[Question] Tried Rolex, Omega, Tudor, IWC and Longines today. Rolex was by far the strangest experience
My wife and I went to a mall today that has Rolex, Tudor, Omega and IWC, and we also stopped by Macy’s to try some Longines watches. We went mainly because I recently got promoted at work so we wanted to celebrate by getting a real luxury watch.
I’ve already did a lot of research and watched so many videos YouTube videos to educate myself on the design and sizes of the watches I'm interested in.
The Rolex experience was easily the most surprising. It was a Rolex-only store, not an AD.
I walked in wearing a Black Bay 58 homage. They actually seemed to think it was a Tudor, which was funny, but nobody made a big deal about it.
I asked to try a blue dial Datejust 36 since it is a great GADA watch. The salesperson was friendly, offered us drinks, brought the watch over, and I tried it on.
My wife immediately said, “That’s too small. I don’t like it.”
So I asked to try a black Submariner.
She immediately liked the Sub much more, and I agreed that the size looked better. I told the salesperson that this was basically Rolex’s ultimate watch and asked if they had one I could buy.
No.
He said they could take my information and call me when one became available.
So I started asking about other \~40 mm Rolexes.
“No-date Sub?”
Same answer.
“GMT?”
Same answer.
“Daytona?”
Same answer.
“Blue Datejust 41?”
Same answer.
At that point I literally asked, “So any watch I want to buy, I have to be on a waiting list?”
He explained that they take your information and call you if the watch becomes available.
(If not when)
I said, “I see. Thank you for your time,” put my own watch back on and left.
I never even asked the prices.
That whole interaction was bizarre to me. I walked into a Rolex-only store ready to buy a Rolex and somehow there was basically nothing they could sell me.
I didn’t even take a picture of either Rolex I tried, which is funny because I photographed almost everything else that day. The contrast with the other stores was interesting too.
Omega was almost the opposite. They were pushing the Aqua Terra pretty hard and clearly wanted to make the sale. I loved the 38 mm Aqua Terra, but the sales pressure actually felt a little strange. They didn't have the deep blue dial I wanted in 38 mm.
Tudor was interesting. The BB58 GMT initially looked amazing, but under the store lighting I started noticing things that bothered me: the gilt looked more yellow than I expected, the black bezel and black dial looked like different tones, and the actual display watch they would have sold me already had visible scratches. I’m not saying those are “defects.” I’m saying that if I’m about to spend around $5k, I want the actual watch in front of me to convince me, not need explanations for why things I’m seeing shouldn’t bother me.
IWC Mark XX was nice, but for the money I wanted something with more personality.
Then I went to Macy’s and tried Longines.
Funny enough, that was probably the most enjoyable sales interaction. The salesperson didn’t know nearly as much about watches as the boutique employees, but she was actually excited about the watches and talked about how they looked instead of just nodding along with everything I said.
And the biggest surprise of the whole day?
**My favorite watch was the Longines Conquest 38.**
I also tried the Spirit Zulu Time, although they didn’t have the green-bezel version I really want to see.
After handling Rolex, Omega, Tudor, IWC and Longines back-to-back, I also came away feeling that the visible finishing gap between Longines and the more expensive brands is nowhere near as dramatic as I expected.
So my takeaway from the day was basically:
The Rolex name impressed me more than the actual Rolex did.
The Longines impressed me more after I put it on than it ever did in pictures.
Anyone else have a similar first experience trying Rolex in person?
Got my Seestern Titanium Limited Edition today and......
I bought it as a daily/work watch because I wanted something lightweight, rugged, and easy to wear without worrying about it.
The titanium finish gives it that darker, industrial tool-watch look, and the brushed bezel looks fantastic when the light hits it. The proportions also work really well on the wrist, it just feels perfect.
What surprised me the most is the dial, I know this is heavily inspired by the Tudor Pelagos, but I actually prefer the Seestern dial. The lack of a logo and the less crowded text makes it feel cleaner.
The bright white indices and snowflake-style hands get all the attention, which fits the whole tool-watch aesthetic perfectly.
