BREAKING: A secretive 4-month old AI company incorporated in the UK has just raised $500m at a $4bn valuation! 🤯

The startup - Recursive Superintelligence, is building a new kind of AI that teaches itself.

One of the founders, Tim Rocktäschel, is a professor of AI at University College London and was, until very recently, a principal scientist at Google DeepMind.

OpenAI has secured its first permanent office in London, marking a significant expansion of its presence in the UK.

The company has signed an 88,500 square foot space at Regent Quarter in King’s Cross, spanning Jahn Court and the Brassworks Building. The office, developed by Endurance Land, will have capacity for up to 544 team members and is expected to open in 2027.

The expansion of OpenAI’s UK presence reflects demand for its products and supports plans to grow its teams across research, engineering and commercial functions. It also bolsters its plans to establish London as its largest research hub outside of the United States.

“The UK has an incredible depth of talent and a strong track record in AI,” says Phoebe Thacker, global head of data research programmes and London site lead at OpenAI. “London is already a key hub for our research and teams, and this new office gives us the space to keep building here.

“We’re seeing real momentum in how businesses, developers and institutions across the UK are using AI, and we want to support that growth. This investment reflects our long-term commitment to the UK and the role it can play in shaping how AI is developed safely and used to benefit people all over the world.”

Since signing an MOU with the UK government last year, OpenAI has introduced data residency for UK customers, signed agreements with the Ministry of Justice, and is supporting UK SMEs to build AI skills through its SME Accelerator programme.
