Shopping for used / CPO G90s

Within the next year I'm hoping to acquire a V8, RWD G90. I honestly like the look of the gen 1 pre facelift and post facelift the same, and probably won't be looking at a gen 2 model because I'm hoping to pull this off for under 40K.

Are there any real differences between the pre and post facelift other than exterior styling? It seems they're pretty much the same except for some stylistic changes, but I'd love to hear from some owners. There's incredibly bargains out there on the pre face lift models. I'm confident in the V8 RWD powertrane, but wasn't sure if maybe there were any major issues that were corrected in the refresh.

EDIT :: I realize 17-19 doesn't have android auto / apple carplay. I am very comfortable adding in a NAVIKS module or other similar products, that's well within my DIY comfortability.

G90 With Kids?

For those of you who have a G90 with children, how is it getting car seats in and out, or kids in and out of the car seats in the G90? I've got small kids and I'm looking for a more luxurious and larger daily driver sedan. I had a G70 manual and loved it but it was so annoying getting my kids in and out of it. The G90 looks so beautiful and I love that the rear seats are so luxurious.

Sold my manual G70 today!

With two kids and two dogs, the g70 was fun but it just wasn't working for me anymore. Sold it to my friends car dealership for 19K. I asked them to please leave my very detailed service records in the car for the next buyer and they said they would. I may rejoin the Genesis family at some point, a CPO G90 seems like a dream machine. Who knows what the future holds!

Vintage alarm clock repair

I've got this alarm clock that I believe is from the 70s ? I got it from my grandmother's house and it has sentimental value to me - but it no longer keeps time. I am in eastern PA and trying to find someone who can fix this. I've reached out to my local vintage Audio place and Your Listening Pleasure in Binghamton New York, neither want to touch anything with flippy numbers.

Any advice ?

Friend wants a divorce

Location: NJ

I've got a friend in that wants to leave her partner. Long story short, she's been unhappy for a long time and wants out. There's no prenup, no kids. They've got a house together and a dog. Her feeling is she literally just wants the dog. She's not looking for alimony, money, the property, etc. As far as she's concerned he can keep literally everything as long she she keeps the dog. She's got three big issues. 1. His mom is a divorce lawyer. 2. She doesn't make much money on her own so she's afraid she can't afford representation. 3. She's afraid he's gonna try to take the dog and when they adopted the dog, he signed the paperwork.

What would you guys recommend to a young woman in these circumstances? I know nothing but promised her I'd try to help.

Holy hell I did it. I bought a Ural.

I bought it! A few days ago I posted this link https://www.cycletrader.com/listing/2014-Ural-GEAR+UP-5040640809#sid=385835 to get your guys thoughts and the consensus was that it was a fair price. I got another $200 off and towed it home today.

I am in love. It nearly killed me while loading it onto the trailer - that's when I knew it was meant to be. Here's what I've noticed so far, being a novice motorcyclist AT ALL and being brand new to Ural.

It's got a lot of surface rust in the sidecar footwell. I took the metal end of my folding knife handle and banged it around to check for soft spots and haven't found any, but the paint is really failing. At some point, I may attempt a major disassembly - I know a good powder coating guy in the area.

I don't like the tractor style seats. They seem to force me to be a bit too far forward, I think I want to swap for the OEM bench style seat.

Reverse. I can't stop laughing. I literally just put it in reverse and parallel park and laugh inside the helmet the entire time. This entire machine is absurd.

I'm missing the shovel, the spout for the jerry can - which has gas in it but I don't know how old the gas is? Might just throw it in the lawn mower in case it's not so great. I also have no tool kit and I want to get a full size tarp cover for it. I also have no manual, so I need to get one ASAP. The dimmer switch is also broken off so I'll need to replace that.

Here's my questions for the experienced riders here...

I'm coming up on the 10,000 KM service and the only thing I know for a fact has been done recently is the wheel recalls and an oil change. What should I be looking for?

