Clssic Mystey Movies Update

An update to my previous post;

https://www.reddit.com/r/CozyMystery/s/bCHwmiqYOz

Thanks for the friendly comments and suggestions for other movies that would be a cozy fit.

I wasn't sure if adding to the original post would get it noticed again or not; hence a separate update.

I've had a lot of medical issues with my wife in the hospital for the last week, so these kind of movies are a good release from the stress involved there.

More details of some series movies mentioned before;

Up top - A trailer where Nick Charles from "The Thin Man" meets Philo Vance.

Philo Vance - Before William Powell did the Thin Man movies, he did 4 "Philo Vance" ones. I had only known of one, "The Kennel Club Murder" so was happy to find there were 3 more. There are other movies after these with other actors, but I haven;t seen those yet.

I haven't read the book series by S Van Dine either, but I think the Powell movies might be the better versions based off his acting skills. Not too much humor in these except for Philo's interactions with Police Sergeant Heath, played by Eugene Pallette in all four movies.

Sherlock Holmes - He should be well known to everyone. The best set of movies are probably the ones with Basil Rathbone as Holmes and Nigel Bruce who played Watson. The first couple of films were set in the original Holmes' era and the rest move into the then "modern times", going against spies as well as criminals. Many movies and TV shows made since then including the SF animated show "Sherlock Holmes in the 22nd Century"

Charlie Chan - Charlie Chan was originally a set of 6 novels about a Chinese Homicide detecting working in Honolulu, Hawaii. Created by Earl Derr Beggars based off of a real detective, the movies were a huge hit at the time. A few early ones didn't do so well and some are even lost, but Warner Oland did 15 with Number One Son Lee , played by Keye Luke. After Oland passed away, 22 more were made with Sydney Toler and Number Two Son, Jimmy, and finally 6 more after that with Roland Green.

These have a lot of humor in them between Charlie and his sons, and with the later added driver, "Birmingham Brown". Charlie also went from a local detective to a world hopper and added spies to hi suspects aw well as crooks.

Probably inspired by Charlie Chan's success, there were other Oriental detective movie series made - Mr Moto with Peter Lorre and Mr Wong with Boris Karloff.

Boston Blackie - 14 movies starring Chester Morris. Based on the character created by Jack Boyle. Blackie is not a sleuth but a jewel thief and crook with a code of honor. I've only seen the first so far, "Meet Boston Blackie" but enjoyed it. Some good humor between Blackie and the police, his sidekick "Runt" and the female lead.

Mike Shayne - 7 films with Lloyd Nolan and other films after with different actors. Shayne is a Private Eye created by Brett Holiday. I've seen the first two but its been a while so I'll have to rewatch. I do remember some humor in them.

The Lone Wolf - 9 with Warren Williams, plus many with other actors. Based on the character created by Louis Joseph Vance. Like Boston Blackie, the The Lone Wolf is a likeable thief. Its been a while on these also but I remember liking them.

The Saint - 5 movies with George Sanders and other movies with other actors .Based off of the character created by Leslie Charteris. I haven't seen the movies yet but did watch the TV series growing up with Roger Moore. These are on my list to watch when I get to them. The Saint, Simon Templar, is a Robin Hood type character who helps others in need.

The Falcon - 16 movies total, most starring George Sanders or his real life brother, Tom Conway. I'm not a fan of Tom Conway so I've skipped this series. These are supposed to be copies of "The Saint" series in many ways and the studio was sued over this

Single movies update;

The Studio Murder Mystery 1929 - a cheating actor is murdered on a movie set. A young girl he was cheating on his wife with is the main suspect. A comedy writer who works with the studio is in love with her and tries to clear her. Lots of humor with his insults and snappy patter with the police. Warner Oland stars as a movie director.

The Unholy Night 1929 - In London on a very foggy night, 4 men are strangled and Lord Montague is almost the next. Scotland Yard gets involved an we learn that all are part of a an old army regiment. 9 others survive and Scotland Yard have all taken to Lord Montague's home. There, Boris Karloff shows up as a creepy lawyer that says another member of the regiment, thrown out in disgrace, has died and left any survivors of the regiment a million pounds among themselves, and another million going to his daughter with the survivors being her caretakers. Not a lot of humor but a good mystery that will keep you guessing. Ends with a seance given by a creepy Asian mystic.

