Handheld Video Synthesizer for video art

Hey glitch art people. I enjoy the sub and show you a video game device I’ve repurposed as a video synthesizer. I have all the code on GitHub and you can make one for yourself with off the shelf products. If you’ve done rpi projects using ssh or aren’t scared of a terminal it’s pretty easy to do. I have a lot of pixel art and glitch video effects as well as several open source video effects packages built in that can be chained to make custom effects.

It’s really fun to jam out on the deck and try layering different effects and saving the best settings to a deck to use later.

A tour of "decks" on the Handheld Video Synthesizer, HVS-80

First up big thank you to Andrei_jay and his community. Thank you to everyone for the kind words. I didn't expect video artists to be so welcoming to a complete n00bs. I've been adding features and functionality and wanted to show everyone what it can do.

Again I am a total newb and don't know all the words so feel free to help me use better terminology. It's hard to demo one handed and goes a lot easier with two hands.

It's really fun to just take this out and jam out layering effects and playing different videos. I am using SYSTEM SEOUL music because it changes a lot and they have high contrast. I got into them last week when they did a really good DJ on NTS radio. Also you can stream NTS on the HVS-80 mostly because I like listening to NTS. It's not for everyone.

Just a disclaimer. if you want one of these don't buy this version. I will be making it for the CM4 with the GPi case 2 because it has a dock with HDMI out and usb ports for a midi controller and capture devices. I would recommend waiting until I definitely get it to work. The case with dock plus the CM4 cost about $150 shipped. You need to be comfortable in a terminal and SSHing into a pi.

Video remix of SYSTEM SEOUL on a handheld video synthesizer I am developing

I tried to post this earlier but was told that the video tag is only for official videos. This is fan made. I just made this last night but will eventually release the software for free.

I’m from NYC and don’t know a lot about Korean hiphop but I love SYSTEM SEOUL. Their stuff really feels like it’s from the future.

Proof of concept, portable handheld rpi video synth. AUTO_WAAAVE running on a rpi zero 2w in a retrofit GPi case

Hey all I’m new to video synths. I’m trying to make a hand held video synth. I have ported andrei_jay’s auto_waaave to run on this portable RPi device. This is running as a rom inside retro pi. The case costs about $60 and the rpi zero it’s running on goes for $20-42.

I will be ironing out the links and figuring out usability. Right now it’s fun to mess around with. I want to eventually put out everything open source. I just need to make sure I’m not stepping on andrei’s toes cause he sells hardware. This is just using off the shelf parts.

Handheld video synthesizers?

Hello. Please excuse my naiveté when it comes to video synthesizers. I am a developer who makes off grid radio gaming devices. We already use a gameboy style RPi case. I am investigating adding a camera like a gameboy camera and making programs that adapt open source video synthesizers for hand held use. you could use i in a docking station with a usb/midi controller for VJing. imagien bringing 2-4 and using a video mixer. I've been searching for portable handheld video synths, but I think I'm using he wrong search terms. has anyone made something like a game boy or tablet that is a video synth/sampler?

I think most people here are into analog and modular synths which obvious is cooler, but I was hoping y'all could point me in the right direction when it comes to how the UI should work.

If anyone knows this world but doesn't have the technical skills to develop I'd be open to collaborating.

I'm also curious if people had a handheld video synth console what would you want it to be able to do? I was imagining that you could make video mixes/playlists on the handheld on a train or in an small apartment and them play them at shows. how useful/important is it to have a camera on the device to record video or take live footage of a show, apply effects to and then stream? if you were live streaming what are the most important platforms to be on?

I've done a lot of programing of firmware and software for microcontrollers and SBCs I'm just new to digital video synthesis. the device I'm talking about would cost about $125-175 in off the shelf part plus whatever the cost of the camera is.

Thank you!

The roads would work better if everyone else was like me

Has anyone else noticed how annoying it is to share the road with people who are different than you especially if they have different driving styles? Why can't everyone just be like me and we wouldn't have so many problems. The way I drive is perfect. Some people drive slower than me others drive faster but it's pretty clear the benchmark with which all other drivers should be measured is me and what I do. Upvote if you agree that you are not part of the problem.

Let's unite together against other drivers.

Recent polls with their impacts on the futures markets and on a GEM style fundamentals + polling model.

The biggest movers recently are texas on the day several polls dropped and NY17 on a republican funded poll with a big sample size. T, but this is still a convenient way to see how big the impact of a poll has on markets vs models.

What you're seeing here is there is an absence of good polling in the house races so the models move a LOT but not as much as the markets. In races with lots of good polling like tx senate the market movement is closer to the model movement. In races liek ME the polling regarding troy Jackson is catching up with expectations.

Market prices this far out are so based on fundamentals that JUST 2024 presidential vote margin is tightly correlated with price in hundreds of markets.

I have been building a customizable scatter plot maker for my election dashboard. I was surprised by how tightly correlated market prices are to fundamentals especially 24 presidential margins. In the comment I will show you a graph of a replication of GEM's methodology and how that's even closer.

Fundraising scatter plot for House, Senate, and all seats "in play"

This is another new graph from my midterm election dashboard. Just a fair warnign it's a bit of a maximalist take but I use this tool daily for following prediction markets, polling, and fundraising.

