First time watching this show, it actually holds up

I’m only halfway through season 2. There are of course some things that would be considered very conservative today but factoring in the time period this show actually holds up remarkably well. It’s got HEART. And 25 episode seasons!?!? This show may be old as hell but it’s really a breath of fresh air to me.

If you don’t meet your baby right away do you still get the “magic moment” when you do meet them?

When mom and baby are separated for long periods of time without ever “meeting” each other, do you still get the “happy hour” hormones after birth? What about when you meet the baby after a really long delay? Sorry I just have a lot of weird fears around it.

ETA thank you so much for all the replies, I am reading all of them and they are making me feel a lot better. These all sound like much more grounded and realistic experiences than the dramatized tiktoks.

How would you help an employee who refuses to talk on the phone?

While talking on the phone isn’t the WHOLE job, it is something that absolutely needs to be done relatively often. Employee has only worked here 3 weeks and noticeably avoids making phone calls at all costs. Even when it causes major problems and delays and costs the firm and client money. Employee is roughly 30 years old. Employee has a company phone to use. How would you approach this?

ETA Employee went straight through for a masters degree then license so we are their first ever true full time job despite their age

Caught employee lying red handed

I’m just venting because I’m so pissed.

New employee, fresh out of school with no field experience but thinks he knows everything. Keeps giving me the affirmative and then not doing what I tell him to do even though these are established written formal processes I’m asking him to follow. Keeps acting like I’m a total dumbass.

I went to review his work. There was already a work paper built with a bunch of necessary info and notes. He had created a new work paper. I could tell it was him because the template is at least 3 years outdated. I’m the one who created and maintains the template and I created the base template for each client on our team at the start of the year. Everyone else on the team is well aware of the new template format because it fixed things they didn’t like about the old copy.

I asked him why he created a brand new work paper and never asked anyone where the original was or for the correct template. He says he didn’t, it was already like that. I said I find that hard to believe. So I go into the file info and it clearly says he created it last week. I sent him a screenshot and he replied “interesting.”

I’m fucking fuming.

Rethinking my whole career

I’m going to finish the exams and get the license, I’m too far in to quit. But like. I don’t believe I want to work in accounting, in any capacity, ever again.

It’s somehow simultaneously unfathomably dull and boring, but also constantly having “emergencies” and extremely important deadlines.

Where is the filter?

Dishwasher came with the house, I do not have a manual or model number. In every video I look up the filter is just right there. I tried removing the disc in the middle but it just kept spinning this massive bolt and it didn’t feel right?

Are keystrokes only for disabled people?

Training a new hire. He is licensed with zero experience. I have 5 years experience and am about 6 months from getting my license. He seems peeved I am training him even though he’s literally never done this type of job before.

I was trying to tea ch him Alt+h+o+I because it’s saved me soooooo much time in this role. He got mad and said that’s an accessibility feature. I’m like, and? He said it’s for disabled people, you aren’t actually supposed to use it.

Like he’s just being a tool, right? It speeds up workflow….

Dad assaulted, looking for guidance (Michigan)

My parents have a tendency to intentionally freak me out. I’m looking for guidance on if what they are telling me has any foundation in reality.

My dad is a retired cop, was working security at a movie theater. This theater has had a LOT of issues with teenagers and implemented an ID check for all guests. My dad was checking IDs and this teen shoulder checked and moved past him. He followed the teen and put a hand on his shoulder and said “it’s time to go”. He punched my dad which knocked him unconscious. Then he and his friends spent about 5 min beating my dad while still unconscious. There was an obvious footprint on his face. He had a concussion, broken ribs, multiple broken bones in his face, lost two front teeth (the bones the teeth sit in were destroyed), and might lose his eye. The cops also just left my dad at the theater without taking him to the hospital or calling an ambulance but I guess that’s irrelevant.

Anyway the guy is apparently a 17 y/o known local MMA fighter. The cops said they didn’t have any actual evidence against him but he admitted it in interrogation. The other people did not admit it and were never arrested because of no evidence. This is how it came out that the theaters cameras are all fake. A different buildings camera caught them running away from the theater near the time of the incident.

The kids family have hired the previous city district attorney as his defense lawyer. He was charged with felony assault. Apparently the family is hellbent that he not get a felony and are fighting this with everything they have. My dad has paid 100% out of pocket for all medical expenses (bone grafts for his face were very expensive) and plans to sue the 17 year old to recoup.

My questions are, is it likely this guy walks free, and can they actually sue the teen?

I can learn social cues, I just don’t pick up on them.

Just venting. Autism doesn’t mean I am entirely incapable of learning any social cues ever. I just don’t pick up on them naturally. I can be taught. The fact that I’ve learned things (through a ton of effort) doesn’t mean I’m faking autism.

2/4, finally seeing the light at the end of the tunnel

I almost gave up so many times during FAR and AUD.

