reminder to pitch to apple music editorial as well (reupload without band and song name, woops)

we dropped a new song three days ago. not saying that these numbers are huge, but our monthly goal was 1000 streams on spotify, and we’ve hit it on apple music already. we’ve never reached 1000 streams on any song before. this time we landed the "New Releases: Alternative" playlist in basically every country in the world, which is awesome. we’ve even charted in the top 200 for alternative songs in Nepal, pretty unreal. i doubt these numbers will stay up for ages, but either way it’s rad. anyone else had good experiences with apple editorial?

Astoria - Fragment (new post-rock single with vocals, for fans of Sigur Rós, MONO and Low Roar)

we just released our first new song in three years. it’s heavily influenced by post-rock, ending with what is probably the best climax i’ve ever written. here’s a link to listen

thank you so much to everyone who bothers checking it out 🫶

band photos eh

stopped for a little photoshoot while we were filming a music video in iceland a couple years ago. we spent ages on mixing our EP but it’s finally about to come out now, so we can go ahead with our brand makeover hehe

Astoria - Colder Than Before (test press giveaway! for fans of Sigur Rós, MONO, plus shoegaze and electronic influences)

first of all: listening to our own music on vinyl feels so crazy.

we’ve been working on this EP for over three years at this point, and to celebrate that it’s just around the corner we’re giving away one of the test pressings. leave a comment on this Instagram post to join!

Tried Tetsu Kasuya’s ten pour recipe

Brewed a Tim Wendelboe washed Finca Tamana (red and pink Bourbon). Used my ceramic V60. First brew I tried 6.2 on my ZP6.

Very interesting cup, extremely tea-like, probably one of the least bitter brews I’ve ever made, without tasting underextracted. Pretty low acidity too. Very comfortable to drink, but it genuinely felt like drinking white tea or something. Good, but kinda watery and hollow, and as it cooled I noticed a bit of astringency.

Second brew I went down to 5.9 on the ZP6. This one is what I want in my coffee! Still a super clean cup, almost no bitterness in this one either. When you sip you get a hit of bright, balanced acidity, which is pretty immediately taken over by a light sweetness. Highlights the red fruits rather than the winey-ness of this coffee. As it cools the florality is pretty present too.

Weirdly, the first coarser brew had a drawdown time of 3:30, while the finer second one was finished at 3:15. Obviously very limited sample size though, I might have poured differently or something. Clogging is an intentional part of this recipe, but hard to control.

I will say this is a very active recipe that is pretty tedious to do. But it’s also fun to force yourself to stay engaged in the process, so I appreciate it for what it is. Definitely won’t replace my go-to recipe, but I’ll probably brew with this method occasionally as a little fun treat/challenge. I recommend giving it a go!

New dual signal board for ampless post-rock/shoegaze

Haven’t set up all the patch cables yet, but you get the idea. Here’s the order:

Tuner > Fender The Bends Compressor > EHX Canyon > Strymon Nightsky > TC Electronic HOF2 > A/B Splitter

Signal A continues: Boss BD-2 > EHX Green Russian Big muff > Strymon Iridium

Signal B continues: Stonegate FX Buffered Silicon Fuzz Face > Harley Benton American Sound > Behringer Tuner (used as a killswitch for signal B)

The idea is to keep signal A as the main sound, switching between clean, distorted and fuzzy within this signal. Mostly pretty drenched in reverb because I like washy sounds :) Then in the really intense sections, like climaxes, I’ll use the Behringer tuner to unmute signal B, which adds a cranked fuzz face in addition to the already distorted sound. It sounds massive, and the low end-y Big Muff combined with the fuzz face fill each other out really nicely. Really excited to experiment more with this!

anyone familiar with this band? came across them because of a facebook post, randomly decided to give this album a go. and man, it is so good. really scratches the same itch as MONO in many ways, some orchestral elements, very melodic but still noisy. big recommend from me!

as someone who’s in a band that’s about release a single and an EP this summer, i’m curious: when you’re in the mood for discovery, where do you go? and what’s needed for you to actually check out a song/album?

personally i’m really picky about new music, and it usually takes repeated exposure to a band name before i’ll actually bother checking it out. so i’m pretty much the nightmare listener for someone in a band (like myself), woops
