Looking for Opinions on Phantom Spirit 120 Installation (+ Rant)

EDIT: See my comment for more context.

I've been using the Thermalright PS120 on a 5800X3D for a year or so, and in terms of performance it's all I really need. But I went through a debacle with failing RAM last year, eventually discovering it was caused by a constricted CPU (which eventually died and was RMA'd) under the too-tight cooler. My cooler, since replaced, had the scars to show for it.

What's bothered me ever since is that I don't know how I overtightened it, because everywhere I look I see people recommending to tighten the PS120's screws until they no longer move without force ("snug"), or to tighten them until the springs are fully compressed because "they won't let you overtighten them". I was right in that ballpark. But I actually had RAM die again with the new CPU with the replacement PS120 because, despite reseating it and making sure the screws were only snug, it was STILL too tight. And it had some faint scratches once again. Thankfully that CPU survived, but I had to reseat the cooler once again and try to tighten it down just enough, counting exactly 3 full rotations on each screw. Which was not what I'd call snug, but was enough to keep the cooler sturdy.

It's been 7 months and I've had no further problems, but I want to upgrade some other parts and it's going to require removing that cooler. So, before I do that, I need to hear from other owners about how you tightened your unit; how it's holding up; whether heat sink orientation matters here; and any tips, suggestions, or obvious things I'm missing. I like the performance and want to keep using the PS120, but I need to know for certain what I did wrong the last time(s). Nearly every other part was replaced prior to the cooler to narrow down the initial issue, so I'm confident it's not a different piece of hardware that was causing the issue.

Help Me Optimize the Airflow in My Brother's PC

I just helped my brother build his first PC. He was going to buy a Steam Machine, but after watching reviews he decided he wanted to DIY his own 1080p-focused build for around the same price as the 2TB model. So we took the "equivalent" build suggested by GamersNexus/Paul's Hardware and made some adjustments:

  • AMD Ryzen 5 7600X
  • Thermalright Assassin Spirit 120 EVO
  • ASRock B650M Pro RS
  • Corsair Vengeance 32 GB (2 x 16 GB) DDR5-6000 CL30
  • Crucial P3 2 TB M.2 NVME SSD (I gave him a spare I had in exchange for a cheap HDD he'd bought)
  • ASRock Challenger OC Radeon RX 9060 XT 16 GB
  • Cooler Master MasterBox Q300L MicroATX
  • Thermalright TL-C12C 120mm Fans (x3)
  • MSI MAG A550BN 550 W 80+ Bronze

We put it together over the weekend and he's happy with it, but I'm concerned with the temps after extended use. Via HWINFO the CPU sits at ~50C idle, and a stress test sees it go right up to 95C and stay there. The case has a rear (stock) and top fan for exhaust, two front fans for intake, and the front dust filter currently removed. The results seem standard for these parts and configuration, but if there's a better way to configure the fans he already has, I'd like to hear suggestions. He's mostly interested in old games, but when he inevitably tries newer titles I want him to have a good experience and not have to worry about potential throttling.

Is audio popping in PC applications normal?

I need some help figuring out if this is a system problem or if I'm hallucinating. Frequently, when opening or closing a game, there's a noticeable audio pop or crackle, brief and not too loud. I was playing Portal last night and noticed it would happen when alt-tabbing sometimes, too. Some in-game actions, like when a moving platform reached the end of a laser, also caused it. (That might be a game-specific quirk, but I noticed it at the same time). The opening/closing/alt-tabbing game "pop" was happening in HL2 and Quake, too. I also noticed it in the latter when starting a new game (loading into the hub) and entering a new episode. HL2 had a bunch of popping when first launching the game (but not on subsequent launches), and I noticed consistent popping when specific sounds looped quickly (spamming the gravity gun right-click, running across rooftop surfaces in Ravenholm). Again, could be game-specific, but this was all grabbing my attention at the same time.

This is on a fresh install of W11 with updated drivers, and a new pair of wireless headphones. I've tried reinstalling drivers, changing bitrate in Windows sound settings, switching my wireless dongle to different USB ports, and using different audio devices (another wireless headset and a pair of Bluetooth earbuds). It seems to only happen with games so far.

Could it be a system problem, or is this sort of behavior normal when stopping/starting applications? I've been gaming on PC for 6 years and never noticed it before, and it's making me feel crazy. I have a cheap B550M PRO-VDH that I was considering replacing for other reasons, and I'm wondering if that's the culprit. Any suggestions are much appreciated.

