I’m at my nth rewatch of the show, and with every rewatch I hate more and more how Ted gives Marshall some of the most absurd and ridiculous advice.

Ted constantly reminds everyone that it has only been a month since Marshall and Lily broke up, but the moment Marshall starts looking even slightly better, Ted is already ready to leave him alone at the apartment . Like, dude, you were just emphasizing how devastated he was, and now suddenly he’s fine because he had one or two better days?

And then there’s the Lily side of it. Ted completely fails to understand that Lily is going through the breakup too except she’s also dealing with an enormous amount of guilt because she broke the marriage and confusion about what she wants from her life. If she doesn’t take some time to figure out who she is outside of her marriage, how is she ever supposed to know whether leaving was the right decision? She was lonely in San Francisco she was going through her own emotional breakdown, and she was trying to figure out her career and identity. Meanwhile, her best friend is sitting in his apartment, bitching about her while claiming to be "supporting" Marshall.

And honestly, Barney was clearly trying to push the two of them back together, even if he went about it in the most Barney way possible. Once you get the full context later especially when you realize that Barney was the one who went to Lily and and told her to com back, while simultaneously trying to stop Marshall from getting involved with other women his actions make a lot more sense. He was basically trying to repair their relationship while pretending to be the bad guy. And him giving marshal some info about credit card, and leaving him unnoticed in the strip club, so he can meet lily, but we get know it's not her but some guy who stole her credit card.

That’s what makes the whole thing so interesting on a rewatch: Ted thinks he’s being the supportive best friend, but a lot of his advice is actually coming from his own frustration with Lily, while Barney, of all people, is quietly doing more to bring Marshall and Lily back together.
