Extrusion with a slope? (Don't know what to call it)

Heya friends, I'm making the migration from sketchup to autocad because if the continued push towards making the free version unusable. I get free access to Autocad via university so I figured I'd give it a go.

If anyone could point me towards specific tutorials for the following operations I'd be super grateful.

I need to:

Make a cuboid

Trace a letter or other character on the top surface

Extrude that character up

Slope/angle the extrusion so the sides form like a pyramid if that makes sense? It's so the physical opject doesn't get stuck if pressed into something.

If you're familiar with moveable metal type for letterpress, that's exactly what I'm trying to recreate.

Thanks for your help!

Name that binding!

Heya friends, any experts in Wasōbon care to tell me what this particular style is? All the available English language resources I can find only list the 4 classic methods; Yotsume, Koki, Kikko, and Asa-No-Ha.

Gift for an extremely important tutor

I have been invited to study paper making at one of the 3 UNESCO world heritage sites in Japan. This is a dream come true for me, a once in a lifetime opportunity.

I understand there are quite strict rules around the gift giving culture and you shouldn't spend too much, but it feels improper as a westerner to not do something above and beyond to recognise what an important moment this will be for me.

I make Tetsuyōsō and was considering making a small one using paper from Ogawa, but I don't know if this would be appreciated, too much or too little.

Your advice would be greatly appreciated!

Documented evidence to support tradition

Hello friends,

So the idea of striking out plates and blocks is something that's interested me for a long time. It's reported as a traditional practice and is well documented in the 20th century, especially with the reduction print concept stolen from Murray Griffin by Picasso in the 30's.

But before that gets a bit more difficult. Outside of a small number of very specific disputes over pay, copyright and the like, there doesn't seem to be very much actual evidence of this taking place. Certainly not at the scale that it's assumed to have been. Pair that with reliable accounts of Goya and Rembrand courting print shops trying to get new editions of older works to raise money and Dürer woodblocks still in use hundreds of years after his death, and this idea doesn't seem to hold much water.

I don't know for certain, but it seems to me to be some sort of Victorian romanticism, the kind that gave us chivalrous knights and vikings with horned helmets.

So I ask you all; Is there actually any evidence, one way or the other, to back up this tradition prior to the 20th century?

London Type Archive Matrix Engraving machines

Does anyone know what happened to the matrix engraver setup that the Type Archive/Museum had?

I know portions of the collection were sold, and others returned to Monotype when the Science Museum cut its funding (still bitter about that). I've not been able to find any clear information about it though.

It'd be a shame if access to it has been lost entirely. As far as I understand it was the only still in operation in the UK.

Chitsu wrap around cover instructions

Uma Kinoshita, From tree to paper.

  • EDIT: I found information here if anyone else is interested. Links on the side bar go through a few different options. It's in Japanese, but the pictures are good and Google translate will get you by. *

I saw this acordian fold book at an exhibition a few days ago. It is paired with a chitsu - a traditional separate wrap around hard cover with toggle.

I have a pretty good idea on how it's put together but if anyone out there has a detailed understanding they could share I would be very grateful. Google hasn't been very helpful, not least because chitsu has 2 meanings; wrap around book cover and vagina. Sooo those search results are interesting.

Music notation

Hey friends, does anyone know any foundries casting music notation? Ideally in the UK, but given its rarity I'll import if needs be.

Am I trans (enough?)?

[tw: 2 brieif mention of childhood trauma- not specific, & 1 bereavement]

Hey, sorry this is going to be a long, rambling post. Feel free to skip to the last paragraph if you don't want all the preamble.

I have autism, the kind that comes with the 'high burden of proof' that 13 years after diagnosis I'm still questioning whether the professional with all that learning and expertise might have been wrong because everyone has panic attacks in public right? I'm having the same 'crisis of faith' for want of a better word about my gender. There's so many overlapping things that it's really difficult to pick apart.

Anyway, from as far back as I can remember I have never felt 'right' in my own body. I never really understood why though.

When I got my autism diagnosis things started to make a little more sense. Feeling apart from everyone else, not always getting the right signals coming through.

But it didn't explain everything. I still had this... diffused feeling of not belonging within myself.

After losing my parents 8 years ago I had like a hard reset. Fell for a guy and the heteronormative confirmation bias broke and I came out as pan. As things progressed he let me know he was a trans guy and while ultimately it didn't go anywhere beyond friendship we had long conversations about his journey, how I felt and everything he said just seemed to fit. But again, there was something missing from the picture.

About 4 years ago I confronted some childhood trauma that explained I guess the last dregs of what I worked out were a whole bunch of guilt and shame that shouldn't have been put on me.

Sorry, that was a lot.

But yeah, so things that make me think I am not cis: I don't feel any real connection to or ownership of either of the 'binary' gender concepts for perhaps 80% of the time. The other time is spent wildly fluctuating between wanting to be either at the hyper masc/fem ends of the spectrum or some sort of perfect union of both extremes - just don't ask me to define what that would look like in any meaningful way, I haven't really got that far yet. I think overall I am generally more fem in how I present personality wise but not to the point that a random passerby would notice.

