Good shit found here

Just wanted to return to the sub with bands I was either directly or indirectly recommended here that did in fact, slap super hard.

Not necessarily my favorite albums (I just screenshot the first thing I saw in my Spotify from them) but that Malignancy and Hail Spirit Noir album are definitely my favorites from their respective discography

Also willing to take recommendations about things yall are excited about. Doesn’t have to be like the ones mentioned but I’d prefer a description of it before I start listening

Today I listened to the last Isis song for the first time

I’m always listening to new music and post metal has been a relatively recent kick. Was always into bands like Pelican, God is An Astronaut, and Russian Circles but I wanted to expand.

Isis was a shining star amidst some pretty whatever music I’ve been working through. I actually tried to listen to them once 10 years ago but dropped it. I don’t regret it though; I think there was no time to truly discover them than now. They brought more dynamic to the table that I find bands like Neurosis and Cult of Luna are missing.

Recommendations?

There’s a few anomalies here. I’ve been listening to a lot of new music. Samael, cannibal corpse, and Thou probably only show up because I listened to their full discography which is pretty extensive. Likewise Nirvana probably only shows because there’s not a lot that I listen to that falls into that tier

$166 out the door

Cracking them “as we speak.”

I was not the biggest fan of the special reserve and the 12 year was only mildly better but the CYPB is fantastic. Sweet spicy and fruity. My problem was the the prior two had much more bitter earthy notes, but after I got a taster of antique 107 and saw these prices, I figured I’d pull the trigger

Adam Jensen the Tragic Hero and where I saw things going

I imagine nothing I say here will be all that unique, but it’s something I always think of whenever I remember Deus Ex.

I don’t think all media should be like this, but there is nothing more gripping than a bittersweet unfulfilling ending/narrative. Nothing triggers those dopamine receptors like the longing for victory.

I think Adam’s story triggers that from the very beginning, though we (and him) may not recognize it.
“I didn’t ask for this.” His life is upended , and he effectively ceases to exist, driven only by his ideals and his pursuit of truth and justice. I mean, he’s so far down the rabbit hole that his career is just a facade as a means to an end.

Now what if he “succeeds?” According to the original, he doesn’t but I’d like to imagine that it gets a bit of a retcon. It was a product of its time and I don’t think the 90’s/early 00’s cheese holds up well.

So, then what? He dispenses justice on the illuminati and feels happy/relieved? No, he’s probably filled with existential dread. Removing the illuminati’s control frees everyone…to continue to be bigots, commit human rights violations, engage in weapons trade and war, etc.

Logically, he realizes he can’t win. He can’t be happy, knowing he’s years late to stopping the initial tragedy before he knew what was happening, and all the ones after. But if he stops here, the cycle repeats. So he chooses to be a hypocrite because his ideals drove his pursuit of the illuminati and not the other way around. No one likes the sound of a shadowy ruler of the world but everyone thinks a benevolent ruler is better than none.

Adam merges with the finished Hyron Project, effectively becoming the Machine God and AI central to whatever plot may follow. And while you might feel bad for him, you don’t protest this outcome because you know deep down inside that this was the only path for him. His human agency was stripped away long ago, and he became ideology made flesh. With this, his ideals are immortalized. Best he could get really.

I suppose life imitates art, what with the development purgatory the series is in. We don’t get that fulfillment of seeing the story to the end, but we also know it won’t end well.

Oddly intriguing pimple pop

This post isn’t for everyone, but I know some people take great satisfaction in pimple popping whether it’s their own or videos.

I had a small but mildly painful one under my mustache. When I got home I gave it a light squeeze and it was one of those explosive pops.

Naturally, I go to wipe the tiny speck of that good stuff off the mirror to see that it had launched a single hair out with it.

I’m not crazy about all that pimple popping stuff, but even I was a little tickled to see it.

PTO taken away

Location: California

My partner just told me her company is no longer offering PTO to anyone that has worked there for less than 2 years.

They previously had PTO and used it. Now they’re told they have a negative PTO balance. I’m not sure if the negative balance is something they would attempt to garnish in the event that they leave the company. It may just be a way to delay the accrual of PTO.

It seems incredibly shady. Is any of this legal?

I make the best grilled cheese

The picture doesn’t do it full justice. It’s like the one thing I’m really good at. It’s the only time I surpassed my teacher (my dad) at a skill.

It’s the one thing I’ll never half ass. I only make it for the people in my life that really matter, otherwise I’d probably be known as the grilled cheese bitch slaving away in the kitchen.

I want everyone to enjoy them though, so here’s how to make it for you and your loved ones:

Recommended bread: sourdough, rye, potato bread

Recommended cheese: pepper jack or any spiced alternatives, baby Swiss, havarti

I usually layer the cheese only one slice thick, a little overlap is ideal if your bread is too big for one slice.

While it would be fun to say the secret ingredient is love, it’s actually garlic. Mince 1-2 cloves to put in the sandwich depending on how much you like it.

Instead of butter, I baste the bread with salted olive oil. Herbs are optional but I like to add thyme or dill. It adds a little flavor and makes it look a bit more artisanal. Just be careful with the heat, it will burn sooner than the bread and you’ll end up with the burnt toast flavor even if you don’t burn the bread.

I usually cook on medium until you get that perfect golden toast, but it’s to taste. Usually takes about 5 minutes but you’ll know when it’s ready to flip from the sizzling.

Pairs well with lager, ipa, or ginger ale.

Death metal

Death metal was my main squeeze but I’ve been on a sludge/post metal kick. Looking to diversify my new music playlist a bit more with some new death metal.

I prefer groovier/chuggier death metal. Nothing specifically against old school DM but I hate skank beats and overly wanky sweep picking tech death.

Bands I like include Decapitated, Dyscarnate, psycroptic, Gorguts, cattle decapitation, and probably half of what will get recommended to me so share the deep cuts.

Grabbed the last pack

I haven’t had many pickle beers (in fact the only one I can remember is Athletic’s N/A pickle beer which I really liked) but this wasn’t quite what I was expecting.

I’ve never had Grillo’s pickles so this isn’t a dig at them (might taste better in pickle form) but it was more salty than sour and it had a distinct almost chemical note that I associate with mesquite bbq chips.

Still enjoyable but now I’m thinking if I ever want a pickle beer I ought to just pour some brine from my preferred pickle brand in a regular PBR

Taking the plunge, need the quintessentials on bebop, smooth jazz, and avant garde

Hey all, I’ve always enjoyed jazz but found it daunting to sort through given how deep the rabbit hole goes.

I’m looking for some places to start with bebop, smooth/cool jazz, fusion, and experimental/avant garde.

I come from a metal background so this journey is being inspired by the likes of Mr. Bungle, Mamaleek, and White Ward. Certainly no stranger to the experimental side.

Thanks!

My partner went to Korea and brought back a mix pack of beer from Whasoo Brewery in Gyeong-ju

I’ve never heard of a weizen bock but it tastes just like it sounds: banana, clove, and a hint of chocolate bread.
Interesting color too, like an unclarified apple cider