This is a 2014 Gear Up - is there anything on this bike I should be or could be looking to upgrade, or preventatively address? It seems to run very smoothly (for a tractor).

When the front wheel gets unsettled, MAN does that thing dance. I'm finding if I just don't give it any sudden inputs and not so much fight it but sort of, gently encourage it to straighten out, it does so. Is this just normal Ural insanity or does this indicate a problem? When I'm going straight down the road, the bike definitely shifts a few inches left to right but it always returns to center. It's fascinating. It's like it's in some kind of orbit while moving forward down the road in a straight line.

I cannot put into words how happy I am with this machine. It's absolutely bizarre. I'm already getting compliments on it everywhere I go. I have been lusting after these bikes since I first came across them on instagram in college back in 2012. Now, I have one in my driveway. Oh my God. Dreams come true!

P.S. one last thing - I can't seem to figure out how to kick start? I put it in neutral, but then it seems like it won't find the resistance of a compression stroke. Is there a trick to this or do I need to check something? If it's in gear, it definitely finds a compression stroke but then it attempts to roll the bike.

Considering my first Goldwing...

Background on me - I sold a GS500e because I wanted something that would be easier to share with my kids and my spouse. It was also a sporty bike and I'm not into speed. I want something I could ride to work (mostly 50mph back roads) once a week or ride around town at sub highway speeds.

I've basically come down to two models - a goldwing, and a Ural. I KNOW - polar opposites. Hear me out; my thinking is either one will be more of a "family" motorcycle than my GS500 was. I figure both will also allow me to carry things without wearing a backpack and be much more comfortable to ride.

Here's where I'm really torn. Ural makes it even easier to include young kids and even my dogs. The goldwing will, I presume, be much more reliable, but really only be for myself and my spouse, and the kids when they're older.

My question for Goldwing owners - what's your maintenance and ownership experience really been like? I'm told certain maintenance on a goldwing can be hard because parts are buried. I'm also curious at what ages, if you've been able to, introduce your kids to the back seat?

I'm finally in a position to buy a Ural, but I'm nervous...

Let me preface this by saying, I understand a Ural is not a highway cruiser, it's not a Toyota Camry, it will require some wrenching and love.

Background on me and why I'm looking at a Ural - I sold a GS500e because I wanted something that would be easier to share with my kids and my spouse. It was also a sporty bike and I'm not into speed. I want something I could ride to work (mostly 50mph back roads) once a week or ride around town at sub highway speeds.

My question for Ural owners - what's your maintenance experience actually been like? I'm decent with a wrench. I do my own oil changes, tire rotations, replace bulbs and lines, I've done big brake kit installs on my cars, but I know nothing about Urals and what the ownership really entails.

Trying to figure out how to run Ethernet.

My attic and basement are unfinished. Im currently going into to previous owners coax and phone jacks and running up two pairs of CAT6 riser cable. Getting from the second floor outlets to the attic has proven to be pretty straight forward, but I'm really lose on how to get in between the floors.

I thought going through the stairs was going to make the most sense but I'm now realizing the stairs are encased in pairs of 2x8 joists vertically stacked and those are capped by a plywood sub floor and a sill plate on top and a sill plate on bottom.

How did you guys get your cables between floors ?

Considering a first wrangler, unsure what I'm getting into?

Some background, went from a 2011 Subaru Outback manual to a 2019 Genesis G70 manual and while I still enjoyed the manual I found the reduced capability and increased speed and power were not fun for me. My theory is now that I like slow cars that are manual. So here I am!

My wife and I have always been curious about a wrangler but never really been in a position to afford one as a third car until now. I think I'll be offloading my Genesis and looking for a Wrangler Unlimited, manual, under 20K. Are there certain years or trims I should be looking for, or looking to avoid? A cursory google search suggests 06, 11, 15-17 and 19+ as the "good" years but I'd rather hear from first time owners.