Counter arguments are: Autistic body disconection, childhood trauma and sexuality are just overlaying in a way that makes a square hole and it just happens that the triangle fits. After all if I don't have an answer to what I would choose to be, how can I make a judgement with any certainty?

The Well Below The Valley

Entirely forgot to post this at the time. Things were hectic!

So after taking the second binding class at uni and having created 1 (one) coptic bound sketch book I decided to create an edition of ten artist's books containing 17 linocuts and letterpress text set to the medieval ballad The Well Below the Valley for my university's multiples fare. Exactly 4 weeks later.

Sooooooo, trying to balance that with a week of site residency, my normal uni work and the audacity of needing sleep, I broke through and managed to get the last one bound an hour before the fare opened. Managed to get 150 pages type-set and printed double sided in a single day in our letterpress room! It was... intense.

Anyway, here's some pictures! Not the best binding but this was number 7 I think so literally my 8th time binding coptic style and definitely rushing things!

KCSIE coordinated action/pressure groups?

Hey friends, I was in education for 15 years across a number of different settings and roles, from secondary sen support to post 16 safeguarding lead & head of student support. Changed careers around 8 years ago due to burnout and other mental health issues, came out (Trans/non binary/gender fluid/haven't quite worked stuff out *exactly* yet) around the same time.

I've been avoiding as much as possible, save for signing petitions, mailing my mp and all that, engaging with the new guidance as much as possible because of how triggering it all is. I made the mistake of reading it in full on Monday and I have been literally, physically shaking with rage ever since. Heart rate through the roof, emailing all my former colleagues trying to foster some kind of mass movement.

So I popped on here to join the community (long overdue, sorry!) and ask if there already exists some sort of coordinated effort or if not how we might go about starting one?

Thanks!

Lisdexamfetamine dose too high?

I have my next titration appointment next week so I'll be able to discuss it then, but I thought I'd try and get ahead of this. I know I posted expressing concerns a few days ago but there's new stuff, but still, apologise if this is spamming.

I have autism also, and it's the kind that comes with the high burden of proof and I'm really starting to second guess myself and how the 50mg is affecting me vs the 30. I'm 4 weeks into the 50 now.

So I've noticed that I'm getting a lot more vocal about things that I care about, and that's predominantly online, and it's pretty much exclusively about things that upset me. It's all stuff that I've expressed in person though, and it's stuff that a lot of people are justifiably upset about, so I don't think I'm getting more irritable? Maybe I've just got more capacity to get involved now?

I have slight tremors for a few hours after drinking tea, but that's an expected side effect and while frustrating because I'm an artist, it's something I can manage.

I seem to be a little less better at organising my time on 50 compared to 30, but just in a "oh, hold on, I was going to do that first' and recalibrate or maybe take a little bit longer to get started where as before it was just lock in. But that said, I spent the first 4 weeks (2 on 30, 2 on 50) working morning till night, no breaks and no days off so maybe I'm just burnt out a bit?

I'm not feeling any euphoria or need to take more than my prescribed dose. If anything I'm thinking of asking to get it reduced, but those are key tells that the dose is too high so maybe it's not and I'm still just getting used to stuff?

Also I'm well aware of the 'Autism Surge' that can come with Audhd people treating the ADHD side of things, so maybe it's just that? Maybe it's Maybelline?

Again, sorry if I'm repeating myself. Any thoughts are appreciated.

Mega Tellysokka?

"Rather than use a single massive unstable tellyporta engine, the Mega-Tellyshokka utilizes ten customised Kill Kroozers which, using the same principle as Shokk Attack Guns, channel their power and create a tunnel through the Warp for Ork fleets to pour through."

So, I'm definitely making a couple of kustom Kroozers with tellyshokka projectors once I've finished what's on my table.

What do you reckon for rules? Obviously massively unstable, probably limited conventional weapon systems because of how much space/energy the tellyshokka would need.

But telleporta attacks? Shifting friendlies or enemies across the battlefield? Blipping ships out of existence? Or maybe it's just too powerful for in-game effects and it'll serve like transports in the convoy mission - something to defend against a raid?

Plague Ogryn proxy

Made this fella a year back for Necromunda, just for fun. Who doesn't want a freakish hulk roaming the underhive, right?

In the process of resculpting it with an eye to licencing it out; a few well known miniature companies have expressed interest.

And a few bonus credits to any scummer that knows where this monstrosity originates from...

Are 40mg Lisdexamfetamine doses commonly available?

It's been 3 weeks now on 50mg, had 2 weeks prior on 30. The first week on 50 was rough but it's settled now. I'm getting a few minor, but kinda frustrating side effects that the 30 wasn't triggering. I'm an artist and I'm noticing a very slight tremor every once in a while.

The 30 was enough to get a benefit, maybe not as much as the 50 though. I don't know if there's an in-between dose that'll still get more of a benefit but without the shake?
