Garmin watch vs real heart rate

68, fit female, resting heart rate around 50.

Been doing cardio on with my Garmin and I have concerns re it's accuracy.

Did 15 min on bike, 10 min on stairclimber, 10 and treadmill and the watch showed the HRM off the charts.

Now, I didn't have a problem talking or breathing and I didn't feel my heart beating hard. It also freaks my trainer out on occasion even tho I feel fine.

Anyone else doubt their HRM or have insight?

I've used FitBit and Polar in the past w more accuracy.

Random questions

Not a total noob, year 3.

I have 3 questions. One of our hives is a deep and two mediums. We added the second medium a couple of months ago due to population and heat. I just did an inspection and saw they look great.

Several frames of honey. We have harvested a few frames already and as hobbyists, don't feel the need to take more this year. I figure we'll be taking off one of the mediums as we prep for winter and can consolidate the honey frames for their winter use and freeze the more empty built out comb for next year. We gravity crush the comb for honey so appreciate more.

  1. Notes from class say feed in August. It has been a hot, dry summer in VA but the last several weeks has been rainy and they are bringing in pollen, likely goldenrod. So, should we hold off feeding? I know pollen does not equal nectar but with all of the honey in there, seems unnecessary. For the camp that says they won't take it if they don't need it, they did take an entire jar in just a few days.

  2. Also, some say don't feed as it ruins the honey yet the same people feed syrup in fall. Does that sugar water magically convert to honey over winter so if it doesn't get eaten, it just becomes part of your spring harvest?

  3. We slayed our queen in last fall's mite wash. This hive has an unmarked queen and I suck at spotting her. Any way I can make sure this doesn't happen again..aside from marking the queen? Not confident about marking her.

Thanks, you guys continue to be a ln excellent source of knowledge.

I am tired of making all of the decisions

Anyone else the bus driver in your relationship?

We have been together 31 years and it has come to the point where I am exhausted. It is alot of responsibility to decide everything from where we go on vacation (and making all the plans) to deciding what we have for dinner. My spouse has a high level mgmt job where there are all kinds of projects to plan and people to delegate. It's not like they can't make decisions.

I am reading that decision burnout is a thing.

Tightness and discomfort behind leg.

I had a 50% meniscus trim at end of March. I also snapped off my ACL and at 67, opted to not repair.

I am doing well and last week did a 7 mile hike so happy w that. I am working out at the gym to strengthen everything around my knee.

Perhaps 4 months is still considered recovery time? My knee rarely hurts and if it does, it's usually a random stabbing pain than doesn't last.

What is more chronic is a tightness in my calf, especially just below the back of my knee. Not a bakers cycst. I also have a pretty tight hamstring. I do stretch but maybe I need to do more? Also, getting accupuncture for this. I wouldn't say it's pain, just a general discomfort. Or maybe this is just my new normal. Anyone else?

Establishing FL domicile

Heading out of the US next year and contemplating FL for domicile.

I have been reading about companies that will provide an address for registering as a resident. My mother in law has a condo where she is just a few months out of the year.

We are selling our cars but would get drivers licenses in FL.

Can we just have my spouse's mom draft a bogus lease for us for residency proof and then pay one of the services for mail forwarding? Not sure what the difference is?

Meniscectomy and doing well

I posted here months ago and wanted to loop back with some positivity.

Totally tore my ACL and bucket handle tear on my meniscus that flipped and locked my knee at 14° in November. Misdiagnosed by a doc who refused an MRI and did a month of PT. I knew something more was happening so went to another doc who did an MRI and said my knee would never be straight without surgery.

I am an avid hiker. I have trekked the Alps, Andes, Rockies and Himalayas. I was depressed for months dealing with this but, hey, at least it was winter.

At 67, doc said a lot of seniors get by without an ACL. I heard 9-12 months recovery and said, fine, let's try to repair the meniscus. He said repair recovery would be as long as the ACL recovery so we opted to trim it. 50%. After surgery, he said it couldn't have been repaired anyway. Those who say never trim, well, that's not always an option.

So, here I am. I had surgery at the end of March. I interviewed my PT doc before surgery to make sure I had the right guy. I did my exercises religiously. I joined a gym so I have access to equipment. I hiked 6 miles a few weeks ago with 1000' gain. I started working out with a trainer this week as I prepare for an extended trip next month. I'm trying to lose 10 pounds to reduce stress on the joints.

I feel fortunate to have made a quick recovery. I have more issues with my muscles being tight than I do any knee pain. Will I need a knee replacement? Maybe. I'm doing all I can to keep my muscles strong around it. And as I have been told, any kind of trauma can lead to a replacement and it's not going to slow me down worrying about it.

Stay positive and do the work. And speedy recovery to you.

