Dr. Soles Sizing Inquiry

I’m a little confused now on how Nick’s determines what sizes can and cannot be built with a Dr Soles half sole.

I found this pair on the in-stock page that is built with half soles. These are an 11.5 FFF and standard double row stitchdown.

I am a 12F/11FF mismated, which is smaller in overall width and volume than the pictured pair but have been told no to half soles on my builds.

Can I get a clearer answer on the size cutoff for Dr. Soles.

Formal Last Releases

Kinda cool. Taking what I’m assuming is their most popular leathers on the casual last and making formal boots out of them too. Wouldn’t mind a JWF myself

Wesco Mr Lou, Black Bison

Custom? Limited Edition? Special Run? Not sure what to call these. Only 30 pairs made. Ended up being a 3 week lead time for me and since I live 45 minutes from Scappoose they arrived overnight as always.

These are impressive. Probably one of the most flawless boots I’ve seen Wesco produce and I’ve always gotten pretty lucky on their build quality.

Also pretty cool that the Nick’s mystery belt that I got this week also happened to be in black bison. What are the odds?

Shell Dump: Asphalt Jungle

Roads in downtown Portland need to be built and my Nick’s need to be worn so here we go.

Enjoying them as always. As these boots get older and more worn my desire to keep them pristine dwindles. Not like anything we’re doing this summer is too harsh (although I will be coming up to the Spokane Fire here shortly with equipment).

Buck’s Boots, chopped by Frank’s

I got these boots from Buck’s a few months ago.

Michael is a great builder and his prices are unbeatable. I think there must have been a mistake on my end or a miscommunication on leather selection and upper sizing though. The uppers in the top 3” were comically large on my legs. The custom lasts made seemed spot on and the lower half of the uppers seemed usable.

I sat on these boots for a while deciding what to do. I wasn’t going to complain and hassle a small builder into taking a loss so I decided to chop them. Sent them off to Frank’s and this was the result.

Frank’s did a great job as expected. Reasonable $40+shipping to chop the uppers. Swapped out the remaining top speed hook to an eyelet. I didn’t ask for the pull loop to be added or the tops to be totally stitched and finished so that was nice touch.

First Alden’s (that I’m keeping)

Been through a few trials of sizing with Alden but stayed persistent. Found that the EE width in the TruBalance and Modified work well for me.

These are a 40504, made for Leather Soul Honolulu in Cigar Shell Cordovan

I already have black and Color 8 elsewhere so I really wanted one of the Alden “exclusive colors” and these were perfect

Burning the Marbled Midnight Oil

Missing the forest, no fire contracts called, so let’s mess around and build a highway while we continue to break these in.

Not sure if we’re over that hump and the horse boots stopping fighting but these are getting easier to wear all day now

Mystery Belt Day

Actually got exactly the leather I was hoping for when I placed the order. Really wanted bison and I needed another black work belt.

This is the 3rd mystery/seconds belt I’ve gotten from Nick’s along with DS Olive and Tan Oiled Latigo. I think I purchased the Black CXL one on purpose.

Appreciate Nick’s belt lineup. They have served me well for a long time. Loved the CXL and Latigo ones so much that they’ve been shortened after my weight loss

More horse and exotics in the future?

Obviously shell and minimal horse leathers have been a part of the catalog recently and exotics used to be available probably decades ago now (like White’s wasn’t there more ostrich, caiman, etc available mainly in packers?).

With this email it got me wondering if there might be more non-cowhide leathers available for boots in the future.

Would certainly see more purchases from snobs/degenerates like myself if there was fancier options…🤔

White’s Workhorse

This has been my go-to boot every day at work since I got them about a month ago.

Breaking in nicely, very comfortable now that White’s has my last and upper pattern figured out. My only regret is not getting them in a 10” height

Shell Cordovan Photo Dump

Not much going on with the state of the collection. I think we are at 4 or 5 boots on order that I’m waiting for. Experimenting poorly with photography in case I want to Dome one of my upcoming builds.

This is what a machine lasted boot looks like

Couldn’t even be bothered to have an American worker hand last their special edition boots 🤷‍♂️

Edit: To add some context this is JK’s Liberty 250 boot.

This screenshot doesn’t show the machine lasting process (why would they advertise a cheaper process they’ve been trying to hide?). It’s just showing that the vamps here have no nail holes or creases from the hand lasting process. It’s showing a toe that is clearly overstretched from the machine lasting process that occurred before this step in production. Note the large creasing at the bottom of the toe.

We have known JK to be machine lasting their boots as of the last year or so. This is just more evidence for that claim

Ridgeway Incoming?

Whoa whoa, Vince is bringing new outsoles? Definitely one of my least favorite outsoles and has kept me from buying a few second hand Vibergs but I’m always a fan of more options for the customers
