Newly diagnosed 4 year old
My 4-year-old son was officially diagnosed with ADHD today, and while the diagnosis wasn’t a surprise, it’s still a lot to process. We’re feeling hopeful because it gives us a better understanding of him and a path forward, but I’d love to learn from parents who have been where we are.
A little about him:
Extremely verbal and incredibly social (especially with adults).
Endless energy—he genuinely seems like he never stops moving.
Big imagination and loves pretend play.
Kind, affectionate, and generally shares well.
Curious about everything.
His biggest challenges are:
Impulse control.
Emotional regulation and frustration tolerance.
Sensory seeking (constantly climbing, crashing, jumping, seeking movement).
Difficulty sustaining attention during tasks that don’t interest him.
He often knows the answer but daydreams or gives an off-topic response when asked a question.
He tends to feed off the energy of other active kids.
Over the past two years we’ve tried to be very proactive. He has an IEP through the public schools and receives occupational therapy and special education support. We’ve implemented sensory strategies, heavy work, visual schedules, timers, movement breaks, noise-canceling headphones when needed, and we use a lot of Daniel Tiger songs and scripts to help with emotional regulation. We’re also scheduled for a comprehensive private neuropsychological evaluation this fall.
At this point, I’m less interested in “how to get a diagnosis” and more interested in what actually made a meaningful difference after your child was diagnosed.
Some questions:
What books changed the way you parent?
Any podcasts, websites, or YouTube channels you found especially helpful?
Were there therapies or parent training programs that were worth it?
What routines or accommodations made the biggest difference at home?
Looking back, what do you wish you’d started sooner?
Is there anything you wish someone had told you right after your child’s diagnosis?
Thanks in advance. I really appreciate any advice from parents who’ve walked this road.

Dumpling Recommendations in Manhattan needed thanks
I have a friend visiting NYC who wants to go get dumplings. Looking for your absolute favorite spot for dumplings in Manhattan. Ideally a sit down spot not just an order and sit. Bonus if they take reservations
Flu Shot
I accidentally forgot to get my son a flu shot in the fall and now camp says DOH says he needs one. I can’t find one anywhere! They all say I have to wait till flu season. Where can I find it now?
Anyone work for DOHMH?

ELEMENTARY SCHOOL REZONING
NYC Public Schools’ Office of District Planning will host a virtual Community Conversation on May 20 at 6:30 PM about possible school rezoning changes in LIC.
This may include future zoning changes for:

Potty Training
We were told that our DOE Public pre-k center will not wipe students in pre-k. Obviously we are working on this skill but our child hasn’t mastered it yet. Given that you don’t need to be potty trained for pre-k I’d expect they encourage students to wipe themselves and assist as needed to ensure they are clean. But guess not. Can someone clarify?
