My Odin 3 + Thor experience

Hi everyone,

I always said I was going to do a write up to help anyone decide between the AYN Thor and AYN Odin 3.

Before going into my experience I think it might be valuable to give you all some context so you might filter out my unconcious biases.

Basically, I started off thinking I was going to pick one of the Odin or Thor.
I would class myself as someone who does proper due dilligence work before making a purchase.

After weighing up both devices I went for the Odin 3 due to its raw power and compact size (in comparison to my Steam Deck).

It must have been 8 weeks after getting my hands on the Odin that I managed to convince myself to also go for the Thor because of its unique form factor, screen and the maturity of the 8 gen 2 chipset.

I’m blessed to be in a financial position that allowed me to go for the Thor without having to worry about it.

So now it begins I hear you say.. The comparisons begins.

Not... yet.

The Odin 3 was the first Android handheld I had to set up. I took my time, watched videos, went through guides to finally land on the aesthetic I feel fits my Odin 3 best (more on that later).

This experience made setting up the Thor more enjoyable as I'd gone through this once before. The only nuance here is that some apps required some tweaks that are specifically tailored to the dual screen experience.

It took my brain some time to adjust to autopilot through navigating both screens (if that makes sense) but all in all that went pretty smoothly.

So NOW.. the comparisons begin.

There's been loads of ink that has flown towards the specs, the peak capabilities of these devices, 12 GB of RAM vs 16/24 GB of RAM, etc etc.

I don't think I'll be doing anyone, any favours by adding my voice to that.

Rather than doing that I would much rather tell you which feeling both devices give me.

Let's start with the Thor: I would really describe the Thor as my comfort device. Shiny hunting for a Pokemon has never been this enjoyable. I just boot up my ROM to the bottom screen and load up a YouTube video on the main screen. A truly golden experience.

The Thor takes me back to the 3DS era. Everything breathes simplicity and that’s really how I would describe my setup: simple.

So far I haven't used it to play any AAA titles. It's been there as a tool to just switch off, to consume the content I want and most importantly, at the pace I want.

Don't get it twisted though. My Pro model can pack a punch when I want it to. It's just not something I have associated with my Thor... yet.

The Thor is the device I grab when I know I'l be conversing with my Partner while playing or when I know I won't have much time on my hands. It's a device that doesn't mind being picked up and put away, almost as quickly as I picked it up.

My Odin 3 experience is quite different.
This is the device I gravitate to when I want to be immersed.

I'm currently playing The Witcher 3 on it and wow it just clicks on this machine.
You'll never see me playing my Odin 3 without a set of headphones on, taking in every inch of the game I'm playing.

Everything about my Odin 3 is setup to boot and get into a game as quickly as possible with minimal aesthetics distracting me from what this machine is meant to do.

I've set it up with Beacon and for me and my goal it's the dream frontend for my Odin 3.

The horizontal form factor puts me into "gaming mode" faster than the Thor does if that makes sense.

As soon as I hold it I know I'm going for a trip into the world of the game I'm playing.

I could go on and on just to say this: I wouldn't want to sell any one of these. Due to my nature, the decision to get the Thor was well considered and it has a unique place in my collection. It does something for me that the Odin 3 could never do for me and the Odin 3 has to same effect on me when compared to the Thor.

However, I'm not going to pussy out of picking one over the other.

Knowing what I know, what would I end up picking if I didn't own any of these and wasn't in a financial position to get both?

I'd pick the Odin 3 because it drives me to do the thing we all bought this thing for in the first place. Gaming.

It's the immersion that does it for me and that was the deciding factor for my choice.

I hope this write up was useful for anyone and I'm happy to answer any more questions in the comments.

Happy gaming lads and lasses!

Is this still best practice?

I put that insert in before closing the lid.

[Repost incl. device names] Don’t be like me and get put off by the thought of setting up Syncthing. Can’t believe I waited so long to do this

https://preview.redd.it/3n9gyhqq4fch1.png?width=1080&format=png&auto=webp&s=a4e4be39987efb01a5831aa72717c7752f5cfbc5

I was put off so long by setting SyncThing up because funnily enough and stupidly I was going off the video length on the Retro Game Corps video (45 min) and thought “nah I’m good, I’ll manually transfer files”. I finally got the courage to set this up today and I was done in 15 min tops LMAO. I only have Android devices which I emulate on so it was a tiny portion of the video. I can’t believe I missed out for so long!

I feel silly for asking (sorry) but for the life of me can’t find this location anywhere.

