Been 503ing for a few hours now... is this just me? I'm not sure exactly what this even means.
Songs by different artists written about the same person?
This is specifically for songs written about a person the songwriter actual knew, not for something like “Betrayed” by Avenged Sevenfold and “Side of a Bullet” by Nickleback, both written about the murder of Dimebag Darrell.
Alex Greenwald (Phantom Planet) and Ryan Ross performing “I Don’t Mind” 2008 vs 2018 (lore in post body)
Phantom Planet signed on to Fueled By Ramen in 2007. The Honda Civic Tour in 2008 had Panic at the Disco headlining with a bunch of other FBR bands, including Phantom Planet; Panic promoting ‘Pretty. Odd.’, and Phantom Planet promoting ‘Raise The Dead’. The two bands spent a good amount of time together while on tour, and specifically Alex Greenwald and Ryan formed a bond. Ryan frequently played guitar on “Do The Panic” during Phantom Planet’s set. After the shows finished, Phantom Planet would do little acoustic performances for their fans, and Ryan would often attend.
By the time the Panic split had happened Phantom Planet was also on hiatus. When Ryan and Jon formed the Young Veins they had Alex produce and play guitar on the album. The album’s final song, “Heart of Mine”, has Alex’s voice very audible during the chants. During the post-song conversations you can also hear him talking with Ryan and Z Berg. Ryan would, of course, perform a ton with Z Berg over the following years.
The second performance was just over ten years later at a Z Berg + Friends show. Alex and Ryan played “I Don’t Mind”, the final song on ‘Raise The Dead’, as well as one of Ryan’s songs, “Lonely Moonglight”. Phantom Planet reformed just a few months later, and Ryan has made guest appearances at various shows. Most notably he joined the band for a performance of “Do The Panic” last year… with Dallon fucking Weekes! That marked the first time they ever appeared together in public, and possibly the first time they met?
The Brobecks opened for Phantom Planet sometime in the mid 2000s, and they hit it off. Darren from Phantom Planet actually recommended Dallon to the people at FBR as a replacement for Jon after Panic split. IDKHOW and Phantom Planet did a tour last year too. Basically, Phantom Planet were friends with Ryan and Dallon separately and the stars aligned for those two to meet at one of the band’s shows.
Songs with left and right hand interplay on the piano like these?
All these songs have eighth note chords with the right hand (higher notes) with the left hand playing both on beat and off beat. I’m looking for more pop songs like this.
Cool album art with crazy backstories? (Pictured: Phantom Planet’s self titled album, 2004)
The art for this album was created by a friend of the band, Rob Bronco. He got into some sort of accident (it may have been a car crash- i don’t remember) and suffered from amnesia afterwards. His family gave him a laptop on which he created this art using MS Paint… at a grueling pace of one pixel at a time. The band decided to leave the album untitled in order to not obscure Rob’s art. In the album’s booklet there is a similar art piece that Rob later painted onto frontman Alex Greenwald’s wall. Alex apparently still owns that chunk of wall even after moving out.
Matt Rose discord?
There was an official Matt Rose discord but I can’t find a link for it. Anyone have it?
This video has me humming the chorus melody. I want to add this to my work playlist but can’t remember the title or words. https://www.reddit.com/r/sandboxtest/s/K0HVpyoABG
I’m mainly a bass player and have never had this issue when i play bass. I’m trying to get better at guitar but for anything other than playing on one or two strings I always go to this crappy posture which hurts my wrists. It allows for me to hit more notes at the cost of being super uncomfortable.
Picture 1 is how I feel it should be, and picture 2 is how I usually end up playing.
This is coming only 9 months after their last album, ‘Love Is Like’. That album was a real step up from their past few and even got back to Adam being the main songwriter (Sam Farrar and James Valentine also received co-writing credits). It actually sounded like a band again. I talked to Sam back in December and he’s very proud of it, and both Adam and James were super excited for it to release.
Unfortunately it wasn’t much of a success. It didn’t chart high and only one of its singles had any real impact- “Priceless” (with Lisa), which only charted at 76 on the Hot 100 and 69 in the UK. The band won’t even play it live because Adam doesn’t want to do it without Lisa.
It seems Adam is pushing the band back into the direction of having songs written for the band again. What’s worse is Adam, Sam and James are the only members even on the song! Jesse, PJ and Matt are nowhere to be seen.
This (as of yet untitled) track is produced by John Ryan, who produced and/or co-wrote 8 songs from their album ‘Red Pill Blues’, including “Don’t Wanna Know”, “Cold” and “Wait”; he also co-wrote “Cigarettes” alongside Ryan Tedder for M5’s most recent album ‘Love Is Like’- that track was the only song from the record that wasnt recorded during the main album sessions and the only one that was handed to the band mostly finished.
John Ryan is best known for “Fireball” by Pitbull (2014), on which he features on, “Story of My Life” and “Drag Me Down” by One Direction, “Feather”, “Taste”, “Bed Chem”, “Juno” and “When Did You Get Hot?” by Sabrina Carpenter, “Bad Dreams” by Teddy Swims, “Wiggle” by Jason Derulo, “Slow Hands” by Niall Horan, and the aforementioned Maroon 5 singles “Don’t Wanna Know”, “Cold” and “Wait”.
He is the main songwriter and producer (and one of two vocal producers) on the new Maroon 5 song. He also plays drums, keys, organ and synth, did the programming, and sings backing vocals.
It’s very clear to me that Adam, Sam and James quickly recorded this song so that they’d have something new to play for the tour they’re going on this summer- and to sweep ‘Love Is Like’ under the rug. I loved the album, but Maroon 5 are on the outs. I hope they can accept that.
