SOUND ON for a pure 90s/00s nostalgia moment 😂
Hey folks! I have no idea if this is allowed, but I'm sure it'll get deleted if not haha. I'm 1/3 of the team working on Murder Meet Cute, an interface drama meets visual novel, where you follow 90s alt chick Amy as she uncovers a murder conspiracy through the computers she fixes on the night shift. The fixing mechanic of the game are nonograms that turn into pixel bugs!
What you see in the gif is the 2nd puzzle in the game. I'm not gonna lie to you and say that you're gonna get the biggest challenge of your life with the puzzles; it's very much interactive fiction first, with puzzles as flair. But, I do think it will be an enjoyable experience for people who like nonograms! The puzzles will get progressively more difficult as you uncover deeper and darker information.
The game has a demo that's available to try if anyone fancies it, and if you wishlist you'll get an email when it's out! https://store.steampowered.com/app/4253020/Murder_Meet_Cute/
Also! If there's anyone here that would fancy playtesting the full game before launch, and giving us feedback on the puzzles, that would extremely cool.
I wasn't sure if I should go with Developer Corner or Rant, but to stay on the safe side, I've went with Developer Corner.
Y'all, I fucking hate marketing. I hate it with the depths of my very being. I hate trying to sell people things, full stop. I hate hate hhhaaaattee that I 'need' to do this. I just want to make silly games that people might find fun and have a good time with. I want to get it in front of peoples eyes so if they see it, and they like it, they can play and have a good time! I got guys over at game marketing subs telling me I need to work on my game in every spare waking hour, and make 5-10 tiktoks a day, and manage a discord, all whilst I work full time. Uhhh, how about no? Absolutely nothing is worth killing yourself over, let alone making a game.
But I also need to to eat, and keep the lights on, if I'm to keep making my silly games. And that means selling it to people. But I point blank refuse to get into manipulation tactics and kill myself over it. It's honestly just the worst.
Certainly doesn't help that there's so many new games constantly cause of AI now, most of them absolute slop. And I absolutely point blank refuse to use AI. I'm here to create something!!! Why on earth would I cut out the literal fun part of it???
i think the real reality is that my days of trying to make substantial projects that I could live off to make more games is numbered. Not because I think we're making bad games but because the market is just a hellscape, and I am not willing to do what is required of me to ensure success. I can't, and won't shove things down peoples throats. And there's only so long I can keep creating at this level around client work. I'm doing my best to uphold work/life balance but it's tough. At some point soon, probably after this project, I'll go back to making small lil things just for fun, when I can.
Right now I'm sharing the game on various sub reddits I think might be interested, but it's one and done. If they liked it, great, if they didn't, I'll move on. Social Media is, truly, the worst, and I don't know how much longer I can keep it up there. I guess I'll see lol.
Anyways, thank you for attending my little rant. I feel like maybe I just need a stop to vent before I continue on right now. But also, when I came across this sub reddit, I realised there probably isn't another space that really gets what I'm feeling about this? Like the conflict between, I love games, and I need to eat and look after myself, but man, do I fucking hate capitalism. Particularly given the current state of the games industry is a direct result of it too. This doesn't need to be this fucking hard, but nooooo, everyones gotta make more money year on year, so lets lay everyone off, and make a thousand games using AI and maximize profits blahh blaaaa. God it's all so brain rotted. We have MORE than enough on this planet to all live comfortably, and instead we're in this mess.
I feel like I've bounced about a bit there, and I don't really expect anyone to actually read this. i could go on, but I'll stop myself there =P
Hey y'all! Been working on a small game for the last year or so that I'd love to share with you all. I'm 1/3 of the team working on Murder Meet Cute, an interface drama meets visual novel, where you follow goth chick Amy as she uncovers a murder conspiracy through the computers she fixes on the night shift. The game will probably sit in around 3-4 hours play time, for a tight narrative experience,
We had a lot of fun adding nods to 90s media and culture with this game, including the feeling of the early internet via ICQ like chats, and internet forums. Even the game UI is based on 90s FMV games =D We also wanted to give players the power fantasy of playing someone in customer service who doesn't take anyones shit, and thus Amy is a strong and loud character (based heavily on Tiffy from raw time lol).
If you like other interface style games, you'll likely enjoy this one. There's a demo available now if you'd like to give it a go for yourself and see if it's for you: https://store.steampowered.com/app/4253020/Murder_Meet_Cute/
Sup, hopefully this is allowed. I'm 1/3 of a small indie team working on our game Murder Meet Cute, and I thought this would be fun to show the kind of inspirations we've had into the game. I've been pretty vague about what exactly about each game has influenced us, but that's partly because it's also kinda hard to define. The game is obviously not a FMV, but the style of the shop part of the game and how the backgrounds/characters look has been. The UI is also somewhat influenced by it, as well as old school VHS tapes.
The overall influences are also so much more. Movies, TV, books, living through 90s culture. Also true crime dramas lol.
Anyways hopefully some folks found this interesting! Happy to answer questions.
As the title states, I'm 1/3 of a team working on an indie video game set in the 90s, and part of the game is investigating other peoples computers. Part of that is irl photos so I've spent the better part of a year slowly building up photos from friends, family and beyond, to include on folks machines. Here's just a snippet that I thought I'd share here because they're such a vibe! (Cat tax at the end)

Hello everyone! We've just released the demo for our game here on Itch.io. Murder Meet Cute is a 90s FMV inspired interface drama, where you play as a 90s snarky goth chick who fixes computers on the night shift. Chat with friends, tell customers were to shove it, and uncover a murder conspiracy? All in a days work.
This has been worked on for about a year with a group of 3 people. We've worked remotely in our spare time around client work to make it happen. It's been a labor of love, so we're super excited to see what folks think of it!
I bought this JVC gr-d240e and I'm having issues finding an AV cable to connect to my machine. One option is I can buy a fireware card and cable, but I believe the driver info for this hasn't been updated past windows 8 so it still may not work. My idea instead was to use an AV lead to connect to one of those USB converters, which means OBS would pick it up like any other cam. But for the life of me I can not find that kind of AV port anywhere. Anyone with any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!
Hey PC Games! I'm here today to tell you about InterfaceX26, what it's about, and my experience of it.
InterfaceX26 is a new festival aiming to put Interface (or Fake OS) games on the map as their own genre. We've got the steam festival, a showcase happening on Saturday, and a game tagging initiative to try and get steam to add a new tag for these games.
Our title was accepted as one of the games, but I've never been involved in anything like this! It has quickly turned into one of the most wholesome communities I've ever been apart of!. Faye (Dear Agony Aunt!) over here says it much better than I could.
There's also an overwhelming presence of women and nb led developers in this space that I wasn't aware of and I really want to give them a shout out:
Lastly, as marketing is something I find a bit soul destroying, I decided to organise some fun alternatives, one of them being an old school 90s webring! You can see it in action on our website - as well as a bit of a puzzle to figure out!
This has been such a great experience, and I hope folks here find interest in these games as much as we do!