I don't own a lift but I am decent with a wrench, I've installed custom roof racks, replaced headliners, done lights, oil changes, even big brake kits on my other cars. I'm not opposed to doing some routine maintenance or upgrades where needed.

The Stranger In My Driveway

Crossposting here while I wait for the r/cars automods to approve!

I've been wrestling with something as a car enthusiast lately, and given todays terrible air quality I figured it would be a good time to sit down and write out my thoughts.

TL;DR :: I'm thinking about selling my Genesis. Yeah that's right, I give you the TL;DR up front - because I CARE ABOUT YOU.

I have a 2019 Genesis G70, 6 speed manual, in what the factory calls "Havanah Red." I bought this car in 2022, partly to replace my Outback, partly as a congrats to myself for getting a new, better paying job. My first ever, manual transmission, rear wheel drive sedan. Given the direction in the auto industry, that's a rare configuration. Given that fewer than 200 manual G70s were sold in the North American market, the car is even more rare.

Is rare, enough? After my 6MT outback I was hell bent on getting another manual, and when I saw the opportunity to have manual rear wheel drive within my budget, I jumped. At first, the car felt lightning fast compared to my anemic 2.5i naturally aspirated boxer. The cooled leather seats were a joy and the stereo sounds fantastic. But... over time... I start to realize that there's just not much you can do to make an inline four cylinder sound good. The hydraulic clutch, uninhibited by throw out bearings, offers exactly none of the mechanical feedback that my Outback's clutch did - a luxury in a traffic, a numbness on a backroad. The back seat is such that you cannot comfortably sit in front of a child seat and so for myself, with two young children, the car doesn't get driven much.

In the beginning, I thought this was a relief. My Outback was totaled but I had my wife's first car - a clapped out 2012 Jetta - to keep mileage off my brand new baby. Now, I find I barely drive this gorgeous car I worked so hard to pay off ahead of schedule. She has no interest in learning to drive stick and frankly why should she? It's our third car. Not only our third but our only manual and the only car that we can't both practically sit in while driving the kids around.

So what am I holding onto? I wrestle with this constantly. You'll never get another manual, RWD four door under 50k, that's not a thing anymore! You'll regret selling it! It's your only manual! It's your only sporty car! There's a lot of hesitation, but Carmax says it's worth 19K (34K miles) What could you do with 19K, car enthusiasts? What can you do with 19K that's better than a RWD, manual transmission four door?

I try to reframe the conversation in my head. What's missing? If not this car (Guinevere, as I call her) what then? I think about what automotive experiences I think I am missing out on, the things I would want to have if I had 19K and not this car. A Toyota Century? A model T? A Honda Goldwing that I could share with my wife or perhaps a Ural sidecar motorcycle I could share with my wife, kids and or dogs?

A lot of enthusiasts will buy a car, drive it for a few years or a few thousand miles, they've had their taste, and they sell it and move on to the next experience. The first few times I encountered that I thought it was insane, but as I've become more financial secure and a bit older, I've grown to understand that's not entirely unreasonable as long as you're making moves within your means. I've begun to think maybe that's just where I'm at with this car - maybe it's a great car, and I've enjoyed it, but it's time for something else.

But am I throwing away something that I can never get back? It's hard to get exact figures but some cursory google research will tell you there's fewer than 300, possibly fewer than 200 manual G70s floating around the NA market. And a manual, rear wheel drive four door IS a rare configuration below 50K in todays market. Will this car wildly appreciate a decade from now? It's a roided up Sonata dude, don't kid yourself. Uglier, less impressive cars have become desirable because no one bought them and they were rare. Face it. The Subaru Baja, the Nissan Murano Cross Cab, Fiat Multipla, Pontiac Aztec. You're gonna hold on to this car on the off chance that maybe it'll be worth 5K more in a decade? I'm more concerned about how I'm gonna find a manual 4 door RWD in a decade within my budget.

