Severe thunderstorm- travel advisory … remote work?

NYCEM just issued a travel advisory… anyone’s agency offering remote work yet? Will they? I can’t imagine the MTA system to be able to handle this with the heaviest rain expected between 4am and 10am, during rush hour.

“NYCEM has issued a travel advisory from 7/5-7/7, NYers are advised to prepare for potential rain & thunderstorms overnight Sun-Tues morning.

NWS has forecast 2-3 inches of rainfall across the city through Tuesday morning, with isolated regions receiving up to 4.5 inches. Brief rainfall rates of 1.5-2.5 inches per hour are possible in stronger thunderstorms, which can lead to potentially widespread flash flooding, with low-lying and poor drainage areas at the highest risk.

Heavy rain may cause flooding, including highways, streets, basements, & underpasses. During periods of heavy rain, seek higher ground or if in a basement move to a higher floor.

Heavy rain may create dangerous travel conditions:

NYers are advised to limit travel and stay inside during periods of severe weather.

If traveling, exercise caution. Do not drive your vehicle or walk into areas where water covers the roadway”

Probation Officer Trainee

I recently applied & received an email to start the hiring process. I was curious about uniform requirements during the academy. Do you wear a uniform or are you in business attire everyday?

NY HELPS  – No Examinations Required

New York State agencies are hiring for thousands of critical positions open across the state. To help agencies fill these positions, the Department of CS developed the NY Hiring for Emergency Limited Placement Statewide (NY HELPS) Program. This program streamlines the appointment process to allow State agencies to hire diverse, qualified permanent employees quickly and without examinations. New State employees hired under the NY HELPS Program will be appointed on a permanent basis. To be eligible for NY HELPS jobs, candidates must meet the jobs’ minimum qualifications and any other conditions of employment.

To view open jobs, please visit State Jobs.

To narrow your search for NY HELPS jobs, click on “Jobs Open to the Public.” Select "YES" in the NY HELPS field. Press submit. This will bring up all of the NY HELPS jobs that are available. Once you find the job in which you are interested and qualified, review the entire job posting. Directions to apply will be specified on each individual job posting.

All Exam Fees Waived! Please note that CS exam application fees are now waived for all New York State civil service exams through December 2027.

Associate Staff Analyst List - Exam 5041

Hi, I passed the ASA test and on the list. My number is pretty high but still less than 1,000. I'm a little confused about what happens now. I've been getting conflicting information, even from my supervisor about next steps and whether or not I can get certified in this title. To my understanding, if I am called to a hiring pool and offered the position, I can take it back to my agency and they will match the salary (while keeping me at my current position)? I was told they can't do that because my current salary range does not match the ASA range. Please let me know what the process is once a person is on the list.

Only asking here because I have received different information from various individuals.

Thanks!

Possible to get fired from agency "out of nowhere?"

I know someone who worked at a city agency as an attorney. Not sure how long they worked there for, but definitely more than two years (which I believe means they wouldn't be probationary?) They were fired earlier this year for "performance issues" and they said it basically came out of nowhere. Like they could tell they were struggling a bit but didn't have a formal conversation with their boss about poor performance and wasn't put on a performance plan.

I feel like I might not be getting the full story from them because it seems like this shouldn't be possible (unless they were still probationary). Just based on searching through posts on this forum.

Tomorrow's Heat

Is anyone else looking forward to the simultaneous "avoid all unnecessary travel" and "all employees are required to report to their workstations as scheduled" messages tomorrow?

NYC Employee Tix 4th of July

Similar to the Knicks Parade, just wondering if we should expect an email or link for lottery tickets to watch the fireworks on the 4th of July. (For city employees. I know the 10k tickets is already happening)

The DC37 Rank and File Contract Campaign can be found on Instagram!

Hey all,

Our grassroots campaign is trying to push for a livable contract for DC37 workers that keeps up with both inflation and the surging cost of housing in this city. We've created an Instagram account to keep people informed about where the campaign stands and how they can plug in.

Please follow here: https://www.instagram.com/servenycaffordnyc/

VDC program

I onboarded a few months ago and found out recently that I missed an opportunity (30 day window) to sign up for the VDC program where managers (non-union) can sign up to receive up to 8% state/city matching contribution into an investment program.

https://www.tiaa.org/public/ms/nyvdc/employee-city

This benefit was not communicated anywhere during my onboarding process and I'm feeling very short changed. HR is no help here either.

You're not eligible if you're part of the NYCERS pension program.

My agency installed air hand dryers

They didn't ask for our input on the matter.

Then they are not filling the paper towels and they have a note on the dispenser that it will be loaded if and when the hand dryer machine is not working.

