Travel Router says no internet but there is, signing in doesn’t do anything

Had a situation recently where I was at a commercial building and wanted to use the UTR to connect all my devices easily instead of signing in one by one. The building offered an open WiFi network, not even a portal, you just connect to the WiFi and you’re good to go.

I tried to connect my UTR to it but I kept saying no internet and asking me to re-authorize or sign back in, which I clicked multiple times but without any luck. I even tried power cycling and factory resetting the UTR but it kept giving me the error. When I click sign-in, it takes me to Safari (I’m on my iPhone) and the Apple captive portal page loads with “success”, so internet is working!

Surprisingly, there’s another open network there, that I was able to connect to and this one worked just fine with the UTR.

I was able to connect each of my devices to the “problematic” WiFi network that the UTR had issues too and they too connected just fine.

UTR is on the latest firmware and I can’t see any reason for it not working. Any ideas why?

Short Trip Advice (22 to 29 August)

Landing in Athens on Saturday morning (22nd Aug) and flying out the following Saturday afternoon (29 August). Wife's birthday is 26th. Been watching so many YouTube videos and reading the posts for inspiration but now I feel like I'm suffering from analysis paralysis on how to plan those 7 days.

We're big on food, and enjoy trying different cuisine, including/especially seafood, and I've heard it's better to do that at Athens. My original plan was to stay in Athens the whole time, and do day trips to get explore different parts of Greece.

  • Athens:
    • Visit Acropolis, Acropolis Museum, Ancient Agora --> 1 day worth?
    • Walk around and explore neighborhoods (Plaka, Anafiotika, Psyri, Monastiraki, Syntagma) and enjoy food/cafe, and shopping --> 1 day worth?
  • (Day Trip) One day to visit Agistri and Aigina
  • (Day Trip) One day to visit to Mycenae, Nafplio and Epidaurus
  • (Half Day Trip) Sounio to visit Temple of Poseidon (this would be in the afternoon/evening)
  • Was also contemplating doing one of those 2D1N trips to Delphi and then Meteora, but that's pretty far, not too sure

From above, not counting Delphi and Meteora, that's about 4.5 days of activities but I'm wondering if I might need to set aside more time for the Athens just to take it slower? Thoughts on the plan? Anything I'm missing or should be swapping out or counting incorrectly? Thank you!

Trying to return, no response from company

Got my Bee on Wed, ran into issues and have not heard back from the company. On Saturday, I submitted a return request via the Shop app and have not heard back till today, Tuesday. I also sent them an email yesterday (Monday) and also no response.

Their policy is it must be returned within 7 days and I’m really hoping I don’t have to do a chargeback with my credit card company.

Just frustrating because when I was looking to purchased, had reached out to them via email and got responses within hours and now when I want to return, it’s just crickets…

Is it just my Bee Pendant or is it just bad?

I ordered the Bee Pendant last week. While waiting for it, I use Bee with my Apple Watch and it worked well. Transcription could have been better, but I was pleasantly surprised by the experience.

When my Bee Pendant came yesterday, I set it up and took it out to work and about today, and man, what a disappointment. For one, it is not always listening, which I guess is fine, I can switch to 24H mode, which should work about the same. I kept the mic off at the offce, but turned it on when I was commuting back and that's where things went south.

As I was walking home and had some thoughts, so I just raised the Bee Pendant to my mouth and spoke my thoughts into it. I confirmed the LED was Green.

But when I got home, I wanted to work on that, and noticed that it had not recorded anything. None of the surrounding audio, not even the train announcement, or the conductor who came up to me to check the ticket. Even what I said on the walk back didn't show up.

Is this normal? Where did I go wrong? The device was fully charged (100%) and I confirmed LED was Green the whole time. Not a good Day 1 experience.

Comet vs. Comet Pro vs. Comet Q Performance?

Got the Comet and Comet Pro when they first launched. I noticed that with the Comet Pro, performance is much better (i.e., smoother, remote mouse almost in sync with local mouse) vs. that of the Comet, even though both have the same specs (ARM Cortex, quad-core, DDR3 1 GB / eMMC 32 GB). I've asked around and it seems that maybe it could be my setup that's the issue, but. considering all my Comets (non pro and pro) are hardwired, not sure what else I could do.

This is with both running the latest firmware and I got tired of switching setups, so the Comet Pro is on my more critical devices where I want the performance (i.e., laptops/desktops) and the Comet on "lesser" devices like homelab computers.

With the Comet Q, I'm curious if performance is going to be even worse than the Comet because of the lower memory and storage (LPDDR4 512 MB / NAND 512 MB).

