home on the mend from bronchitis today and wanted to try my hand at some clothes for my new boy Squid. I just bought a sewing machine and have literally no other experience but I’m a fast learner and artistically minded so I’m hoping to just whip something up. Not necessarily looking for patterns but just ideas of what the clothes for your babies look like. Basically I’m looking for ideas on rear leg sleeves and attachment points. Also ideas for fabric, I have lots of secondhand clothes I’d like to reuse - comfortable but breathable, and to prevent hair tangling or irritating, no fleece as I live in the desert! Don’t need to keep him super warm for now but he’s an anxious little man and I think he would feel more secure. Any pics or advice welcome!
P.S. belly band is because he doesn’t know yet that Dad’s bed is not for peeing (or pooping). No shame little buddy, you’ll learn! The harness is just for desensitization as he is not yet used to leash walking. He only wears it in short increments. Overall he is doing great for leaving his family at eight months and being here only a few short days (while I was super sick! Came down with a chest cold the morning after getting him, on Monday)
Long story, buckle up. YES I have not named my nine year old son. YES I gave birth to him nine years and seven weeks ago, NO I did not take him from the playground at the elementary school down the street. I am a loving mother! I would never do such a thing! Besides any child would be lucky in my care, roof over their head, food, I just think of the poor starving kids in Africa and how they would love to live in my middle-class white suburban Indiana home. Who wouldn’t?
But anyway, YES I am trying to name my nine year old. NO it’s not because I want to. It’s because my hellspawned mother in law made some snide comment the other day at a family barbecue. We were even under a gazebo! At the park! How can you be so negative under a gazebo at the park?
For my Kid’s whole life (nine years and seven weeks) we’ve been calling him Kid. It just stuck. But my mother in law pulled me aside near the fire pit three days ago and said, “Melanie, you should really give that child a name.”
And I said “Sharon, you should really keep your whore mouth shut!” Sharon does, in fact, have a whore mouth, unlike mine, which is perfectly holy and sacred. Hence why any name I speak is bound to be less than sufficient for my beautiful Kid.
But in a sense she’s right, though I hate to admit it. My Kid deserves a name that is as powerful and majestic as he is. So the last few nights after my husband Ronnie went to sleep on the couch (notice how I haven’t fucking mentioned Ronnie once until now? It’s because Ronnie has a fucking whore mouth too just like his mother).
On a side note, does anyone know where to buy chloroform local to Indiana?
But all this to say, I need advice. Here are some of the names I’ve come up with. They’re family names with modern twists, so please no rude comments. If it’s not your taste that’s fine. But tell me what you DO like and why.
For reference, my Kid is 5’11, dark curly hair, some freckles, slim build, really good with a hammer. Our last name starts with a D and rhymes with Pickenson.
Cummerbund Steven D_________
(named after my grandpa Steve who always wore his trusty cummerbund)
Kenton Bustin D_________
(named after my uncle Kenton who died of a TBI while using an e-scooter shortly before Kid was born)
Womblebond D__________
(No middle name for this one, womblebond is the name of my grandpa Steve’s stock company)
Flims Briggety D_________
(Definitely the most out there, but named after a pet squirrel I had growing up in Mississippi, who touched my life and gave my little brother rabies. My brother’s name is not important. I’ve forgotten after all these years.)
Any other suggestions that fit my son’s regal, noble nature are much appreciated!
Sharon, if you’re reading this, fuck all the way off you limpface buffooon. Little do you know your son is $31k in the hole at the casino clinging on his side whore while I expend blood, sweat, and tears making six figures at Cricut corporate. And I make bomb ass t shirts. Who’s the daddy now?!
New client. Deaf and near Blind senior pup. This was my first full body haircut, first double coat shave (he was shaved in the past by another groomer) #7 on body blended into legs and head
He would literally not stop strutting around after the haircut (before he was hiding) so I couldn’t get a great pic
- I have done parts of a shave before but never been confident enough to finish all the delicate areas and he had lots of lumps and bumps that may make it look uneven. Does the end result of the coat look choppy or smooth? Can you give me any feedback based on the photos? He was very soft and Mom was happy.
my girl had very long hair that parted down her back at 8 months old when I rescued her, but she was matted and had to be taken short. now that she’s a year and a half her coat has changed and i am interested in growing it out long. it is very fine and incredibly soft and cottony but tangles quickly. i am capable of daily / twice daily brushing and regular grooming. does her hair look suitable for growing out?
she is schnauzer, poodle, chihuahua, shih tzu, lhasa apso, cocker spaniel, german shepherd (haha). quite the mix of hair types
I’m in bed and this is pissing me off. If I lay on the bottom of my ribcage on either side where it sticks out or move my body in a certain way my ribs pops out of place or something and I have to pop it back in. Probably happens at least daily by now. It feels disgusting lmao. Tell me I’m not alone
I have been learning for a few months under a coworker mentor on the weekends. Today I got to do my first official face trim haircut on a pup (he came in about a month ago for the first time at our salon and didn’t need a clipper cut yet but I did his face feet tail and sani. I tried my best to remove those pesky stray hairs around the mouth and nose, he was a wiggly boy
After I was done with the trim I found the photo from the last time he was here, with a different groomer, just for reference
CC? Did I do a decent enough job? Dad seemed happy :) I thought he looked cute but any pointers would be great
I wish I could trim that stray hair on his ear I spot now lol
She looks ridiculous, I know. She’s a somewhat recent young rescue and is still getting used to grooming. Finally decided to grow the top knot out and I’m just trying to keep it banded to get her used to it. I take them out every day and use dog bands that are similar to small human ponytail holders in material. Anything rubber stays better but mats in her immediately. She also looks cute but silly with pigtails.
