PTS and plan to get the terrarium up in running in the next couple months and letting it mature and plants grow in til litters pop up next spring/summer. I already have a pretty robust colony of ramshorn snails going in my 33 g shrimp/community tank which I am now actively supporting rather than trying to eradicate given that PTS like snails. While I also plan to supplement with canned snails, repashy insect foods and silk worms (if interested) are there any other snails I should think about trying to start colonies of? I also know that grain free dog/cat food and scrambled eggs are options, but those seem less than ideal if I can get it to eat some better options.

General pink tongue questions:

I have been setting up a 36x18x36 bioactive terrarium and have been considering what I want to house in here. I am an experienced reptile/amphibian keeper, but at the moment just have a musk turtle and a few fish aquariums. My aim is to have a reptile that with age will be able to come out and chill. I think I am settling on a pink tongue skink as they seem to fit the enclosure size and tropical environment, along with having that docile chill like adult personality I am looking for. Am I pretty correct to think they will fit that description? Additionally, my plan was to have cork tiles walls with lots of cork rounds and branches secured in various heights of the enclosure, along with hardy plants. I have a mistking for misting and was planning on using an arcadia forest UVB, along with 2 jungle LED bulbs and a DHP or halogen for basking (thoughts). I live in norther US, but the herp room generally stays in the high 60's at night in the winter, so was thinking I could go with a halogen bulb and not have to heat at night. I also wanted to get an idea of what I should feed. I have seen things from traditional insect feeders with canned snails, all the way to repashy gecko foods and canned cat foods.

Captive breds and communal keeping

I'm in the process of setting up a 36x18x36 bioactive tropical terrarium. I think I'd like to house a group of three emerald tree skinks in here. However, I'm realizing the availability is sparse and I'm ok with getting on a waiting list as I want this set up to mature before adding inhabitants. However, since they can't be sexed til close to a year of age how do people go about getting a group that is not going to end up having multiple males to wreck the place? Also any suggestions for where I should look to get some?

Exo terra vs zoo med

I am planning on a bioactive tropical paludarium of 36x18x36 and looking at zoo med vs exo terra. Wanted to get opinions of which are better. What I like about the exo terra is the water drain and the front ventilation strip. However, I worry a little about leaks around the bulk head over time. I am planning on an exhaust fan at the top so not sure I need that ventilation strip. Thoughts of which is a better option?

Adult enclosure size for an island locale:

As life does, I hit a snag in my initial enclosure plans which was for a 36x18x48. On closer examination that was not going to work with the bioactive plans I have. My foot print is limited to 36x18 so I am going to go with the exo terra paludarium 36x18x36 enclosure. I am planning on having 7-8 inches of substrate, so we are down to 28 inches of vertical height. So, I already decided this would be too small for an adult mainland and am looking at one of the smaller island locales. However, I am still worried this isn't going to be optimal size for an adult. If it isn't I will probably end up going crested or chahoua, but really love the look personality of the leachies. So wanted to get opinions from people who actually live with them, do you think this 36x18x36 with 7 inches of substrate is going to let an adult thrive? It will obviously be filled with plants and plenty of branches and cork rounds.

Pumped

I just ordered my 36x18x48 enclosure for a bioactive set up I have been designing the past month. Super excited to start this build for a future leachie and just needed to post about it. This is the AI generated photo of what I am kind of planning:
