People who brag about the drugs they’ve done as though it’s impressive

Like people who come into posts that have the most tangential distant possible relationship to the topic of drugs and somehow find a way to tell you which drugs they’ve taken, or even make fun of people for thinking that whatever drug they took was a hard drug

Like someone who’s like “lol you think coke is a serious drug?” And proceed to go on to allude to a time they did heroin or how they’ve built up a tolerance for fentanyl or some shit.

Sir, these are not brags, and to the vast majority of people who haven’t done heroin, cocaine is a serious drug. Yeah.

Season 5 was an absolute massacre for relationships

Niles finds out Maris is having an affair

Brian leaves Lilith for a man

Roz has to turn away the father of her child

Martin and Sherry split up

And NOBODY… was chasing Frasier in the Ski Lodge

People who either don’t know how to infer something or pretend you can’t make inferences

I want to name this the “I’m not a mind reader fallacy” because that’s what all these idiots say.

It’s absolutely valid to make an educated guess as to why someone did a thing, as long as you’re open that of course you don’t know 100%.

We do this all the time. If you have a friend who’s cheap, you lend them money and they stop returning your calls, it’s a valid inference that they’re avoiding you to delay the time they have to pay you back (or hoping you’ll just stop altogether).

If I say “I think John is avoiding my calls so he doesn’t have to pay me back,” kindly don’t be one of these dipshits who says “can you read his mind?” Or “where did he say that?” Or “oh, you have that in writing from him?”

Welcome to the wonderful world of critical thinking, where you can use context clues and past behaviour to make judgments about a person’s state of mind in lieu of them just telling you.

Honestly, how do some people make it through life if they think that they simply could never ever hazard a guess to someone’s intentions without being a “mind reader”? Dafuq?

“I need advice.. also don’t give me [actual helpful advice] because I won’t do it”

Ok, fuck you then?

“I’m looking to sort out my credit cards… don’t tell me to cut back spending, that’s not an option for me.”

Ok, enjoy crippling debt and a terrible credit score then you idiot. Why even come seeking advice if this is your attitude?

My all time fav? “How to get women? Please don’t tell me to quit weed and start showering, I need a woman who accepts me for me.”

In the slim chance that’s not a troll post, ok there buddy enjoy finding a woman who doesn’t mind BO and the weed addiction you CLEARLY have, I’m sure she’ll be a keeper and not at all unhygienic or an enabler.

“How to lose weight? Dont just tell me to exercise and diet, I know those don’t work.” Mmkay.

It sounds like some people keep getting advice that they have absolutely no intention of following but they’re convinced there’s some secret sauce advice the world is holding back from them.

Look… unless you’re doing Ozempic, diet and exercise are your two choices for losing weight. It’s really that simple.

I collect comics and you see this all the time. “The X-Men run fucking sucks and they just made the books $4.99 up from $3.99, I hate this run and they just signed the creator on for another two years.. no, I’m not cancelling the series, I want a full run.” Ok, quit your moaning then. You hate this series but won’t change your buying habits to reflect that?

Alright! Just enjoy being miserable ya mighty dumb fuck

And just to clarify, I know that some people are seeking more comprehensive advice and they might say something like “please don’t JUST tell me to diet and exercise” and I get that. I’m not talking about that. I’m talking only about people who acknowledge what the likely advice will be and categorically rule it out.

My local library celebrating and remembering an icon

Tim Curry means a lot to me and my family, he was an icon to me and my siblings since we bonded over Scooby-Doo the Witch’s Ghost and later Rocky Horror Picture Show, and I really appreciate that my local library put something up to remember him, and that it’s still up a week later.

People who casually imply they’d commit murder online like they’re some super tough dude

Especially hilarious and ridiculous if they use the phrase “dirt nap” that’s like the ultimate “hmmph, I’m a tough sonbitch n you need to know how tough I is” cringe multiplier.

To be specific, I’m not talking about how you’d react to some travesty or brutal assault. LARP as John McClane all you want then. I’m talking about people who say this shit over things like yelling altercations, Karens, I’ve even seen people see middle school bullying videos and being like “if a kid did that to my son it’s bye-bye time”, things that are shitty, sure, but any normal person knows is something an adult should either walk away from, settle in a court or could just obviously be handled in a non lethal way LIKE A SANE PERSON.

This is insane and it’s important you all understand how insane you seem when you say this. First off, nobody believes for a second you’d follow through on this. You’re clearly lying to seem tough. It’s so easy to watch one of those headphone clipping “pranks” (agree, it’s obnoxious and annoying), but saying shit like “that’s why I practise concealed carry,” dude, what the actual fuck?

The other one is men who talk about how their first time meeting their son in law they intimated some threat while holding a shotgun. Why? You just sound like a threat to the community.

You’re acting like the only thing preventing you from committing murder is that nobody has mildly inconvenienced you today.

1980s neo-noir movies

Specifically the 80s, just because I’ve seen so much from the 70s and 90s but feel like I’m missing out on the 80s noir era.

I have already seen:

Frantic

Witness

Body Heat

No Way Out

The Untouchables

Blow Out

Manhunter

Nighthawks

Blue Velvet

Tightrope

People who refuse to consider scale and relativism when discussing things like money

For instance, I would say it’s reasonable to say that an actor who earned $150,000 on a blockbuster movie “wasn’t that paid that much” in the sense of relative to how much screen time he had to how big of a budget his movie was, it’s safe to say he wasn’t paid that much compared to maybe a costar who had a tenth the screen time but was paid $2 million for two weeks of work.

But if you say that, you’ll have people acting like you’re suggesting that $100,000 is peanuts to the average American, which just obviously isn’t what I’m saying. Or even pulling the “oh I’m supposed to feel sad for the 1% Hollywood actor?” No? It’s literally just perspective people are talking about.

Or if you say a movie was made on a shoestring budget of $10 million, suddenly “oh yeah lol, 10 mil is just chump change 🙄”

Again… no. But relative to how successful this movie is and how much is in it, a $10m budget is pretty small compared to $150mn being the minimum for your average blockbuster. Even some minimalistic comedies have budgets that are at least 2x that.

Or if someone says that, in the grand scheme of things, a few years isn’t that much time in a discussion about macro-level events, and someone goes “not a lot of time to YOU maybe.”

Well no… in a discussion about great events of the last millennium, a few years really isn’t that much time.

When people say this in reference to specific industries or scales, they aren’t dismissing or minimising YOUR PROBLEMS. If I say a bottle of water isn’t that much water in a conversation about the capacity of California’s water reserves, it’s kinda dumb to be like “tell that to someone dying of thirst.”

It’s not clever or witty, it makes you sound less intelligent.

So I guess my story is just getting stolen?

I’m a writer, aspiring comic book writer (I have a single self published floppy and some short stories to my name). About 3 months ago I posted about wanting some work, a guy messages me, I’m invited to a discord with a bunch of other writers and some artists.

Guy isn’t super responsive or reachable, but enough that we can get details, he has concept artwork, and genuinely he’s clearly put some thought into his world and characters (assuming it’s not all AI’d, but then some of the initial concept artwork WAS AI, so who knows)

I felt like we had a decent rapport going at one point, I was even saying I’d be down to commit longer term to working with him.

I submit my script for the story, as do other creators. He even gave my story specifically a shoutout, which made me feel good. One of his collab partners was kind of rude towards me and a bit of a dick, but que sera sera.

And then I make what seems to currently be my big mistake. 2 weeks ago I messaged just saying like “hey, what are you thinking for the payment schedule for these scripts, no rush just curious”

Haven’t heard a word back since. And now I’m starting to think he’s just about to straight up steal everyone’s scripts.

I don’t know if that’s what’s going on, but certainly feels like it.

If you want to run your own publishing business, you can’t be treating people this way. If you can’t afford to do it, don’t waste everyone else’s time like this. I put effort into that script, and had to put up with your friend being kinda disrespectful in the background, and you can’t even get back to me about paying me for what we agreed to?

Movies that offer a window into a very specific time and place

I’ve heard Kevin Smith say that he feels Clerks was kind of a quintessential 1994 movie, and had he released it in 93 or 95 even, he doesn’t think it would have landed as well as in 94.

I’m curious if there are any other movies out there where it’s like this movie speaks to a very, very specific time and place the way Clerks does 1994-era New Jersey.

I feel the same way about American Pie, I think if it had been made in like 1997 or 2002 without the environment it created, it wouldn’t have been as big a success as it was in 1999.

What’s your favourite “I don’t know why it’s funny but it is” throwaway line?

NOT the big iconic moments or the super elaborate jokes. The dumb throwaway lines.

Mine is Peter Griffin on the news called a “self described Huguenot.” I can’t explain it but this is like one of the three funniest lines of the whole show to me. Just even thinking about it made me crack a smile. It’s just so completely random that Peter would identify with a fringe and largely defunct religious sect from France, and just as funny that Tom Tucker has now clue what it means as he reads it.

People who identify their occupation as “entrepreneur”

Bro let’s be honest, you got nothing going on if you can’t even tell me what sector your entrepreneurship is in.

“Entrepreneur” tells me as much as “oh I work salary.” Ok, but I asked what you do, not your pay structure. Like what. Do. You. Do. If you just don’t wanna tell me that’s fine but don’t be out here pretending you’re Howard Hughes just because you’ve made a PowerPoint you hope to show to someone someday to get an investment.