Mine is the bastard love child of a novel I drafted on and off for six years and eventually scrapped the plot of. Heavily inspired by my own experiences growing up mentally ill and queer in the Midwest.
Are there any locations, events, or specific ideas that your projects sprung forth from?
I’ll start - I work in dog grooming and it’s amazing to be able to work with a dog from terrified to being your best friend, and then get to bring them back to their owners looking happy and clean :)
It’s a ton of work and not for everybody but I have a background in zoology and I love what I do.
Also feel free to tell me if you hate yours and why it sucks. Lol
Hi all, thanks in advance.
I am a fairly new baby groomer, though I have a zoology degree with a focus in canine behavior and years of experience handling dogs. So I feel that I have a very good foundation for working with dogs.
I don’t do full haircuts yet, just a glorified bather who has their own clients and makes commission. I’m working on my outline trims and have an artistic eye so I expect once my scissor and clipper skills improve I’ll have a knack for the natural proportions.
But due to my bathing status and to my location (SW USA, where a lot of people have outside or farm dogs) a lot of my clients are folks whose pups have never been groomed before, or at least not regularly. I get tons of huskies, heelers, collies, pyrenees, chows, shepherds, shelter mixes, etc. A lot of them are very nervous and flighty especially in our high-volume cage free salon environment. I will say out of all the cage free setups I’ve seen ours is definitely very well managed and the dogs do truly enjoy it, but it’s also chaos all the time 😝
I have read The Other End Of The Leash and know a lot about how my body language and tone/handling conveys information to dogs even when we don’t intend it. I always take it very slow with my nervous babies, talk to them, tell them everything I’m doing, give them tons of love and praise and when I do need to correct a behavior I am firm but kind. Slow, firm, gentle massaging touch always. Lots of treats if they can have them. Always being positive even when frustrated, giving dogs breaks and taking them myself when needed. Overall reminding myself every day that this is a terrifying experience for a dog who has no idea what they’re doing, and trying to make it the absolute best I can!
I am very proud to say that every single one of my clients who has come in scared has been strutting their stuff and so happy, attached to me by the end. The pictured pup jumped at every touch yesterday, wouldn’t let anyone but me touch him/pick him up (he didn’t want it but we came to an understanding!) wanted to fight for bath, dryer, and nails. But he was so sweet and treat motivated and by the end he was bouncing around the salon, taking pets from others, even jumped up on my table by himself to hang out!
I really enjoy working with these nervous dogs and helping them to realize grooming isn’t a scary experience, or it doesn’t have to be. If anyone has further suggestions from their experience I would love to hear them. I am always looking to learn and improve so I can be the best I can for the babies that are entrusted in my care.
love my girl. anyone wanna guess what kind of mutt she is? I have her DNA results lol
I’m drunk at my friends house brought my dog and what is she doing 😭
Hi all. I probably won’t share much more after this as I continue drafting but I am seeking, from those who read my first chapter, feedback on chapter two. The nonlinear narrative makes it tricky to ensure the direction I am taking sustains the readers’ attention. Where did I lose you? What has you confused? Some vagueness is intentional, but I’d love to know if anything is confusing without my meaning to. Thanks again, and always.
the rescue who works with the communities on the reservations around here brought me this boy today. heartbreakingly, he was being severely neglected and left to wander and had a tail completely full of burrs and all over his body as well. completely encrusted in dirt down to the skin and trapped under the mats and compacted undercoat. severe pelting on the rear and tail. they said if I needed to fully shave him to do so but I was determined to save as much coat as I could.
his nails were so long he was unwilling to walk, and the rescue gentleman thinks he’s been run over several times. the rescue gentleman actually had to just take him from where he was wandering and is going to keep him as one of his personal pups. it was amazing to see him start to feel better as more and more hair and burrs came off. he was incredibly shut down and I don’t know that he’s ever been treated so kindly in his life. he passed out sound asleep when we were done, probably his first safe nap in a very long while.
He took a few steps with support, I think he has a bad hip. He laid down for everything else, bath brush and drying but we got it done. he did get vaccinated before today but next up is a full vet exam. he is probably 7 or 8 which is essentially the maximum dog lifespan in his situation in those communities.
Bear has so much more love left to give. I am deeply honored and emotionally touched to have been a part of his new life today. I wish him many more happy years and hope to see him in the future for return grooming!
ps. My arms hurt. I also did a pyr and a very fluffy heeler. send ibuprofen
I donated two grooms today to a rescue that helps animals on the reservations nearby. Mr. Oscar was in dire need of a good spa day. He was shot and had surgery (healed now) to remove his shoulder blade! He was very shut down at first, growling a little and did not want me to touch him. It took 6 hours, but I got him and his friend (chow mix w/ severely compacted undercoat) all fixed up and feeling better and by the end Oscar didn’t want to go back to the foster, which broke my heart! If anyone is located in the SW USA (NM) and needs a sweet boy who deserves a second chance at life, message me.
Grateful for the feedback on the first two pages of my novel. I finally have a more complete first chapter to share. Let me know where I lose you, please, and why. Thank you again, and thank you in advance.
How else to relax after your last shift of the week besides smoking a j and watching ur fish
