Kid Insisted That I Treat Him Without Insurance And Without Charging Him
I was a therapist in private practice and a college aged kid called me on the telephone and requested an appointment. I asked about his insurance, and he said he didn't want t discuss that it didn't matter to him. He said he'd pay cash if he needed to and would rather not waste time discussing money The day he came in I asked for his insurance card, and he didn't have one. He then said he was insured through his mom's job but she didn't have his card yet. I explained that if he doesn't have an insurance card, he must pay cash--in advance and told him the fee. Suddenly, money was important. He then pulled out his phone and called his mom who just played dumb and asked if it would be OK if her HR faxed over a letter saying that his insurance info would be pending. I told her no, because I need a subscriber ID, group number and employer for the insurance. She kept filibustering, and I eventually hung up on her, and actually had to stand up and demand that this kid (college age) leave my office. People are so entitled and for some reason think they can get free services from therapists because they think we are soft-hearted pushovers.