San Miguel de Allende Population

We are researching and hoping to head down here to scope it out this winter. Some posts say it is a small town, yet the population is posted as 200k+ and photos make it look like a large enough city. Are the small town complainers not stepping out of the old city, I assume the entire area has things to do. Enlighten me. 😀

Brood breaks and mite treatments

So, we had a couple of months with no queen, so, yay, brood break. Now we have a queen cranking, so, yay, again. She entered the hive on May 28. Now is the time of year, as I understand, the population declines and the mites increase.

My question is, how long after a brood break does one need to test for mites?

- And how often do you test if the mite count is low?

Thanks

Bees!!

I'm at my wits end. I have 3 feeders and the honeybees are all over them. It has been wickedly hot which means there probably is little to no nectar out there..

I had 1 beeproof feeder and they're still all over it. I bought 2 more different styles and hung them today and bam, bees! I have started putting the smallest amount of sugar water in so there is no spillage and so the bees can't reach. I also got one of the tray type and the bees were all over it, sticking their heads in the holes even though they can't reach the water.

Any advice? Hummers are coming around in the AM and PM when bees are gone but it's a small window. Thanks.

Time to feed?

So the weather in Central VA has been crazy w spring freeze and now severe drought. We just did an inspection and there is a lot of honey in the top two boxes but none in the bottom box. We don't use a queen excluder and almost all of the brood is in the bottom.

I read on another post that no nectar around the brood = time to feed. Usually July and August are dearthy here and we do feed them. Other forums report late tree blooms in VA but I question the flow here because they are also washboarding. It's going to be in the 100s end of this week so probably everything will crash and burn in the nectar department.

That said, we have already taken a few frames this year and there are a few about 80-85% capped. Will feeding sugar water at this point really make that big of an impact on these frames assuming they will eventually get capped out by fall?

Hiking poles?

Is there a place I can obtain hiking poles for my short stay? I travel only with carryon so not allowed to take them on the plane. Will only be there a week so don't want to sink a ton into them. Is there a used sporting goods store around or something like that?

FEHB without Medicare

I am 67 and on my spouse's Federal Employee Health Benefits. We have a somewhat high deductible and it costs me $380/ month. I declined Medicare Part 2 for the time being when I turned 65.

She is retiring in about a year and a half and if our plans go thru, we are leaving the US for at least a few years, or maybe indefinitely. We will return to the US a few times a year and probably have some of the routine annual dr vsits while visiting family.

Clearly, we will need travel insurance, and we will keep paying FEHB premiums. I am questioning whether I want to go on Medicare if her insurance is good. It seems like more $$$ when we won't be around much. And there is a chance I have to pay IRRMA, also. Anyone else just doing FEHB with no Medicare?

Deck painting fubar

Hired painter to do deck. The previous owner hired this company and they did a stellar job on the house. Guy said they fixed woodpecker holes, you'd never know. So we've been living in the best endorsement. Plus they have only 5 star reviews.

Previous owner used paint on deck vs stain. Boo. Painter put down Sherwin Williams Porch and Patio enamel in 95 degree heat and wrinkles everywhere. After seeing that, they said it dried too fast. Duh. They sanded it down and said in some places, the wood is wet because of lack of air circulation under the deck and had a moisture reader to show me this. Ok. They were going to put primer down but their paint rep said no, let it breathe. So, after sanding the deck, they painted it again in 85 degree weather and we have wrinkles AGAIN. However, some are on 2nd level where there is a lot of circulation as well as handrails.

Is the deck the problem or do the painters not know what they're doing? He says he's never seen this happen before and is bringing the SW rep over tomorrow. I am so over this. I have read that paint is tricky in small claims court. I told my spouse, lets just be done with it, demand a decrease in price, and pay someone else when it chips all over to sand and repaint.

What is the best path forward?

When to feed bees?

I am in the Virginia drought currently happening. I read some people are already feeding their bees, hoping for better luck w fall harvest. I have several frames that are like 80% capped so figure they have reserves but if there isn't and hasn't been any nectar is it better to just start feeding now vs next month when the dearth usually starts? How do you know when to feed them?

10 weeks post meniscectomy

I'm doing great after about 50% removal due to a bucket handle tear at end of March. Yesterday, however, is the first time I've hiked up a steep grade and that seems to be the remaining pain point for me. Needley pain that stopped when I got to the top, no swelling or pain later. Still doing lots of PT and strength work at the gym. Just need more time? Big adventures coming at end of August and hoping it's done by then but have tentative cortisone shot appt w doc before I go.

Better option in Europe

Just joined Tello. I saw a lot of nomads use it because they can keep their US# for 2FA.

I am heading to Denmark/Faro/Italy/Czech Republic and Germany this summer and am wondering if it's better to get Pay As You Go or just another eSim for Europe since my phone has space for 2 eSims? Still figuring the PAYG option and not sure how to manage dual eSIMs....thx.