The Bat Whispers 1930 - A very unusual movie. The Bat is a thief and a murderer and kills and robs a man under police protection. His shadow is very bat-like from his mask and costume, but comes years before Batman or the pulp hero, The Black Bat. After the first robbery, the main plot moves to the house of a bank president who's bank has just been robbed. The Bat and others arrive looking for the stolen money in the house that has a few secret doors and passages. The unusual parts of the movie are the many uses of miniature sets and the camera angle that go with it, and the breaking of the fourth wall at the end. The maid and a private detective give some good humor to the film.

The Death Kiss - 1932 - another jerk of an actor killed on stage by a real bullet instead of a fake one. A main suspect is the ex-wife who's still on the life insurance. The lead is a studio writer who loves her and wants to clear her. Some more humor between the writer and the police. Stars Bela Lugosi as part of the studio management. Features some unusual camera work as it doesn't appear steady and some scenes are thus "wobbly"

To those who got all the way thought the wall of text above, thanks. If I do another update it should be much shorter, as long as there's still interesting in the Cozy Cousins and the mods don't mind.

One of the things I really like about watching these is seeing the world as it was at that time, not recreated. The cars and fashions, etc. In "Charlie Chan at the Olympics" we get to see actual 1936 footage from the Berlin Olympics, and some scenes take place on the Hindenburg before it was destroyed. In Hildegarde Withers "Murder on a Honeymoon", we see a seaplane gong from California to Catalina Island back when you could sometimes smoke even on a short hop and you had to climb in and out of the plane.

Classic Mystery Movies

Hi all. I've been a cozy mystery fan long before I even knew what they were, and even before I could read. Some of my favorite old mysteries are a bit cozy like and fun, though not pure cozy.

I didn't see a lot of info on some early movies that cozy fans would like so I thought I'd point a few of them out for fellow fans. I'm still watching and finding new ones so if there's interest I or others could add more as they're found. While some of these are not true cozy, I think cozy fans would like them a lot.

A term some people might not know for early movies is "pre-code" Early movies could basically put anything they wanted on screen, but the Hayes code from 1934 put some limits on what could be filmed. A lot of things were banned with the code - nudity, drug use, graphic violence, LGBTQ, and crime and sin could not be glorified, and other things that were frowned on at the time. Ministers, police, judges and people in the government were usually shown as good people and not idiots or crooks

The Movies-

Hildegarde Withers - a prim and proper school teacher with a sarcastic personality gets involved with murders. Based on a book series written a the time, I found these fun. The first three are considered the best starring Edna May Oliver. She went to another studio after that and they found other actresses to play the part

The Thin Man series - With Nick and Nora Charles, and Asta their dog. I've seen these as listed both yes and no as cozy

Torchy Blane - a go out and get'em reporter and her police boyfriend. Fast paced and funny. It was said she was the base for DC's Lois Lane when they created her.

Abbott and Costello - "Meet the Killer, Boris Karloff", "Who Done It?" and "Hold that Ghost"

Mr and Mrs North - a movie and a 1950's TV series. A married couple help solve crimes. Probably a good base that "Hart to Hart" used.

The Whistler series - Red Skeleton is a radio crime show host that gets involved in real mysteries

Ticket to a crime. A Private Eye and his secretary solve a murder in an exclusive country club.

One Frightened Night - another spooky house with humor, secret passages and murder.

The Crooked Circle - A group of amateur sleuths called "The Sphinx Club" catch a member of the "Crooked Circle" crime gang. They vow revenge and go after the Sphinx Club's leader. Features a mysterious Hindu, Zazu Pitts as a frightened maid that reminds me of Olive Oyl, a blustering cop, and an old house with more secret doors and passageways than you can count. Lots of fun.

The Cat and the Canary - 4 different versions at least were made. I've only seen the one with Bob Hope. Spooky house with an insane escaped prisoner on the loose.

Footsteps in the Dark - With Errol Flynn. His character's wife thinks he's having an affair when he's secretly writing mystery novels. Real crime gets involved and they have to solve a murder.

Shh! The Octopus - a bizarre story with two detectives in a deserted lighthouse dealing with a crime boss called the "Octopus" the ending is the strangest part of the movie

Tomorrow at 7. The serial killer "the Black Ace" sends a playing card to victims. Some future victims gather in a creepy house for protection with some bumbling cops and a crime novelist

Horror Island - an abandoned castle on a island. hidden passages, booby traps, fun . Has some Scooby vibes to it.