Cloud III S Wireless - R/L Levels Bug

Note: This was all observed and tested while running the device with out-of-the-box settings, no enhancements active in Windows or NGENUITY (no EQ, Surround, etc.), and in 2.4 Ghz mode.

I was messing with R / L levels in Windows sound settings because I thought that the left earphone had suddenly become louder (long story short: it hadn't, I just wasn't used to the sound profile + probably have sinus issues). In doing so I noticed this weird behavior where adjusting a level by one tick, forward or back, and then resetting it to its last position doesn't change the audio. So if I have levels balanced at 30, and I move "Left" 1 tick forward to 31, it raises the left sound accordingly; but then, if I move "Left" back a tick and reset it to 30, the volume on that side doesn't go back down. So I can end up with levels that are balanced according to the numbers, but one side will be louder than the other. If I then move the master volume up or down, it corrects itself so that the sides are audibly balanced again (despite the fact the numbers were already "equal").

As for whether Windows or the headset is the culprit: I pulled out my Cloud III Wireless that this new pair replaced and gave those a try, and the issue wasn't present. I could adjust the levels back and forth with no problems. Double checked firmware, did an complete audio driver reinstall, etc. Didn't fix the III S and its wonky leveling, nor affected the old III Wireless.

So yeah, under normal circumstances it doesn't affect my experience because when it's balanced, it's balanced and doesn't change. But I'm pretty confident that it's a bug with the III S itself, and it could be detrimental to someone who needs to fine-tune levels. Hopefully it's something that can be fixed in a firmware update.

USB Devices Faltering When Connected Beside Each Other

I was copying ~90 GB of files from my PC to a portable SSD, which was plugged into a USB 3.2 Gen 1 port adjacent to my wireless headphones dongle in the rear IO. About halfway through the transfer, my headphones began to disconnect and reconnect - occasionally at first, but then more frequently towards the end of the process. Once the transfer was finished, my headphones remained connected and there were no more issues (both devices remained plugged in next to each other).

In testing I repeated the process, but this time plugged my headphones dongle into the pair of 3.2 ports lower on the IO, so that it was the only connection of that pair (as was the SSD in its group). No disconnects this time, but I did experience a brief audio glitch where the sound warbled for a second. Copied files again, and the audio glitched a couple times and the headphones disconnected/reconnected twice. After the transfer completed, my headphones disconnected/reconnected a couple more times in the span of a few minutes. So different results, but seemingly the same cause.

Other notes:

  • I've experienced the issue in the past, and since then have done a clean install of Windows
  • The motherboard is brand new as of last year, hasn't exhibited any other problems, and its BIOS is up-to-date.
  • There are no issues with any devices when running one in a rear port and the other in a front port.
  • I can have my headphones and mouse dongles side-by-side with no issues.

So, is this a problem with my motherboard, or is it expected behavior when using two USB devices in proximity and one is under heavier load? Any insight appreciated.

Monitor Power Saving Mode Looping Bug(?)

I've been having a persisting issue with drivers post-Adrenalin 26.3.1. In Windows 11, my screen is set to time-out after 5 minutes. When that happens, the monitor will flash a "screen has entered power saving mode" message before turning off, and stay turned off until I shake the mouse or press a button on my keyboard. Since 26.5.1, though, every 3-5 minutes the monitor will "wake" to a black screen that flashes that same message before going to sleep again. It's like something's routinely poking it in the background, causing it to half-wake.

When I first encountered the issue, I tried a few different things: changing my mouse and keyboard settings in Device Manager to not allow them to wake the screen; using a different DisplayPort cable, in case my old one was faulty; double-checking Windows power settings; etc. But eventually I discovered that rolling back to Adrenalin 26.3.1 fixed the problem without any Windows settings or hardware changes. I've tried DDU + clean installs of every major driver release since then, including the latest 26.6.1, and all attempts result in an install with the same quirk. (26.5.2 was also causing crashes when my system went idle, but that at least seemed to be fixed with 26.6.1.)

At this point, it's easy enough to claim the culprits are the drivers themselves; but I want to be sure there isn't something else happening in my system that I could fix simply by altering a setting somewhere. I'm running a W11 Pro image customized with Win11 Creator, which operates under a strict policy that prevents automatic driver updates; and when I use DDU to clean old drivers, I also disable my network adapter to be certain Windows isn't stealth-installing its own drivers and screwing things up. So if there's one culprit I'm fairly confident it's not, it's Windows Update.

Any suggestions are appreciated. I've rolled back to 26.3.1 in the meantime.