The first time I failed FAR I basically had a mental breakdown.

When I finally passed far, the day after there was a personal tragedy in my life and it just felt like I only got to enjoy the pass for only a handful of hours and so it was like I got zero motivation from it. Actually made me feel even worse because my dad nearly died and here I’ve spent a whole year telling my parents I can’t do this or that because CPA exam.

I just found out I passed aud and I swear it’s like a WHOLE different vibe now. Maybe I can actually do this! Maybe I’m not just throwing hundreds and hundreds of hours of my life down the drain….

Hang in there, it gets better! ❤️

AITA for moving in with my FIL?

This happened during Covid but it came up again recently. I’ll keep it as short as I can.

My SO and I were living in my parents basement during college. My mom was a heavy opiate addict. She tried to detox herself and went insane. I called 911. She got the 72 hour psych hold. My dad (a cop) was banned from the hospital and furious that I called 911. Kind of threatened me. My brother has several disabilities and is unhealthily dependent on my parents. He was vomiting from stress about my mom being gone and blamed me.

For a full year prior, FIL repeatedly asked us to move in. He travels extensively for work and some guys broke in while he was away and scared his gf so he wanted us in the house with her, even paved an entire second driveway and specifically said we could have the whole basement as our own private apartment with private parking and entrance. We said no bc my parents house was an hour closer to school. But after everything with my parents we decided we needed to take him up on his offer.

FIL is a full blown hoarder. I cleaned that entire fucking basement. It was HORRIBLE. We also made repairs to the bathroom and kitchenette to make them useable.

The literal day after we fully move in with FIL, a lot happened. BIL was illegally evicted and also moved in. FIL’s gf’s pregnant daughter, her bf, and their six dogs got kicked out of wherever they were living and moved in. SIL dropped out of college after *one week* and moved in. FIL decided not only would he no longer travel for work, he would work from home full time and the basement was now his office. So we were now sharing the basement with 5 people and 6 dogs. The basement has no bedrooms, it’s just a big room and a bathroom.

FIL immediately implemented a bunch of “rules” that were very clearly intended to get us to move out. Basically anything that would be inconvenient for us was now a rule. We immediately started apartment hunting but it was covid and even the absolute worst places had a 4 month wait list. So we bounced between FIL’s house and my parents house for 4 months then moved out the second there was an opening.

FIL recently bitched to BIL that we “took advantage of him”. My mind is blown. I cleaned that whole disgusting basement myself. Washed all the walls and carpets. There was rotten food *from the prior owner* that we cleaned. Spent money on it. Only to have the rug pulled out from under me. Followed all of his absurd rules. And he had the gall to say we screwed *him* over? He repeatedly asked us to move in because it would benefit him.

Did they acknowledge that it was a Great Depression in the middle of it, or did they backdate it the way they do with recessions?

My understanding is today, a recession is defined by data that is only available after the fact, so in a way it’s not possible for the government to definitively say it:s a recession until it’s already over. Was that the case during the Great Depression, or did they acknowledge it sooner?

I want to put this tree on my neighbors erosion. Good idea, bad idea?

This tree just started growing and I didn’t have the heart to tear it out and now it’s big! My neighbors let us put all their yard waste on their erosion, can I just like dig this up and put it there and it would grow?

People only ever make me feel bad

Just feels like all anyone wants to do is prove they are smarter, more moral, better than you in some way. I love learning. LOVE learning.

I don’t like when people tell me I have absolutely zero basic concept of media literacy just because we disagree on a movie.

I don’t like it when people tell me I need to learn how to understand the basic concept of propaganda just because I said I liked something even if it had certain themes that I don’t necessarily agree with.

Like it’s just so patronizing. Why can’t nuance be accepted. Why am I not allowed to acknowledge I don’t agree with a part of something but still feel that on the whole it’s a good movie or book.

Is this salvageable?

I don’t even know how to start this repair. It’s hard to see but the fascia board needs replaced, it’s all rotten, but it’s what the car port is anchored to. Does the whole thing need to come down? How would you go about this?

Turning a flat roof into a sloped roof

Hi there, the prior owner built this deck “roof” flat with what looks like wood fencing. It creates a situation where all winter snow slowly melts, drips, and turns the whole deck into an ice rink in winter, and this is the primary entrance we use!

My plan is to remove the wood fencing, then just add sloped insulation and corrugated pvc roofing on top. My questions are 1. What type of insulation? I’m really struggling with that. 2. Are there any issues with my plan that I’m not realizing?

Baby showers

Just venting. A baby shower sounds like my own personal hell on earth. Fat, swollen, sweaty, stinky, pregnant, on a thrown, having a bunch of distant family members I don’t even like watching my like a hawk judging every reaction so they can gossip about whether I appeared to be grateful enough or reacted appropriately enough, receiving gifts that no offense I can easily buy myself, then having to hand write dozens of thank you cards. Literally my personal version of hell.