The small “SEESTERN Titanium” and “Automatic / Limited Edition” text gives it just enough identity without cluttering everything up.
I’ve handled the actual Tudor Pelagos before, and obviously the Tudor is the superior watch when it comes to movement, heritage, QC, etc. I’m not trying to pretend otherwise, but purely from a visual/design standpoint, I genuinely prefer what Seestern did with the dial.
This is also why I’ve been enjoying Chinese watches so much lately. They take familiar designs and are willing to experiment with them instead of treating every detail as sacred.
For the price, this thing is ridiculous.
Seestern Titanium Limited Edition — officially my new daily/work watch.
Seeing the BB58 GMT in person ruined it for me
I think the bright lights in the store made the gilt appear more yellowish.
Also, the different black tone between the bezel and the dial threw me off.
I'm addicted to Dive Watch
I just got the green bezel Watchdives Black Bay homage. It’s now my 5th dive watch and my 3rd Black Bay homage… and honestly, it probably won’t be the last.
I will still wear my Pagani the most, and I don’t think that’s changing anytime soon. I just love the proportions, the snowflake hands, and even the dial text. It just clicks with me.
The Watchdives is really nice though:
*37mm case
*11mm thick
*Quick-release bracelet
*Quartz movement (which is actually a huge plus for me)
I know most people rank Pagani below Watchdives, but I genuinely think this particular Pagani model is on the same level in terms of finishing and overall feel. The only area where Watchdives clearly wins is the lume, and that’s something I personally don’t care much about.
At this point, I’ve come to the conclusion that dive watches are probably the easiest style to homage while still looking and feeling genuinely luxurious. They seem to capture the design language really well without feeling cheap.
I’m already planning my next dive watch. Anyone else keep telling themselves “this is the last one” and then immediately start looking for the next?
Is there different pools on chess.com?
I’ve been playing on Chess.com for about 6 months, and I’m genuinely curious if this is a real thing or if I’m just imagining it.
I’m still pretty new to chess, but I’ve been having a lot of fun and I feel like I’m gradually improving.
What I’ve noticed is that my experience seems to change week to week, not day to day. Some weeks it feels like I’m playing people right around my level. Other weeks it feels like my opponents are much weaker, and then there are weeks where it seems like everyone knows exactly how to punish every mistake I make.
I’m playing the same openings most of the time, but some weeks it feels like every opponent knows all the theory and counters them perfectly, while other weeks they seem completely unfamiliar with them.
Does Chess.com use different matchmaking pools, or do rating pools somehow fluctuate over time? Or is this just normal variance and I’m noticing patterns that aren’t really there?
I know I could be completely delusional, but this has been my experience consistently over the last six months, so I figured I’d ask.
Another one that exceeded my expectations
I just received my Addiesdive AD2043, and I’m genuinely impressed. The watch is absolutely beautiful
I have been looking for a white dial diver with a blue bezel, but most options I found had a lighter blue that didn’t really click with me. This watch looked more navy in photos, so I decided to order it and wow, it exceeded my expectations
The color combination is perfect. The white dial paired with the deep navy bezel looks incredibly clean and classy. What makes it even better is how the bezel changes depending on the lighting so sometimes it looks blue, and other times almost black, which gives the watch an interesting feeling
The bracelet is also surprisingly good. It is adjustable and the finishing is solid, comfortable, and matches the overall premium look of the watch perfectly
At 39mm in diameter and 13mm thick, the sizing is just perfect. It wears comfortably on the wrist and has a balanced presence without feeling too bulky
I don't care about the lume but I know many people, the lume is so good and beautiful. It is automatic with seiko NH35 movement
Overall, the watch feels fantastic, looks stunning, and honestly exceeded my expectations in every way, I can't believe I paid $100 for it
10/10

Strap changes everything
Since I got the SM I didn't know what to do with my PD, both competes for the same wrist time, then I realized that I can just change its purpose to more dressy watch by just changing the strap
And here is the result
- the SM is for jeans and smart casual outfits
- the PD is for chinos and business casual outfits
It is amazing how changing the strap changes the whole watch vibe
