Italian phonology

Is it true that in some parts of Northern Italy (I’m not talking about dialects), we almost never hear [ɔ] and [ɛ] in stressed syllables? For example: [ˈvoʎʎa] and [ˈmeʎʎo] instead of [ˈvɔʎʎa] and [mɛʎʎo].

[ɕ] and [ç]

I've seen both [ɕ] and [ç] given as pronunciations of the Swedish tj-sound, but I'm still confused. Is there actually a lack of consensus about its phonetic realization, or is this simply a matter of regional variation? I've been trying to find sources that explicitly describe [ç] as a realization of the tj-sound, but I haven't had much luck. Does anyone know of any (free) books or papers discussing this? It's just that I make [ç] more naturally than [ɕ].

Genie??

I'm not sure what "genie" means in Swedish. Does it refer to a spirit, or to the genie from the lamp?

It's because I found both words in the dictionary: geni and genie.

Swedish Vowels

Does the tip I found in a teaching material for pronouncing Swedish vowels actually work in practice? The material suggests the following: to pronounce ö, one should produce the sound of [e] with rounded lips, as if pronouncing [o]. For u, it recommends producing the sound of [i] with rounded lips, as if pronouncing [u]. As for y, the guidance is to produce the sound of [i] with rounded lips, but with more pronounced rounding, forming a more forward-projected pucker. Do these guidelines actually correspond to the pronunciation of spoken Swedish?

Question about pronunciation and intonation

When studying Korean, I saw many sources stating that the language doesn't have a stressed syllable. However, I'm left in doubt about how this works in practice. Even though Korean doesn't have a lexical accent (that changes the meaning of words), is there some syllable that is naturally pronounced more strongly, longer, or with a higher tone in a word or phrase?

Text-to-IPA Converter

Has anyone here used otoipa.org extensively? Does it tend to make more mistakes with isolated words or with full sentences? And what kinds of transcription errors does it usually make (for example, tones, coarticulation, language-specific phonology, reduced words, etc.)?

Do you know of any other websites or tools that you consider more reliable for producing accurate phonetic (IPA) transcriptions of sentences?

Has anyone here used toipa.org a lot? Does it tend to make more mistakes with isolated words or with full phrases? And which types of transcription does it tend to get wrong (e.g., tones, coarticulation, phonology of specific languages, reduced words, etc.)? Do you have any other site/tool that you consider more reliable for accurate phonetic transcriptions (TL) of sentences?

Are voiced consonants pronounced as voiceless consonants before voiceless consonants in Norwegian?

Does assimilation of voiced consonants occur when they are followed by voiceless consonants in Norwegian? In Czech, in the word kavka, the phoneme /v/ is devoiced under the influence of /k/ and is pronounced as [f], resulting in [ˈkafka]. This process occurs systematically whenever a voiced consonant is followed by a voiceless consonant. Does this also happen in Norwegian? For example, in: avtale, avkom, avgift, hovedstad, ubetalt, adkomst, and godt?

Long consonants

When a stressed vowel is short in Swedish, is the following consonant always long, even if it is not geminated? For example: häs:t, fis:k, han:d, mjöl:k.

I'm using a simplified phonetic transcription from the Lexin dictionary because what interests me here is whether the consonant is long.

Vowel length in inflection:

Do adjectives and nouns that have a long vowel keep that long vowel when they are inflected?

For example:

  • sjuk [ɧʉːk] → sjukt [ɧʉkt]
  • god [ɡuːd] → gott [ɡɔtː]

In these cases, is the long vowel preserved during inflection? If not, are there any general rules or common patterns that explain when the vowel length changes?

I'm not sure if the phonetic transcriptions are correct.

A New Table on Long Vowel Diphthongization

This is a new table on the diphthongization of long vowels. I know that this diphthongization is not phonemic and that there is no single fully standardized realization. For that reason, I would like to know whether this table is valid for Central Swedish.

Could someone who understands phonetics tell me whether the IPA transcriptions presented in it are reasonably close to Central Swedish? The table is based on the "Diphthongization" section of the article Swedish Phonology.

Phoneme Broad Narrow Type

-----------------------------------------------

/iː/ iː [ɪ̝i] high front

/yː/ yː [ʏ̝y] high front rounded

/ʉː/ ʉː [ʏʉ̟] high central rounded

/uː/ uː [ʊü] high back rounded

/eː/ eː [iɛ̠] mid front

/oː/ oː [ʊɔ̈] mid back rounded

/ɛː/ ɛː [eɛ̈] open-mid front

/øː/ øː [øœ] open-mid front rounded

Sj-ljudet som velar frikativa [xʷ]

I only understand the basics of phonetics. In the Swedish dialects where the sj-ljud is pronounced as [xʷ], are the lips rounded during the production of [x], or only afterwards? Is this lip rounding always present, or does it depend on the context?

Retroflex Consonants

I am a beginner in Swedish and still at a very basic level. I am trying to pronounce the retroflex consonants. To me, there seems to be very little difference between [ʈ, ɖ, ɳ, ɭ] and [t, d, n, l], especially between [ɳ] and [ɭ]. I have not yet been able to produce the retroflex sound corresponding to s correctly.

Please listen to the audio and tell me whether I am pronouncing these consonants correctly. Any tips on how to improve would also be appreciated.

I pronounced some short words emphatically to make the sounds stand out more clearly. Please let me know which ones are correct and which ones are incorrect.

Meaning of the word "tok"

After all, does tok mean "crazy", "foolish", or both? Is it considered an offensive word? I'm asking because, in my native language, Portuguese, the word bobo ("silly", "foolish", or "naive", depending on the context) can mean someone who is innocent or gullible, and in some situations it can even sound affectionate. Can tok be used in a similar way?

Os suecos entendem bem o sueco da Finlândia?

Pretendo falar com esse sotaque porque simplesmente não consigo aprender as consoantes retroflexas. Já tentei várias vezes, mas, para mim, esse é de longe o aspecto mais difícil da pronúncia sueca.

Minha ideia é usar o sueco da Finlândia ao falar. Mesmo assim, pretendo ouvir bastante os sotaques da Suécia para desenvolver a compreensão auditiva, apenas não pretendo imitá-los na minha própria fala.
