Question about Memorials by Richard Chizmar ending

*Obviously major spoilers

I just finished reading it. Something I couldn't figure out is how towards the end when the cult members had the main group surrounded in the woods, were all of them willing participants in the set up? (e.g Jenny, Craig, etc...) Or did the main cult leaders somehow possess random townspeople to help with the sacrifice?

Also what went wrong with the ritual? At first I thought the fire creature was the god they were summoning, but then it started attacking the cult instead

Does this look like I should have gotten stitches?

Cut my thumb after a knife slipped while I was doing dishes on Monday (first photo is right after it stopped gushing blood, second is today)

Thought there was no way something this small would need stitches, but im second guessing it now that it almost looks like it's getting bigger.

It's stopped bleeding completely now, but I went through several bandaids the first day because it kept leaking through (third slide)
