Machinist Squares Oil

Received a set of machinist squares the other day and I’m disappointed with the amount of oil on them.

But I’d be more disappointed if they rusted.

Wondering if I cleaned them up and use MD 40 Specialist Dry Lube or Bostic Glide Coat if those are effective against rust.

Another option would be aluminum machineist squares, but I haven’t been able to find any.

Router bit for sled

I’m assuming that in a router sled a large bit is going to be faster for slab flattening than a smaller bit.

What size bit could a ½” 2¼ HP router reasonably handle ?

And I’ve never done this before, so any advice is appreciated.

How flat do we really need ?

I have a DeWalt 10” contractor table saw. The fence doesn’t pass that often seen test of not seeing light against a know flat edge.

My flat surface is a TayTools 38” Aluminum Straight Edge.

So I got a TSO fence and it doesn’t pass the light test either - but it is better.

But I can’t slide a piece of paper between the TSO and the straight edge.

This makes me think the light test is overkill.

Thoughts ?

Slow bathroom sink drain

Lived in this 101 yr old house for a couple of years. Plumbing is in good condition and haven’t had any problems with the pipes.

A bathroom sink always seemed to drain slowly by which I mean it would fill, maybe an inch or two, and bubble slightly before draining. The sink next to it is hardly ever used but not have any issues.

Recently it got notably worse. Checked the trap and it was clean. Removed the drain pipe under cabinet and pushed some of those cheap Chinese spiked sticks as far as they would go. Nothing came out.

Thinking I’d have to snake the drain got a Milwaukee M12 Drain Snake. The tool worked pretty good but despite several tries never got it very far. It’s has a 5/16" x 25' bulb cable. The drain runs somewhat better than it did. The cable may have loosened some blockage but nothing came out on the bulb.

So wondering what else I can do about this. Perhaps a lighter weight snake to get past a bend in the pipe? Thinking a safe for PVC chemical would be best. I think Mr. Plumber kinds of chemicals are only effective for trap clogs but I don’t actually know.

Open to ideas from those of you that know more than me.

Riving Knife Adjustment

I have been trying to adjust the riving knife on my new DWE7491. No luck. DeWalt's instructions aren't very helpful other than saying "loosen two big screws and then adjust three little screws".

But how ?

Experimenting is just making the alignment worse. And it's slow going due to the small space to get my hand into.

Can't do anything about the size of my hands but I am going to go get some longer hex wrenches.

Sawdust Blower

Can someone recommend a small handheld blower to remove sawdus ? The big brands, such as Milwaukee, just seem to have small leaf blowers. That’s bigger than what I’m thinking about.

I don’t get much snow, still, I’d like it gone.

Trying to decide which Ego would be best. Either the 12” Snow Shovel SNS1200 or the Multi-Head Snow Shovel SSA1200 which reviews tend to favor.

Does anyone have experience with how either of these will handle a wooden deck ? Tear it up ? Snow is temporary but a loused up deck is permanent.

I had years ago a set of chisels - I didn’t end up doing much with them. I’d now like to get a good set as I’m decided to take woodworking seriously. I’ve heard good things about Narex but there are different kinds and I don’t know what the differences are or which would be better for me. I don’t want to be disappointed. I don’t want to fight them or wonder if a poor choice is now holding me back.

I’m seeing these types…

- Richter Extra: Cryogenic treatment, premium materials, highest price

- Premium: Chrome-manganese steel, quality handles, good value

- Professional: Durable construction, moderate pricing

- Mortise: Specialized for chopping joints, thicker blades