The Ninth Guest - trapped party guests in a penthouse being knocked off.

Murder at Midnight - guests at a house watching a skit played out about a cheater caught with a man's wife are shocked to find someone switched the blanks in the gun with real bullets

Sherlock Holmes, Boston Blackie, Mike Shayne, Charlie Chan, The Lone Wolf, Philo Vance - detective movies compared to cozy, but cozy like in the era they were made with their humor and lack of foul language and extreme violence. Back when you got shot, grabbed your chest and fell down with no blood seen.

TOS game "Secret of Vulcan's Fury" and TNG episode "Gambit"

Maybe I missed it, but I've never seen it discussed that the 2 part TNG episode "Gambit" could be the base version of the game mentioned. I originally thought the game came first but it looks like it was the other way around.

Both sound very alike in basic plot and both stories were written by D C Fontana

Buzzworthy Post

So what happens if someone comes along and down votes you to 99? and then back to 100?

Can you lose and regain an achievement?

I know I've gotten repeat notices in my inbox at least for a post when this happens at various levels

Another Operation Annihilate post - seems the others are locked

Just watched this (again) last night. Realized a few things that brought up some questions

  1. When the pilot was heading towards the sun at the beginning, he must have had a very strong will to fight the pain and not die from it. Its been so long that I'd seen it my memory was it being Sam in the ship.
  2. When Kirk talks to Aurelan, it sounds like she's not infected yet. When they enter the home, she's trying to keep the vent closed like they just got in. But she and Peter are infected and Sam is dead. I would have thought that the creatures would have still been around unless they just sting and then move on and left.
  3. On the ship, Aurelan said that the creatures have been there 8 months, and we see that everyone on the planet is infected. But she was able to hold out all that time and be one of the last to hide, only to get stung right before the Enterprise arrives.
  4. When Spock tries to take over the conn, he says the creatures want control of the ship. What is he being made to do? The ship is already in orbit. Unless he was trying to take the ship to the next system already, it would have made more sense for him to try to go to the transporter room and beam some creatures up (and dim the lights in the ship)

McCoy did say his body was flooded with little creatures. If he did take the ship to another system, they could spawn out of his body, probably killing him, and there would have been potentially hundreds of the creatures running loose. Luckily we didn't see how the creatures reproduce

  1. And with #4 I wonder what the range of the "Brain" actually is that the cells can operate together. Spock felt the will of all the cells in orbit, and the pilot might have been free of all of them except the one in his body, which might be how he was able to fight it.

If Spock had taken the ship to another system, would the creature inside of him still be in contact with the rest?

3D models of Gaia and the Planeteers, rigged and game ready.

Hi all!

I asked a friend of mine ro capture some 3D models of the 6 characters mentioned in the title. We already have a Captain Planet and some of the villains I think.

My job was to rig them for animation and game play. I also added rings to each and Suchi to MA-Ti, though you can take him off if you want.

Scooby Doo like stories before there was a Scooby Doo.

Midnight Fangs by Arthur Leo Zaggat

A 1930's story I just read has a woman take an author who just wrote a book about werewolves to her house. Her much older husband and his teenage son were there and she was afraid the son was turning into a werewolf. In the end, she was trying to get the father to kill his son in fear, in order to get him out of the way of the money and the author was there a neutral backup for her alibi. She had a large dog killing neighborhood farm animals hidden in her closet. I can picture the gang solving this one.

Some of the magazines back then told their writers to write mysteries that looked supernatural at first, but had a logical ending when solved. I think this lasted a couple of years

Mystery inc before there was a Mystery Inc. Lots of stories from that era though some are a bit rough

All the things Mickey did to the horse, the way Minnie snubbed Mickey more than once.

Miles Vorkosigan series and sorrow.

I'm 66 years years old and having been reading SF, Fantasy, etc for almost all my life, starting with classics like Jules Verne and HG Wells before I was 10.

And now, I pulled out out the first Miles book, one that I had read maybe a year ago, or a little more. I remembered the beginning chapter with him in the academy fairly well, but the rest of it is so faint its like I read it decades ago and its barely remembered.

