Nobody knows exactly where that copy of Sonic CD came from.

The player who found it never revealed their name either.

It was just an ordinary copy of the game.

Or, at least, it was supposed to be.

The only strange detail was something written in pen on the disc case:

A BROKEN HEART

At first, it seemed like a joke.

The game started normally.

Title screen. Sonic running. Familiar music.

PALMTREE PANIC

Everything seemed perfectly normal.

Until Amy appeared.

Just like in the original game, she was waiting for Sonic near the end of the act, surrounded by little hearts. When Sonic approached her from the correct side, she tried to hug him.

The player simply jumped over her.

Nothing unusual.

Sonic kept running.

The Act sign appeared.

But before the screen changed...

Amy was there.

Standing behind the sign.

She watched Sonic disappear into the distance.

The player stopped.

Amy didn't move.

The hearts around her disappeared one by one.

Her smile disappeared.

Then her expression changed.

First confusion.

Then frustration.

Then something much darker.

It was as if, in that moment, Amy had finally stopped pretending.

She lowered her head slightly.

She thought.

Then she raised her eyes directly toward the camera.

A small crack echoed.

Her hammer appeared in her hand.

The screen flickered.

I DON'T THINK YOU'VE EVER CARED FOR ME.

Another flicker.

YOU'VE JUST IGNORED ME AT MY WORST WHILE I WAS WAITING FOR YOUR VALIDATION.

The image went black for a fraction of a second.

THE LINES HAVE BEEN CROSSED...

Amy looked at the screen again.

And the game returned to Sonic.

As if nothing had happened.

The next section was supposed to show Amy again.

But she wasn't there.

Sonic passed through the place where she was supposed to appear.

Nothing.

The player continued.

Stardust Speedway.

Metal Sonic appeared normally.

The chase happened.

The battle ended.

Sonic won.

But there was a problem.

Amy was supposed to be waiting at the end.

She wasn't there.

The camera remained still for several seconds.

No music.

No movement.

Then Sonic continued.

A passage that didn't exist in Sonic CD appeared.

The scenery began to change.

Sonic descended.

Deeper.

Until he found the first Badniks.

Destroyed.

It didn't look like they had simply been defeated.

It looked like someone had gone through them with completely unnecessary fury.

Further down, even some small Flickies were lying motionless on the ground.

The player stopped.

The music had disappeared.

There was only the sound of Sonic's footsteps.

Then a wall appeared.

Written across it was a dark message:

WHY DID YOU NEVER LOVE ME?

Further ahead:

YOU STAY THERE WHILE I SUFFER BECAUSE OF YOU.

And finally:

DO I HAVE TO KILL JUST FOR YOU TO NOTICE ME?

Sonic continued.

Until he reached an underground area.

Below him was a huge pool of lava.

And on the other side...

Amy.

Standing still.

Her hammer lowered.

Completely motionless.

She raised her head.

— Ah, Sonic. There you are.

Sonic stopped.

— Running around, I presume...

Amy tightened her grip on the hammer.

— Tell me... do you know what it's like to be rejected so many times by the one you love?

Silence.

— To suffer from unrequited love?

Amy gave a bitter smile.

— No.

She raised her eyes.

— You DON'T know what it's like to go through that.

The hammer rose.

— And THIS PAIN...

A pause.

— WILL BE RETURNED.

Sonic took a step.

Amy attacked.

The blow immediately forced Sonic backward.

The player tried to move him.

Sonic remained still for a moment.

He hadn't expected that.

Amy spoke again:

— What's the matter, Sonic?

She raised the hammer again.

— YOU THOUGHT DOCTOR WORKED ALONE?

The music began.

But it was completely distorted.

And the battle started.

1. DENIAL

The controls began to malfunction.

The player pressed one direction.

Sonic moved in another.

Sometimes, he simply stopped.

Sometimes, he tried to run away.

And at one point, Sonic began walking on his own toward the opposite side of Amy.

The player tried to make him turn back.

Nothing.

It was as if Sonic himself didn't want to fight.

A message appeared:

WHY ARE YOU STILL RUNNING?

Another:

HOW COULD YOU NOT NOTICE?

Sonic tried to escape again.

The player insisted.

Finally, they managed to make him turn back.

Amy was waiting.

— Don't run from me.

Sonic stood before her.

The fight continued.

2. BARGAINING

Suddenly, the controls worked again.

Sonic didn't attack.

He simply stood there.

Then small messages began appearing.

We can fix this.

Amy answered:

NO.

Listen to me...

YOU'VE ALREADY SAID ENOUGH.

Amy, please...

She raised her hammer.

DON'T TRY TO INSIST.

Pause.

YOU'VE ALREADY DESTROYED EVERYTHING WE HAD.

Sonic kept trying to approach without attacking.

Amy didn't back down.

The game seemed to be waiting for the player to understand:

There was nothing left to say.

3. DEPRESSION

The music became slower and slower.

Sonic began losing ground.

His movements became heavy.

The controls started responding poorly again.

Amy attacked.

Sonic barely reacted.

The player tried to make him run.

Jump.

Fight back.

But nothing seemed to work properly.

And there was something even stranger.

Even without a single ring...

Sonic remained alive.

The game simply wouldn't let him die.

It was as if the level itself was keeping him there.

As punishment.

A message appeared:

HOW CAN YOU NOT NOTICE?

Another:

HOW DID YOU LET IT GET THIS FAR?

Amy landed another blow.

LIAR.

Another.

LIAR.

And then:

YOU COULD HAVE SEEN ME.

Sonic fell to his knees for a moment.

The screen became almost completely dark.

HOW DID YOU BECOME SO POWERLESS?

For several seconds, Sonic simply didn't react.

Then his expression changed.

4. ANGER

The controls returned.

Completely.

Sonic stood up.

Amy charged.

This time, Sonic attacked.

The first hit was fast.

The second, even faster.

The battle changed completely.

There was no more attempt to escape.

No more attempt to talk.

Sonic understood.

Nothing he said would bring it back.

Amy had crossed a line.

And now...

he was furious too.

The battle became even.

Amy screamed.

Sonic charged forward.

For a few moments, the two seemed completely unable to stop.

Until Amy backed away.

Sonic prepared a Spin Dash.

Amy raised her hammer.

— YOU MUST DIE NOW!

Sonic launched forward.

The impact knocked Amy backward.

She lost her balance and fell, disappearing into the lava below.

The music stopped immediately.

Sonic stood completely still.

5. ACCEPTANCE

Nothing happened.

Sonic simply stared.

The camera remained focused on him.

No counter.

No enemies.

No music.

Only silence.

Then small hearts began appearing around him.

Exactly like the ones that had surrounded Amy.

But something was different.

They were broken.

One by one, the hearts disappeared.

Sonic lowered his head.

He didn't look victorious.

He looked devastated.

He had won.

But he hadn't gained anything at all.

Sonic looked directly at the camera.

For a few seconds, it seemed like he wanted to say something.

He didn't.

He turned around.

And began walking away.

Slowly.

Much slower than Sonic normally would.

The screen began fading to black.

Then one final message appeared:

THE HEDGEHOG HAD HIS HEART BROKEN...

Pause.

AND ONLY NOW REALIZED IT.

The screen went black.

End.

...

For a single instant, before the game returned to the title screen, another message appeared.

In tiny letters.

Almost hidden.

I HATE YOU...

The screen flickered.

I HATE YOU SO MUCH.

And then:

SEGA CD™

As if nothing had ever happened.