First graph is house races, then senate races, then all that are "in play" 25-75%. color is the current probability of control from markets. I think the purple scale ranges from 25%-75%

If you see anythign that looks wrong please let me know. I have been having some trouble aggregating data correctly.

I also added some really in depth numbers for each race including a histogram of the margins and turnout markets.

Dummymander Watch: What prediction markets say about Gerrymandering attempts backfiring this midterm election.

In full disclosure I just learned the term "Dummymander" recently and wanted to add some panes to my political futures election dashboard about it.

TLDR; political futures markets imply dems will net pick up 5.7 seats from gerrymandering backfires.

The idea of gerrymandering is to make many +5ish seats for your party and concentrate your opposition in extremely safe seats. In an electin where generic dems do 5-10 points beter than 24 or cook political report ratings you can have these seats flip. most of the ones most likely to flip are in Ohio and Texas.

A disclaimer: what my dashboard is and is not.
My dashboard is not in any way predictive analytics. it's not an election model based on predicting events in the future liek 538. there are already people who do that well. What this model does is take the market probabilities for each race and does a monte carlo simulation of uncorrelated races. this lets people see what hundreds of political futures market mean in the aggregate. I built this tool for myself to track futures markets without having 50 tabs open at once that I refresh every day. My dashboard stays in it's lane. it's descriptive not predictive. the spread on the probability does not in any way take into account the uncertainty of time it just measures market vibes RN.

I don't see anyone else estimating dummymandering so I figured I'd share and be clear about they claims I am making. I do statistics for a living, I am a relatively successful political futures trader for nearly a decade, but I'm also just some guy on reddit.

Anyone else love the Hormuz markets?

I like to buy a little bit of a lot of markets to be diversified. This market has been a rollercoaster and a lot of fun. Mostly was just betting that MAGA bettors are overly optimistic and too willing to trust Trump. If you make 10 bets this way you’ll probably win 6/10.

Ive been betting on politics for about a decade. With kalshi and polymarket taking millions in sports betting there is a lot of amateur political betting money in the market and it’s probably the best time to make money betting on politics.

I didn’t time this market particularly well but it’s turned around in my favor.

I had heard of the guy behind worms about a year and a half ago as someone that knew really good hash from the scene in Maine and the new york growers scene. I heard he was trying to start a maine style small single source rosin company in NY.

I can’t tell you a lot about Wurmz because I don’t know much beyond that he’s a small operation in queens and moving to the the Hudson Valley in all living soil and it’s single source which means one person is cultivating the plant and washing the rosin. This is also “soil to oil” which is living soil single source which a lot of people think are the best practices. In my experience fire is fire and there are no rules to the best cannabis but what matters is attention to detail, consistency, and constant testing. I saw this interview where the interviewer asks Eminem if he’s the goat. He says It’s not for him to say, but that he puts in the work to try and be in the conversation. Wurmz is putting in the work to be in the conversation so let’s get into it.

I bought this rosin with my own money paying full price at cannabis realm in white plains. Nothing like going to cannabis realm and taking a sample before going to O’Mandarin or the korean wing spot or h mart cafeteria. park before you smoke people but it’s a great place to be gassed up and hungry.

I was glad to see Wurmz ran Cosmopils from exotic genetix. I am a fan of EG seeds and a candy gas in general. This rosin smells bright and sharp like juicy fruit sour garbage with a little fuel. It’s hard to tell wha fruit is in there but it seems like pineapple ginko berry, and grape. The terps aren’t super high but it has nearly 1% limonene which means it’s bright in flavor and effects. it also seems to hit hard

It’s not just the limonene. it’s high in CBG for a modern strain. that with the terms it smokes similar to a really terpy citrusy Acapulco gold because it’s high in limonene, CBG, and has some good chem to it. you get that uplifting feeling with a body and physical head high. it feels much more modern but it’s a similar high. it’s one foot Acapulco gold and one foot super boof or candy fumez. Very good with caffeine for a hippy speed ball.

The real question is where do they fall among other NYS hash brands. I think the benchmark for quality/price (value) is DTF. It’s not the best but it’s probably the best value in the higher end rosin. The Wurmz jar is $5 more per gram and well worth it. I think the jar justifies the price premium if not more. The Wurmz slightly edges out DTF in value but maybe I just really like this strain. DTF’s Super boof was great but it’s not as good as the best super boof I’ve had. Cosmopolis is on of the best candy gas I’ve had. This is really sour and pungent in a way that would lure fruit flies.

I saw that they placed 31th out of 77 in the master’s of rosin with their first batch. Not bad company. I’ve had maybe a dozen of the brands in MoR this year and I think the place lines up with how it’s smoking in my home. This is better than the MFNY rosin at $10 less.

I’m glad I picked up two jars and I’m curious to hear from other people about how you liked it. From what I understand it’s in a few dispos in the city, LI, as well as cannabis realm and farmer’s choice in the hudson valley. Apparently Planet Nugg on LI sold out of the town the same day the delivery was made.

I hate giving number but everyone wants to scroll to the bottom. I would give it and 8.5 for being in the 85th percentile of hash. I look forward to to seeing them dial in their grow and getting better. This is a hell of a way to enter the market.
