Oldschool habits

What do you consider to be old school nursing or care work habits? I hear people talk about “back in my day” but no one ever says what that actually entails.

What behaviours do you pick up on that lets you know someone has been in the game for a long time? Could be significant or subtle. What would you like to come back and which habits do you want to see stuck in the past?

What do you notice in higher class people that you dislike?

For those who are “culturally” poor so to speak, what about the higher classes do you NOT wish you had?

It appears to me in a lot of middle class families- they are obsessed with having “connections” and you talk to people and make friends in order to get to higher places or get your kids into a better school or get a family member a certain job. Also a lot of higher class jobs have a lot of nepotism: you get there because you know a guy not because you have the skills.

Neurodiverse nursing student here, AMA!

This is purely to talk about my experience as a mental health/ psychiatric nursing student living with autism.

I will not be giving professional or medical advice so i can’t answer questions such as “my family member is like this… could she have xyz”

I also currently work part time in complex needs/ learning disability services.

For patient dignity i wouldn’t be answering “what’s the craziest thing you’ve seen” type questions

Imperfect biscuits

Does anywhere still do them massive boxes of imperfect looking but otherwise fine biscuits? I used to see those all the time as a kid but can never find them now.

Tips for autistic student nurse

I was wondering if any of you have advice for a student nurse who was just diagnosed with autism? Preferably advice around getting along with coworkers and professionalism. I find it really difficult to do small talk and get along and know what questions to ask to mentors. Especially when they ask me something like “what do you hope to see or do here while you’re on placement?” I always think they want me to say something specific but i don’t know what it is and by their reactions i feel like i always give the wrong answer. Or when they ask me to reflect on my learning on the spot.

I’m starting my 3rd year of mental health nursing so it is really important that i know how to communicate with coworkers and it seems every interaction is being assessed no matter how small it is. I dont really know how to interact with people who aren’t friends or family and i find it really difficult to gauge how professional/ formal or informal to be.

Please help me feel less like the spongebob “hi im normal” scene!

Putting paper towels down the toilet

It feels like every bathroom I go to there’s a sign asking people not to put paper towels down the toilet… I have never once had any need to put paper towels in anywhere except the bin.

In my work it’s dreadful and breaks the toilet and people have been doing it for years even though there is plenty
toilet roll available

Why do people do this?

What can mental health nurses do to help?

Remove if not allowed. Please do not read or reply if mental hospitals, sectioning, professionals etc are triggering for you!

I am training to be a mental health nurse and unfortunately my course does not give enough talks from people who have come out of being sectioned on what we could do differently. I will not be high up enough to change policies so i am looking for what i can do on an individual professional level as i don’t want to exist in an echochamber of other professionals. What can i as one person do differently?

People who have been adopted in the UK, what do you wish could have been different?

I am looking to adopt in the UK but i am looking for perspectives of adoptees on what they wish their adoptive parents did differently. Do you wish you were fostered instead? do you wish you remained with your birth parents? should adoption never be a thing? I asked on the r/ adoption subreddit and they were not happy so i will ask here.

I want to adopt

I am looking to adopt when I am older (i’m 23 and in uni so not right now) I have read a lot about the pains of being adopted. I hope to facilitate open adoptions (children are still able to see their birth parents if they so wish to). What can I do as an adoptive parent to lessen the pain? What do you wish your adoptive parents did?

Edit: I am mostly hoping to gain perspectives and experiences from adoptees in the UK/ Ireland as that is where i’m from!

Aleppo and nabulsi soap in UK?

Looking for places online to get aleppo and nabulsi soap in the UK, not from Amazon. Preferably small companies that directly support the Syrian and Palestinian producers.

Terminology for patients

what is your opinion on the terminology changes when referring to patients? In the UK at least we are shifting towards calling them “service users” or “clients”

In my opinion if we are trying to normalise mental health as being treated the same as physical heath, i don’t understand why we must tip toe around the word “patient”, especially because we are nurses, not licensed therapists

What has been your experience? do your patients prefer being called something else?

Staying with a partner?

I was wondering if it’s considered a sin to stay over at a partners house in the same room (separate beds) for a night or two? We are long distance with bad public transport. Is it considered co-habitation? I haven’t really found a concrete answer for this. Thanks in advance for any answers!

Aging stains

What would you use to treat “aging” stains? I don’t really know how to describe it other than the type of stains on an old wedding dress. I’ve tried oxygen bleach powder and an enzyme stick
