Hermann Huppen (1938–2026): What are your favorite works by the Franco-Belgian master? (Sharing my interview with him)

With the recent passing of Hermann Huppen on March 22, 2026, the comic book world lost one of its most distinct and uncompromising voices. For decades, Hermann was a titan of the Franco-Belgian bande dessinée scene, creating worlds that felt incredibly tactile, lived-in, and often brutally harsh.

I’ve been revisiting his bibliographical catalog lately, and I wanted to open up a deeper discussion about his specific style, his thematic choices, and how his work resonates today.

1. The Anti-Hero and Moral Ambiguity

Unlike many of his contemporaries during the silver and golden ages of BD, Hermann rarely walked the path of clean-cut heroism. Whether you look at the post-apocalyptic wasteland of Jeremiah or the muddy, disease-ridden medieval landscapes of The Towers of Bois-Maury (Les Tours de Bois-Maury), his worlds are defined by survival. His characters are flawed, cynical, and driven by necessity rather than grand ideals. Even Comanche, which started under Greg’s more traditional western writing, quickly absorbed Hermann’s dirty, dust-choked atmosphere.

  • How do you feel his approach to cynical storytelling influenced modern gritty graphic novels? Do you think Red Dust or Jeremiah stand the test of time compared to modern anti-heroes?

2. The Evolution of Art: From Line Work to Direct Color

One of the most fascinating aspects of Hermann’s career was his technical evolution. He went from sharp, heavy ink work in the 70s and 80s to adopting a "direct color" (couleur directe) technique later in his career, painting directly onto his pencils with watercolors. This shift divided some fans—some missed the crispness of his early inks, while others praised the atmospheric, organic weight that his painted pages brought to historical and dystopian settings.

  • Which era of Hermann’s art speaks to you the most? Do you prefer the high-contrast lines of his classic period, or the moodier, painted textures of his later graphic novels?

3. Why hasn't he broken through more in the English-speaking market?

Despite winning the prestigious Grand Prix at Angoulême in 2016, Hermann remains somewhat of a niche, cult figure among mainstream US/UK comic readers, often overshadowed by names like Moebius or Bilal. Is it due to the lack of consistent English translations over the decades, or is his specific brand of cynical, European realism just fundamentally different from what mainstream Anglo-American comic audiences typically look for?

My Interview with Hermann:

A while ago, I actually had the incredible privilege of interviewing Hermann for my Polish pop culture site. We dove into his creative process, his views on violence in fiction, and his long, uncompromising journey through the industry. Looking back at his answers now, especially after his passing, gives them a completely new weight.

Since I run a Polish media outlet, the interview is in Polish, but if you are interested in his firsthand insights, it translates very well via browser translation. I’m leaving the link here as a reference and an extension of this post - interview.

I would love to hear your thoughts. What was your first encounter with Hermann's work? Which specific album or panel will always stick with you? Let's discuss the legacy of a true master.

HORI just announced official Mario Kart Racing Wheels for Switch 2 (and Switch/PC) releasing this June!

I just published a breakdown of HORI's latest announcement on my site and thought the community here would find it interesting.

HORI is releasing two officially licensed Mario Kart racing wheels coming out in June 2026 (specifically for the Japanese market for now).

The interesting part? They are designed with the upcoming Nintendo Switch 2 in mind, but will also feature full backward compatibility with the current Switch and PC.

https://preview.redd.it/ju3sefzwrg2h1.jpg?width=640&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=b38e331a3d5c36bbcdc7564428cd88d110746f3d

Some quick highlights from the specs:

  • Two versions: Standard (9,980 yen) and a Deluxe DX version (15,980 yen).
  • The DX Model: 28 cm diameter, dead zone adjustment, steering linearity toggles, and adjustable steering angles (180° to 270°).
  • Both include foot pedals and dedicated Mario Kart mapped buttons (like a ZL lock mode).

As of now, there is no official word on a Western release, so we might have to resort to importing.

Would you actually play Mario Kart with a full wheel and pedals setup, or do you feel it's overkill for an arcade racer?

