Trio of traveling companions

Always find myself craving different textures and colors of bone when I’m in a different place.

Little Hawkeyes

My favorite Frost-branded traditionals and the only Pakistan-made knives in my entire collection. Not surprisingly these are also the lowest priced knives I own.. yet I really like them🤷‍♂️ They are properly good pruning knives (which is what they get used for). I’ve been particularly impressed with the blades and how easily they take a keen edge.

Current Collection

I post a lot of the stuff available through my Etsy shop but these are my personal traditional slippies. Probably not gonna post a comprehensive list of each one but if there’s something you don’t recognize just ask.

Custom burnt baddies.. different color examples

Trying more with red bone lately, though I do think blue and green bone color more consistently from the torch. The white ‘winter’ bone muskrat is supposed to come both jigged and lightly burnt (based on stock pics) but kit really didn’t come burnt at all.. love how it looks now tho.

Ink rubbed some smooth white bone

Done a couple with this method for scrimshaw pieces before. This time just thought I’d see how it looks to just keep it plain. It turned out very similar to other versions of ‘Appaloosa’ bone. I wonder if it’s similar to how that’s normally done …Renaissance waxed and highly polished after staining.

CRKT Heron

Lucas Burnley design, one of many made by CRKT. I like the size and heft of this guy more than the Squid.. it’s a bit more ‘slicey’ in terms of cutting geometry too. The front scale is milled peel-ply G10 with a carbon fiber layer. I dyed it with Rit which resulted in sort of a dark plum purple.

Toasted my personal bullet trapper

First one of my own knives I’ve taken the torch to and I’m really happy with it. Still learning about how quickly different kinds, treatments and jigging of bone cause the cover to respond to being burned. Honestly there’s so much variation you just have to feel each one out. I’ve taken to keeping the flame lower and holding it closer for more control. I also highly recommend doing some light hand-buffing afterward as the burned areas take a nice shine.

‘Mood ring’ burnt blue bone

Got 2 here and I think they’re my favorite results so far from torch-burning jigged bone. These are both Frost models, a Black Hills Stockman and a Steel Warrior one-arm Barlow. The burning brings out all sorts of iridescent hues in the cyan-blue bone.. also pleasingly, the torched area polishes up nicely along with the rest of the cover and bolster.

Toasted Black Stag Bone

Was worried it would end up looking like RR’s ‘Cinnamon Bone’ but I like the appearance of this quite a bit better… the color is also much more durable this way

Anyone prefer Marble’s to RR as a budget brand?

Particularly their big boys.. they just seem really excellent. This is their ‘Cigar Jack’ with a clip and spey that I’d take over almost any trapper. I burnt both covers to create a kind of green/gold bone that I think adds a bit of panache.

RR Blue Dragon + burnt = RR Sea Dragon?

Think these are the two newest patterns of the Rough Rider Blue Dragon series, a Peanut and a single-blade Sheepfoot Barlow. Soon as I saw ‘em online I knew what I wanted to do with them. An adjustable butane kitchen torch (for searing) was used.. carefully. Here are the results

Burnt some bone ..fairly happy with the results🤷‍♂️

Suffice to say I understand how the 'sea dragon' effect is created now

Lakeside carry

The total cost of these two was literally $25 ... appropriate cause if they fall in I'm not diving for them

Oldie but a goodie

Camillus LK6.. and yes it’s still available. For years this has been one of the better Camillus offerings and a regular stock item at many big box stores. You may have seen it before, but did you know that it’s a clone of a custom knife? The Anton Malyshev Gnome..👀

Finally PM2’d

After 20 years of gradually accumulating (and loving) Spyderco knives I finally grabbed a PM2. I’ll immediately vouch for it living up to the hype. Went with the SPY27 variant over the S45VN as it seemed like it would suit my sharpening/stropping method more.

I’m very pleased with the texture and color of the cobalt blue G10 and won’t be changing anything about this knife for the foreseeable future. I’m usually an incorrigible ‘modder’ but this knife needs really nothing (save for adding my own oil, tuning the pivot until the action was perfect and keening and stropping the edge). Also I’m a big fan of the spoon clip.

Pros: Everything you’ve heard

Cons: What kind of clothesline were they intending for that lanyard hole?

Civivi Cetos: Free Civivi? Yes please!

Well I was fully unable to resist clamoring to the FREECIVIVI deal at KnifeCenter. Particularly due to it being offered during the big annual Spyderco sale. Ended up getting my very first PM2, and hey! A free Civivi Cetos!!

I’ll post my thoughts in the comments but tldr: It’s excellent and I think recommendable. But is it pushing the Ganzo Adimanti Skimen out of my pocket? No.

Some classic Spyderco models dipping into the budget realm

Guess Spyderco retailers are doing their annual sale thingie again. Was browsing KnifeCenter and noticed a number of heavily discounted models. Specifically some of their long-time Seki city favorites are now sub-$100 …almost like old times (sorta). Gather this might only be going til Friday or possibly the weekend so I wanted to give a heads up.

Gonna have to swap my pick from the CS Verdict to this bad boy

Cold Steel maybe isn’t the best company for compact EDC knives. But due to the Demko Tri-ad lock being the most brilliant knife lock design in existence I stay wanting a small CS Tri-ad knife in my EDC rotation. For a while that had been the Verdict in 4116.1 steel. And well…

Long story short: picking up a Mini Recon 1 Tanto changed my thoughts on that knife completely

It’s my only cattleman but I really can’t get over this guy

This is the Marble’s Black Stag Cattleman’s Jack. SMKW releases ‘black stag bone’ under both the Marble’s and Rough Rider brands (not sure why) but it seems to be done the same way regardless. It’s available in a number of patterns and I think it’s one of their nicer covers.
