Navier should have been afraid of Rashta...
The big thing that Navier feels when she finds out that Sovieshu intends to divorce her, in favour of Rashta, is an identity crisis. Having spent her entire life training, preparing and tying her identity into being the Empress, the idea of living a life without that power, responsibility and identity paralyses her and acts as huge contributing factor to her immediately throwing herself into a marriage with Heinrey.
That's not enough, for me. I think there should have been more.
It's a good element to her character, and I wouldn't do without it, but I think there should have been a more immediate and pressing reason for Navier to both reach for the power and protection of a throne AND to flee the country...
Rashta.
I wholeheartedly think that the story should have made Rashta and Navier independently realise that their positions of power and authority were about to drastically change, and both should have had very significant emotional reactions.
Rashta (by this point in the story) truly hates Navier. She thinks this woman is actively out to undermine and harm her and her child.
Navier is a threat.
So, with Navier about to be removed from the imperial household and Rashta taking her place as Empress, Rashta should at least acknowledge that she has just been given the power to both get her revenge on Navier AND ensure she can never harm her or Glorym ever again...
Meanwhile, Navier should acknowledge just who is getting the throne once she is removed from it. Though she is a member of the Trovi family (and it would be an incredibly stupid thing to target such a powerful noble household), Rashta is a vengeful idiot who would have no issue publicly harming or humiliating her and her family for all these months of perceived slights and harm. Then, with how Sovieshu has both thoroughly defended her AND is actively throwing Navier away, Navier should also be worried that Sovieshu isn't going to be especially inclined to rein her in.
Navier should be terrified of what this crazy woman, emboldened with the power and authority of the crown, will do to her and her family if given the opportunity (just like when she talks about issues with her raising Glorym when Sovieshu is at her wedding). Which, as a result, fuels Navier's urgency for a remarriage to Heinrey.
Her marriage to Heinrey (which is one of convenience in the immediate term) is both a protection of her ego and identity AND cements a particular level of protection for herself and her family. Navier physically moving to another nation takes her out of Rashta's range, whilst Navier now being a rival monarch makes harming her family a potential declaration of war and requires Sovieshu to monitor anything Rashta might try to do to them.
This added layer of reasoning deepens the story significantly:
- It gives Navier's urgency (and her fear during the divorce) further weight, as there are real life-threatening consequences to her failure.
- It acknowledges potential political ramifications of a divorce of this nature.
- It makes Navier seem less shallow.
- It shows Heinrey as someone who wants to save Navier.
- It deepens the villainous edge on Rashta.
- It further deepens Sovieshu's feelings of stupidity when he realises what not communicating his plan to Navier made her think.
Its good shit all around!
Tl//dr: Navier should be rushing to marry Heinrey SO Rashta can't just abuse the power of the throne to get revenge on her and her family.