Mudi 7 is a great travel router, as long as you're not using cellular overseas

Got my Mudi 7 when it first launched, and being in the US, got the US version to use with US carriers. It's worked great, but recently had a work trip come up to parts of Asia so I figured it'd be an interesting experiment to bring it along.

For background, when I go on these trips, I used to have the Beryl AX, and last year, upgraded to the Slate 7. For this trip, I packed the Mudi 7 and Slate 7.

Now that my trip is almost wrapped up, figured I'd share my thoughts:

THE GOOD

Mudi 7 is now my go to travel router, but not for reasons you'd think.

  • Built-in battery. This was a gamechanger for me because it allowed me to use one less charger. I have a travel charger with 3 USB-C and 1 USB-A port, that I use to charge my devices, and with the Mudi 7, I can also power it with this adapter, saving me from having to bring another one. With other travel routers, like the Beryl AX and Slate 7, I have to use a dedicated power adapter because when I unplug a device from the travel adapter, it has to re-calculate the wattage to redistribute, so there's a brief cut in power to all devices. Not an issue for laptops, tablets, and phones, but is for a travel charger
  • Connect directly to laptop via USB-C. I use a MacBook and in the past, to have a wired connection, I'd have to bring a dongle and ethernet cable to connect to the travel router. With the Mudi 7, I can connect it directly to my laptop via a USB-C (3.0) cable and have a connection. I already carry USB-C cables for charging, so this lets me remove 1 other item.
  • Screen Control. Like the Slate 7, the Mudi 7 has a screen for easy config and status. Unlike my Slate 7 where I need to scroll through screens, I can see all the important information at a glance on my Mudi 7, like WiFi, mode, VPN. On the Slate 7, I'd need to scroll from screen to screen for the information.
  • Faster VPN Speeds. Among the 3 travel routers I own, this provided me with the fastest VPN speeds, which made using it an easy choice.

THE BAD

  • Don't rely on using the Mudi 7 for cellular connectivity overseas. You might get lucky and the country you're visiting will have bands that your version supports, but if you're traveling across continents, that's probably unlikely.
  • What to do with the other travel routers. Was not expecting the Mudi 7 to become my default travel router. Now I'll have to sell either the Slate 7 or Beryl AX. Previously, my Slate 7 was primary and Beryl AX was secondary, but won't be needing so many anymore.

OTHER THOUGHTS

  • Get a compact case for the Mudi 7. I got a cheap one from Amazon, and don't use the one that came with the device. This made carrying it so much easier.
  • USB 2.0 vs. USB 3.0. My VPN speeds were closer to 300Mbps, and while a USB-C 2.0 cable would have sufficed, I found using a 3.0 cable getting me closer to max throughput

10 Hour Layover - Thoughts on Options Contemplated?

Have a 10 hour layover coming up, flight arrives at 2200 and departs at 0800 next day. I'm contemplating a couple of options:

1. Book a Stopover Hotel. I've not done this before, and I am from a visa-free country. Do I just go through customs/immigration like I'm visiting Doha and then just take an uber or taxi over to the airport from there? Do I need to get Qatar currency or could I swipe my credit card as needed? Anything else I need to consider?

2. Stay at Al Mourjan Lounge. This would be a paid option on this trip, if I did it. Last time I had such a long layover, I didn't really get much rest. Could not get any of the sleep pods they offered and while the food was great, can only eat so much.

3. Stay at Al Maha Lounge. I have access to the lounge, but considering my long layover, I don't know if I would be allowed in? I don't think there's any sleeping options here?

Things I'm not considering:

  • Transit Accommodation. I reached out but was denied
  • Oryx Airport Hotel. Too expensive (~USD400) so not really worth it to me
  • Roaming the airport and sleeping somewhere. Don't think I can get comfortable even sleeping in the pods as I will have a roller carry-on
  • Changing second flight to get a shorter layover. Cost is prohibitive
  • Transit Tours. I'm traveling from Asia to America, so it's more than a day's worth of travel and would really prefer to rest

Leaning towards 1., it's probably the most complex of all, and my first time doing it, any tips would be much appreciated. I imagine with this option, when I come back to the airport, it's just like checking in to any other flight since I would already have my boarding ticket, and can just go straight through immigration?

How do you guys travel with AVP on international economy flights?

Just curious. Flew on an international economy flight, and this is one of the better middle eastern airlines, and while j brought my AVP in my carry-on, just felt like it was cumbersome to take out and use.

Maybe I’m missing something. What works for you?

Anyone with an iPhone on iOS 26.5 able to get encrypted RCS working?

Seems like Apple enabled it and T-Mobile has it, but for some reason, I’m not getting it since all my texts to Android devices are still unencrypted.

Anyone else seeing a different experience?