If you want to check out the full details, you can find my article here (it's in Polish, but has all the spec tables):POPKulturowy Kociołek

"Eurobeat intensifies" on my desk. Camshop is releasing an officially licensed Initial D Toyota AE86 wireless mouse! 🚗💨

Camshop in Japan is rolling out an upgraded, officially licensed wireless mouse shaped exactly like Takumi’s iconic Toyota AE86 Trueno.

The attention to detail on this thing is pretty insane:

  • It has the classic "Fujiwara Tofu Shop" branding on the side.
  • The front and rear lights actually light up when you turn it on.
  • Best part – you can manually operate the signature pop-up headlights using a tiny lever at the base!
  • It even comes with an exclusive mouse mat featuring original artwork from the series.

https://preview.redd.it/bpxk8oydgg2h1.jpg?width=767&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=bc136284ae8c13695c2e5483789fa79ce9c221df

Honestly, I don't know if drifting through Excel spreadsheets or gaming with an AE86-shaped mouse is peak ergonomics, but as a collectible for an Initial D fan, it looks amazing.

Would you guys actually use this for your daily setup, or just keep it on a shelf as a display piece?

Seiko just announced limited-edition Re:Zero collaboration watches for Emilia and Rem, and the attention to detail is insane! 💙💜

Hey everyone! I wanted to share a really cool breakdown of the upcoming Seiko x Re:Zero official collab timepieces dedicated to Emilia and Rem. Honestly, they look incredibly elegant without being too "in-your-face" anime merchandise.

The design details put into these are pretty amazing:

  • Emilia Model: Features a beautiful snowflake motif on the sub-dial at 6 o'clock. Her chest gem is placed perfectly at the 12 o'clock mark, and her iconic hair ornaments sit at 2 and 10 o'clock.
  • Rem Model: It has a gorgeous gradient aqua-blue dial. The 12 o'clock marker is actually shaped like her demon horn, and you can spot subtle ruffles from her maid outfit and her hair bow built into the design.

https://preview.redd.it/00bxv824gg2h1.jpg?width=768&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=fc76eada7c51107faf9e146187e678c5fa3169bf

Both come in special collector's boxes with gold-foiled logos and character illustrations inside. They are super limited – only 2,000 units each.

Personally, I think the subtlety makes them actually wearable for daily use, not just for display. If you had to pick one, are you going Team Emilia or Team Rem for your wrist?

I wrote a short piece about a forgotten collab: The Reebok x Dragon Quest sneakers from 2022! 👟⚔️

Hey everyone,

I wanted to share a cool piece of trivia I recently covered on my site.

Back on September 3, 2022, Reebok released a special shoe collection in Japan to celebrate the 35th anniversary of the Dragon Quest series. They created unique designs based on the franchise's most iconic monsters:

  • Slime
  • Metal Slime
  • Liquid Metal Slime

https://preview.redd.it/2ny2c6wnaa2h1.png?width=3000&format=png&auto=webp&s=60c10eeb11334fb1aaa60bdbe6fcc5953e382a80

The attention to detail was amazing – the shoes featured monster graphics on the insoles, and even the shoeboxes were specially designed for this release.

Since it was a Japanese exclusive, it’s a pretty rare collector's item. Have any of you ever seen these in the wild, or is this the first time you're hearing about them?

If you want to check out the details and see how they looked, you can read my full post below.

John Carpenter’s return to horror – I wrote an analysis of his latest work and future projects. Do you think we’ll ever get "The Thing 2"?

Hey everyone,

As a massive fan of the Master of Horror, I’ve been closely following John Carpenter’s recent moves. His return with the anthology series Suburban Screams back in October 2023 was a huge talking point, and it got me thinking about his current place in the modern horror landscape.

I decided to sit down and write a breakdown/analysis of his return to the genre, his focus on composing music, and those tantalizing hints he dropped about a potential sequel to The Thing (discussing MacReady and Childs' survival).

While Suburban Screams split the audience down the middle with its true-crime/documentary approach, seeing Carpenter direct again (even remotely from his couch for "Phone Stalker") was something special. However, it leaves us with the ultimate question: does he still have one final, big-screen cinematic masterpiece left in him?