Hi guys,

I was exploring (this is my first run) and found these broken ruins and beat a wraith that appeared.
There were 3 question marks on the map and I can’t get those 2 others to pop up if that makes sense..

Anyone know how to proceed?

Thanks for helping a noob out!

Steam Deck maintenance

Hi guys,
Like everyone I learned about the price increase and looked at my LCD device I got 4 years ago and said “you’ve got another 5 to go bro”.

I’m what you would describe as a clumsy person so I’m quite scared about opening up the system and tinkering. Having said that, I did upgrade my 64GB model to a 1TB model so I guess I’m not totally hopeless.

I wanted to ask you handy guys and gals what you do to ensure a long lifespan on your Deck. I have never really maintained it except for cleaning the shell.

What are some best practices and especially some low hanging fruit I can consider doing?

Who would you pick as the 6th member of a Dragon/Dragonlike team?

As a kid I always wanted to be a dragon trainer. This has made me want to do a fresh run on this game after 15+ years.

I was thinking of going:

- Charizard
- Gyarados
- Dragonite
- Aerodactyl
- Seadra (Kingdra is post E4 iirc)
- ?

As it stands, I’m looking at going for Dragonair because I can’t sell Lapras as a dragon in my mind, lol.

Who would you all pick in my stead?

Am I… Ever leaving White Orchard?

So, I’ve had The Witcher 3 in my backlog like forever. I had played bits and pieces here and there but never got hooked.

This time around I wanted to give the game one last chance but this time I would take things slow and not rush through the main quest.

Happy to say I’m HOOKED. I can’t believe I slept on this game. The funny part is I wouldn’t even say I enjoy exploring yet here I am trying to take as much in as I can.

It makes me so excited for what this game has to offer going forward and I’m quite certain I’ll end up putting more than 100 hours into this.

It’s outrageous how I got all this content for 15 euros.

It’s a tiny detail but turn off the HUD after tinkering guys and gals!

After making sure you’ve got the desired FPS and Temps, you should turn off the HUD to enjoy the game in its full glory without worrying about tiny dips that you don’t notice anyway while being immersed in a game.

Game: Witcher 3 complete edition (PC)
Emulator: Gamehub 6.0.4
Settings: Got them from Emuready

Can't believe how much the Odin 3 has made me enjoy Switch emulation

I used to have a Switch OLED and really loved it but the device just had one flaw for me and that was the handheld experience.

What I enjoy so much about the Odin 3 is that I'm able to have a docked experience while playing in handheld mode. I remember playing Witcher 3 on it and simply couldn't get over how blurry the graphics were.

The Witcher 3 Switch port is what I would class as a miracle port. The quality of port here is absolutely incredible. What a game. I sunk some hours into the opening area and still exploring and having a blast. I really recommend playing this on Switch. It's a solid experience. It's locked at 30 FPS and never dips. 10/10 experience.

Game: The Witcher 3

Device: Odin 3 - Ultra

EDIT:

Emulator: Eden

Driver: Mr Purple T28 Toasted

Can we get a pinned post for shipping questions?

Every day we get the same questions about shipping times and shipping experience while these questions could be solved with a quick search.

It’d be really useful if there was a pinned post for this so people can ask their questions there and these posts just get deleted by the mods

How are you balancing teaching direct reports skills while AI is coming and here to stay?

Hi all,

Basically, I find myself asking myself more and more how I should approach teaching junior employees new things. Sometimes, I'll be like "it's important to show them a complete process from scratch" and other times I'm like "Hmm, AI is here to stay so might as well guide them through my prompting process and only give them the bits of insights I deem necessary to get this task done".

I'm finding it increasingly difficult in finding a sweet spot between efficiently passing on expertise and giving them the complete picture on certain subject matters. There are many grey areas if you will.

I was wondering if any of you have come across this and if there's a framework you use to determine how deep you must go in passing on knowledge or expertise.

Is there a PKSM (Pokemon Save Manager) equivalent on Android?

Basically, if you don't know what PKSM is. It's a homebrew app that allows save management in pokemon games (gen 1-7).

A place to store pokemon, inject events, inject items, export save files, inject save files, etc.

As I'm now moving more towards emulation on Android I was wondering if there's an equivalent of that on Android and if not, how you guys are managing save files efficiently.

Thanks!

I’ve been playing through Jedi Fallen Order and it was an enjoyable yet pretty unstable experience.

I just updated Gamenative and tried Proton 11 and wow i’m getting mostly 30 fps with some dips to 25 fps.

It’s just so fun to see these updates coming out and constantly feeling like you’ve got a brand new handheld in your hands.