Alright reddit. Do your thing. Give me your honest, unfiltered feedback. Am I being a drama queen? Do I need to just man up and sell the damn car? Should the fear of giving up something rare be respected, and I should hold on to it while saving up for other things? Is it worth 19K !? YOU DECIDE!

Unsure of next steps?

Today I purchased a thousand feet of CAT6 and I've begun to fish cable through my 1700 SQ ft two story house. The server and switch(es) will be in the basement. My plan is to run 4 total CAT6 drops to each bedroom, on double keystone wall plates, giving each room four plugs.

This gives me 16 jacks on the second floor, 4 of which will be used for phone / home PBX.

I'll have approximately 10 jacks / 3 phones on the first floor.

I'll have probably only 4 jacks / 2 phones in the basement.

I also intend to replace my ring security system with a home POE camera system with 4 total cameras.

My initial plan was to run a direct line from each jack point down to the server / switch so that any line could be repurposed between phone and Internet as my needs change. It seems like nobody really does this because it's annoying, but is there any other reason to avoid it?

I'm also unsure of where to begin with my actual rack in the basement. Should I be looking for a physical PBX, an Ethernet switch and a camera system switch? Should I try to integrate with one super heavy device? Feeling a bit lost.

Anyone running light weight rotors?

I've got a 2019 G70 RWD 6MT. I'm looking at going down to 18s with more sidewall and maybe a touch more width. While I'm at it I'd like to swap to lower dust pads and lighter weight, two piece rotors so I can shed some unsprung mass while maintaining contact patch.

Anybody got recommendations on pads and rotors? Not tracking the car but definitely doing some spirited backroads.

This week's mods

Installed an R1 concepts big brake kit on the front end - this takes me from two piston front brakes to six piston, adds a slightly larger, vaned rotor, bigger, better pads and stainless steel lines. The difference was immediately noticeable. The brake pedal feels more confident, more linear and I'm able to achieve more braking force with less pedal effort. Feels sporty. In order to clear the calipers, the stock wheels need spacers. I did B2BFABs "flush kit" which is 15mm up front and 20mm in the rear. To finish up, I took it to the shop to mount and balance some falken Wildpeak AT trail and have everything freshly aligned. Very happy with the results.

Technology Connections heat pump upgrade?

I have a 2K square foot home with a heat pump system, living in the north east of the US, and I just finished technology connections YouTube series in which he makes some modifications to his system (which is almost identical to my own) that I found truly interesting.

One of the things he did was rewire the fan to respond to the humidistat as well as the thermostat so even if the set temperature was reached, the system would continue to move air and humidity in winter, or dehumidify in summer, until the set humidity point was reached.

I thought wow, this is brilliant, why isn't every system set up like this. I then thought, could I ask my HVAC guys to modify my system this way? Would there be any downside to this besides I imagine a modest increase in energy usage to run the fan?

LG ThinQ washer seems to run long cycles

I've got an LG laundry machine, model number WM3600HVA, and it seems to run very long cycles. It's done this since new, but I just find it odd. For instances, "normal" cycle, the only thing I change is water temp to cold (trying to be environmentally conscious), and the drum is probably 30-40% full it's a light load - 58 minutes? Is this normal? Am I doing something wrong? I've checked the machine for level many times and it is level, but I can't think of anything else that would cause such long cycles for such light loads.

Antenna Selection

I have a 1938 philco radio that was just refurbished by FYLP in New York. In the storefront it sounded great. I brought it home and purchased the same antenna they used to demo it for me - a Terk indoor AM advantage - but I just have no where near the performance I was hoping for. I get one, MAYBE two stations if I'm lucky. I realize some of this is where I am and my home and other factors - but I came here to ask if there's an antenna I could put on my roof that I could link to this radio for better performance. I want to hear this radio as it was meant to be heard, the way it would have performed when built. Money is no object here. If you wanted to get the best out of your 1938 philco, what antenna are you linking up and is it inside or on the roof? I'm open to all suggestions.