I'm about half way through it again, and if you asked me what comes next, I couldn't tell you. What I have read is familiar enough that I know I did read it and it wasn't a DNF.

Long term memory seems good so far, and I can remember more about a book read long ago than a recent one.

I'm going to see about getting some memory testing done if I can, but this worries me a bit. Other recent books don't seems as forgotten as this one for some reason. Its not a bad book as others know, but could it be that forgettable?

Diorama

enterprise

Hi all! First post to the Reddit.

I've been a TOS fan since the 60's, though I was to young to watch it in prime time. My first episode was on a Saturday afternoon after Bandstand ended, and it was "The Man Trap'

Since I've retired I've been working on making digital dioramas of shows and cartoons I grew up with, and my 100th is for Trek.

The bridge in the scene is an old 3D warehouse model, and the crew from modder Laz Rojas for Raven's Elite Force game

I've got models for Dehner and Gary Mitchell from "Where No Man has Gone Before", and Lt M'ress from TAS, and might be able to do one for Arex, so I might do some variants.

It looks like I'm only allowed one picture for the post, so here's an angled view of everyone on duty. I had more pics I wanted to post of different angles and close ups, but this is a good view.

Edit - added a video of Kirk running on the ship map. It has generic civilians, male and female from the game I modded it for. The map has ; bridge, corridor, quarters, transporter room, sickbay, briefing room, engineering and the shuttlebay. The game allows for a max party six of 4 for characters but Kirk is by himself here

Opposites

Are there any achievements that are opposites, where going for one stops you from getting another?

I think that something like "Touching Grass" would mean that you weren't on Reddit for X number of days instead of what it does mean.

Saturday afternoon at the movies

Has anybody else recreated this?

It's a little bit before my time but I always like how much you got for your money back in the 1950's and before

I have an app that can download from youtube, and I have a box hooked to the TV that will play videos from an SD card, so my first run was this;

  1. A random b/w trailer - my first was "20 Million Miles to Earth" - Ray Harryhausen SF movie

  2. Classic B/W Popeye cartoon - the first one with Betty Boop

  3. Three Stooges short

  4. An episode from the first Flash Gordon serial

  5. The "Lets All Go to the Lobby" theater commercial

  6. A classic mystery from 1931 - "Murder at Midnight"

It worked out pretty well with some fresh popped popcorn and a Coke.

My second one I'm watching now, the same as above except for different episodes of Popeye, the Stooges, and Flash Gordon, the trailer is "Abbott and Costello meet Frankenstein", and the movie is Bela Lugosi in 1931's "Dracula"

I've got enough sets put together to keep me going for awhile

Adventures of Gulliver - 1968 - Diorama and 3D models completed

Another show finished from my list. Some of the models are better than others - Flirtacia and Tagg are very well done while Gary is a little rough. I rigged them to be game ready, and tried to fix up and repair some errors in my friend's work where I could.

MY 30th classic HB diorama and 3D models set

I now have models for all the shows and MC's of everything I want from HB up to about 1980 - probably about 80% of what was out there. Concentrating mainly on the 60's show at the moment.

Below is the 1966 show "Space Kidettes - almost all the models and textures made for me by a good friend. He did a great job on these.

Scooter, Countdown, Jenny, Snoopy, Pup Star, Captain Skyhook, Static, and the rocket sled and space pirate ship

Classic CN marathons

I just got done recreating 3 classic CN marathons to watch - "June Bugs", "25 Hours of Doo" and "The Big Game XXVIII" with the Coyote and the Roadrunner.

I found out there were a lot of other marathons CN did that didn't know about - like a 18 hour "Marathon of Fools" on April Fools day with Tex Avery shorts, and some other "Big Game" marathons

Did anybody watch these or others back then?

Commercials

How do you guys feel about commercials? Not crappy ads when you stream, but the old fashioned kind that were shown during the broadcast breaks?

When I throw together a binge watch of a single show or to recreate a Saturday morning, I always throw in some commercials from that time in between - mainly cereal, but some candy and toys as well. For me, it was part of the total picture, that and having a large bowl of Froot Lopps or Lucky Charms as I watched.

If its from CN then some of their bumpers are great to add as well.

Since I don't really watch CN anymore, so they do anything like the great stuff they used to - bumpers, Groovies, etc?