Personally, I would love to see a proper follow-up to The Thing if Kurt Russell is on board, but part of me feels like the ambiguous ending of the 1982 classic is just too perfect to touch.

What do you guys think? Is Suburban Screams a sign that he’s still eager to tell scary stories, or should he just focus on his incredible Lost Themes albums?

"The Marvel Art of Mike Zeck" Art Book is coming! I wrote a breakdown of this massive Kickstarter project – what are your favorite Zeck runs?

I’m a huge fan of 80s Marvel, so when I saw that IDW and Clover Press launched a Kickstarter for "The Marvel Art of Mike Zeck", I just had to dive deep into it and write a comprehensive summary of what we're getting.

For anyone who needs a quick refresher, Mike Zeck is absolute royalty. He co-created Spidey's iconic black suit, drew the original Secret Wars (1984), gave us definitive Captain America runs, and penciled Kraven's Last Hunt.

https://preview.redd.it/yoce6ruaf92h1.jpg?width=680&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=6f8fe36a00633a6fd1a8315add62b8a9f5ff6db5

The campaign originally launched around April 2024 and was funded incredibly fast, but the details of what this 224-page retrospective includes are amazing:

  • Never-before-seen production art, raw pencils, and original layouts.
  • High-res scans of original pages showing the actual ink and paste-ups.
  • Exclusive Kickstarter tiers, including portfolios and signed bookplates.

Personally, Zeck's Punisher and Spidey covers are etched into my brain, and seeing his work get the high-end coffee table book treatment is a massive win for comic history preservation.

I’d love to know – what's your absolute favorite Mike Zeck cover or run?

Did you know about these premium Demon Slayer watches? I gathered all the details about the new Japanese release!

Hey guys! I’m a huge Kimetsu no Yaiba fan and I also write about pop culture. I recently dug into the topic of the new, officially licensed luxury watches by Premium Bandai that are coming out in Japan, and I wanted to share some cool details with you.

They are releasing models for Tanjiro, Nezuko, Zenitsu, Inosuke, and Giyu. What’s awesome is how subtle the designs are:

  • Tanjiro’s features his iconic green and black checkered pattern subtly embedded in the dial.
  • Giyu’s model splits the watch face exactly like his haori.
  • Zenitsu’s has triangle patterns that reflect light differently depending on the angle.

Release details & Pricing: They cost around 30,000–35,000 yen (approx. $200–$230 USD). The release dates in Japan are staggered throughout late 2026, depending on the specific model and pre-order batch.

https://preview.redd.it/mmqnksgrf42h1.jpg?width=768&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=a401fc0a1c20574141c9ded5cdf0d93d2624a7c4

Since they are premium, limited pieces, they probably won't get a standard worldwide release, so getting them outside Japan will require a proxy/forwarding service.

I’ve put together a full breakdown with all the close-up photos and exact specifications on my site. It's written in Polish, but if you want to check out how beautiful these pieces look, feel free to visit:popkulturowykociolek.pl

Which one is your favorite? Honestly, the Zenitsu one surprised me with how elegant it looks!

Nadchodzi filmowe anime na podstawie mangi „GIGANT” (od twórcy Gantza). To pierwszy taki projekt K2 Pictures

https://preview.redd.it/6815kbubjr1h1.jpg?width=1200&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=b231650b2a54050bba6e14a2e829c832086c1c9b

Naha Airport in Okinawa just opened an incredible new Pokémon-themed zone ✈️⚡

Hey everyone!

For anyone planning a trip to Japan or just following how the Pokémon Company handles real-world tourism, the Pokémon Air Adventures initiative just dropped a major update.

On May 2, 2026, Naha Airport in Okinawa officially opened a massive, permanent Pokémon takeover zone inside the terminal. It’s not just a temporary pop-up; it’s a full-on installation.

Here is what they’ve added:

  • The Setup: Huge photo-op murals, a giant Pikachu wall, life-sized figures, and special stamp rallies for travelers.
  • The Merch: A dedicated space with exclusive airport-only merchandise you can't get at regular Pokémon Centers.
  • Game Integration: It ties directly into Pokémon GO with special PokéStops and local regional spawn boosts around the airport area.