Homebridge Showing Old Accessories

For a long time, I had Zigbee devices connected to Hubitat, which connected to Homebridge via Homebridge Hubitat plugin (https://github.com/tonesto7/homebridge-hubitat-tonesto7/#readme).

It worked great, but as I added more and more devices to Homebridge, I wanted to remove those that could connect directly to Homekit. Hubitat had it's own Homekit integration, so I removed the Hubitat plugin from Homebridge and then added Hubitat directly to Homekit.

All is working fine, and has been for a couple of weeks, but recently, I as poking around in Homebridge and noticed that it was still showing devices that were connected to Hubitat. They're 'live' because when I toggle the state of the accessory, for example locking or unlocking a door lock, it would reflect accordingly in Homebridge.

I've confirmed to have deleted the Hubitat plug-in from Homebridge, and removed the app from Hubitat.

In Homebridge > Settings, I've also confirmed that "Keep Accessories Of Uninstalled Plugins" is disabled, and as far as I can tell, it's always ben disabled.

I thought maybe Homebridge was pulling all my Homekit devices into that view, but that is not the case. I also have other hubs that connect directly to Homekit, like Lutron and Hue, and their accessories don't show up in Homebridge like those of Hubitat.

When I look at the accessories in Homebridge, the ones that are connected to Hubitat show the IP address of my Hubitat hub in the Bridge IP field towards the end of the page. The accessories connect to Homebride, such as my Ring devices, show 127.0.0.1 as the Bridge IP. So it seems like Homebridge knows these devices are no longer a part of it, and part of Hubitat, and reflecting that accurately, but still shows it for some reason.

My Homebridge is v2.0.2 and I saw this issue when on 1.x as well.

Any idea why this is happening?

Pay with Apple Pay with Cards from iPhone?

I have a MBP M1 Pro that I have a couple of my cards loaded into Wallet, however I have a bunch more cards in the Wallet on my iPhone.

On the Mac, is there a way for me to make it use the cards on my iPhone when trying to make a payment, instead of using the ones that is on the Mac. When in clamshell mode and I can't get to the Touch ID, it seems to allow me to, but when I am using the laptop normally, it doesn't give me the option. Continuity is enabled.

Suggestions for getting rid of construction trash?

No, not looking to dump it off I-95…

Did some DIY on the patio and have some stones and broken up concrete to get rid off. Anyone got recommendations on how to get rid of them?

Renting a dumpster seems overkill for for 6’x4’x2’ but maybe I’m wrong?

Anyone used one of those Craigslist or FBM ads where they take away your trash? Would those be cheaper than the dumpster?

Or is there a better way of doing this that I’m not aware of? Thanks!

Brume 3 or Beryl 7 as VPN Serve

Looking to install either a Brume 3 or Beryl 7 at my parent's house to use as a VPN Server.

Both are the same price, both have identical VPN speeds, so I'm not sure which one I should be getting.

Was contemplating the Beryl 7, since it has WiFi, and even though I won't be using it, but always nice to have a backup WiFi functionality in case the main one goes down? But I like the smaller size of the Brume 3, and I imagine it might be better for long-term, 24/7 operation vs. the Beryl 7 which is more of a travel router, so not ideal for 24/7 functionality?

The device will be used purely as a VPN Server (WireGuard), so it would be sitting behind another router (yes, I understand it will be Double NAT and will account for that). Any reason to get one over the other?

Thank you!

Where to put peer relay?

I recently came across Peer Relays in Tailscale and was reminded of the poor connectivity when on a recent trip and figured I could utilize this feature then next time I'm there.

Read these articles, but still unsure of the location:

My home network has a public IPv4 but at the remote location I was at, it was CG-NAT. I also have a node at a relative's home that I could use as a backup and that's also CG-NAT.

On my home network, I have several devices on Tailscale (computers, Apple TV, NAS) that I could use as a Peer Relay, but if I'm trying to connect to my home network to use it as an Exit Node, should I be using a device on that same network as a Peer Relay? That's the part I'm confused.

If so, would it look something like this:

Remote Device/Location --> Peer Relay Device on Home Network --> Exit Node on Another Device on Home Network

Or would I need to find another location, or even rent a VPS, for the Peer Relay?

Anyone else having issues with receiving OTP?

Not sure if it's just me or a wider issue: I'm not getting OTP messages from some businesses that use OTP verification.

Examples include T-Mobile (surprisingly) and PNC Bank.

My SMS is working as I'm able to receive text messages from other numbers (had a a couple of friends text me without issue). I'm also able to get OTPs from other businesses as well (e.g., Xfinity).

Thankfully, I don't rely on it as much as many companies have other alternatives like Passkeys, but for those companies stuck in the stone ages, it's frustrating.