Every time the air dryer is used, the air flows in the bathroom and I feel it coming from under the bathroom elevated walls and door. Just moving germs and bacteria that was settled into my face while I use the toilet..a breeze of disgusting tiny weeny fecal matter.

Today, after I put the paper seat cover, of course the stall door was closed, someone outside used the air dryer and it flew into the inside of the toilet. I was half way into sitting but the toilet cover from the breeze flew into inside the toilet.

Moreover, Electric hand dryers pull in the surrounding bathroom air and blast it out at high speeds. Because of this, they can circulate those settled germs and fecal particles from the room and blow them onto your freshly washed hands.

This affects our health. They want work from the office. The building wants the big contracts from paid for from our taxes, the least they can do is not make the bathroom more of a germ breeding ground than it is already.

Even having to touch the bathroom door is an issue. Are we supposed to bring bathroom supplies from home now?

And they are doing this after COVID!

EDIT: FYI Bacteria and viruses settle on restroom floors and surfaces, largely from "toilet plumes" (aerosolized waste when toilets flush). Air dryers intake surrounding room air, sucking up microbes from the air, floors, and surfaces, and blasting it into the air, providing circulation for the tiny fecal matter and germs.

You passed the NYS civil service exam. Now what?

You passed the NYS Civil Service exam. So what happens now?

The next steps are not obvious, and nobody explains the whole process in one place.

So we put together a single page that walks through the whole process, in plain language, and answers the questions that come up most after the exam. It covers:

  • What your score actually means for getting called (a 78 and a 95 are very different spots)
  • The rule of three, with a worked example of who is reachable and who is not
  • Canvass letters, and what happens if you miss one
  • Why a list stalls even when you are near the top (list blockers, preferred lists, geography, selective certification, veterans credits)
  • How long a list lasts, and when a new exam is required
  • A full flowchart and a dictionary of every term

There is also a FAQ at the bottom for the specific questions that come up most here, like "someone below me got the job, how?" and "why is my list frozen?"

It is free, no cost, no signup, and every section is backed by the state's own guidance with links to cs.ny.gov. Hope it saves some people the runaround.

Can someone explain why we have only 3 weeks PTO?

It is pretty low compared to the private sector in my field, IT.

Why so low?!

It is not enough ....at all.

And we have a union...those in the private sector usually don't.

ACS hiring pool

ACS had sent me 4th hiring pool email this morning.. I don’t know what to do at this point, since I went to the first two hiring pools, and filled out declination form for the third hiring pool and requested my first restoration for paralegal aide title.

I don’t want to go but at same time I don’t want to respond to the email.. I don’t want to wait for another few years to retake the exam again. what will happen if I don’t respond the email and not showing up? Will DCAS make me to fill out second restoration?

Any insights on that?

DC37 dental?

Any suggestions for a dentist that takes DC37 Delta Dental and is not terrible? Multiple dentists listed as taking the insurance on the website do not, in fact, take the insurance. I live in downtown Manhattan, but will travel to JMZ/F train accessible dentists in Brooklyn if they're worth it.

Agencies that limit when you can take vacation?

Is this normal/allowed?

There are two month long periods in the summer where we are "highly discourage" (not exactly sure what this means) to take vacation and if we must its limited to five days. Is this allowed?

I have a family vacation that I need 6 days off during this time period and Im wondering what my recourse is if they deny me.

For context this isnt like, a life or death kind or job. It is mildly more busy but not so much that someone else cant fill in for me. I also know no one else has requested off during that time period so theyd only be down one person.

City Worker struggling- advice pls

Hey guys!
I’ve been debating whether to post here or not. I feel so embarrassed lol. I work for the nyc city morgue. Our salary is definitely not the best at all. I feel embarrassed when I ask to view places and they ask for my income /: but I still try. My credit is great. I can and do have someone who would be my guarantor. I’ve applied to NYCHA, HPD re rentals as well, and housing connect. StreetEasy has some decent priced apartments but gone so quick. I would move in with my bf but we are in a tough spot right now, and I kinda wanna be independent. However, that’s not looking like it’s possible. I’ll be honest, I make $46k. Trash for nyc. I check Craigslist, Facebook, StreetEasy, Zillow, and word of mouth really. I have a steady job. If I do OT my check is pretty good for two weeks. I have good savings as well. But I’m just at a loss. I feel discouraged. I live with my bf and his family. Basically in a cramped apartment with no space for my things at all and live in a suitcase for my job. If anyone knows of anything, I would really appreciate it. A studio is perfectly fine. In queens, Brooklyn, I’ll even take the Bronx even though the commute will be tough to my queens job. I’ve rented during grad school with no job. Had a roommate who was pretty bad. Terrible experience but I guess open to it too. Budget is about 1500-1600 is the most /: any words of encouragement, advice, brokers, I’ll take anything! Help a girl out. Thank you 🫶🏼