It’s pretty amazing how Japan integrates the franchise into actual infrastructure. Getting off a flight and being greeted by a giant Pikachu wall is peak cozy vibes.

If you could pick any Pokémon to be the official mascot of your local airport, who would it be? (Personally, a giant Snorlax blocking the baggage claim area would be perfect).

(I’ll leave a comment below with a link to the full breakdown and a gallery of the location if anyone wants to see how the setup looks!).

Did you guys know Converse Japan made official miniature cars? 👟🚗

https://preview.redd.it/vwu47r5haq1h1.jpg?width=640&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=4f95a0c1eb164490f706ea18b0cd1ffaf6453c6e

Just wanted to share this wild crossover for any hardcore collectors here.

Converse Japan did an official collaboration with Tomica (the famous Japanese die-cast brand) and released these miniature cars modeled after the classic Chuck Taylor All Star high-tops.

The coolest detail is definitely the packaging – the cars actually come inside tiny, vintage-style Converse shoeboxes.

  • Release Date: October 2024 (Październik 2024).
  • Format: Physical collector's item / merchandise only (no digital or video game tie-ins).
  • Availability: Japan exclusive.

I ended up writing a quick breakdown of this collab and tracked down the photos of how the final models and boxes turned out. If you want to see the gallery, I have it up on my site here:https://popkulturowykociolek.pl/samochodziki-converse-japonia-kolaboracja/(the text is in Polish, but the pictures of those tiny shoeboxes speak for themselves).

Would you display something like this on your sneaker shelves, or do you only care about stuff you can actually wear?

I’m a die-cast fan and blogger, and I just covered a really cool crossover that’s happening in Japan. Since the original news dropped in Japanese, I put together an English summary of the most important details for the community here:

Takara Tomy is teaming up with Converse Japan to release special Tomica cars inspired by the iconic Chuck Taylor All Star sneakers.

  • Models: Two different designs based on the classic high-top look, featuring the star logo. Even the packaging is styled like a vintage Converse shoebox.
  • Release Date: October 2024 (Październik 2024).
  • Platforms / Availability: This is a purely physical, die-cast toy release (no digital tie-ins or game platforms announced). It's exclusive to the Japanese market, so we'll have to rely on export shops.

I’ve uploaded the full breakdown and a gallery of how the models and boxes look on my blog. If you want to check out the photos, you can find them here:https://popkulturowykociolek.pl/samochodziki-converse-japonia-kolaboracja/(it's in Polish, but the pictures speak for themselves, or you can use browser translation!).

What do you think of this crossover? Will you be trying to grab one for your collection?

Talking with Fabien Vehlmann changed how I look at tone and storytelling in comics

https://preview.redd.it/r4c2mkznsg1h1.jpg?width=840&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=fa8456cc1914fcf507599b826eea4d1616f58587

I recently had the chance to do an interview with Fabien Vehlmann, and I wanted to share some thoughts that stuck with me while working on it—because I think they translate into a much bigger conversation about comics in general.

What I find fascinating about Vehlmann’s work (and a lot of European comics more broadly) is how differently “genre” gets treated compared to mainstream superhero storytelling. There’s often less emphasis on constant escalation or big set-piece moments, and more focus on mood, discomfort, ambiguity, and character decisions that don’t have clean moral outcomes.

In the interview, that tension between “story as entertainment” and “story as something that lingers emotionally” kept coming up—even when we weren’t explicitly talking about it. It made me think about how comics readers from different traditions might be expecting completely different things from the medium without even realizing it.

And I’m curious how that lands with people here.

Do you feel like European comics (or Franco-Belgian stuff in general) actually take more creative risks, or is it just a different set of conventions that feels riskier if you’re used to superhero pacing?

Also: when you think about “dark” comics, what actually hits harder for you—overt violence and chaos, or slower, more psychological unease where nothing is fully explained or resolved?

Would love to hear how others see it, especially from people who read across both US and European comics.

Full interview.
