SD44: Need Tutorials on Tactics

Okay, I have learned enough about the mechanics to move my units around. Now I need to learn where to send them and why.

Can you guys recommend YT channels that offer indepth explanations on where to position your various units for maximum effect? I think VulcanHDGaming and Stealth17 have some on this very topic that I will start going through. Is there anyone else?

Just to be clear, the source doesn't have to be on YT. I'll be grateful for written explanations of small unit tactics.

Typo repaired.

Steel Division 2 Confusion

I have been slowly learning the Eugen mechanics with SD 44. Last night I fired up SD 2 and tried a small map skirmish.

I assumed all the maps were eastern front based on their names. To my confusion, after picking the Russian side, I found myself playing with a British BG. The unit markers were red, but the units were British. Talk about confusing.

There weren't any Russian BGs in the drop-down menu of BG options.

Do I need to create a Russian BG if I want to play as the Russians with a Russian BG?

Is this the default setting of the game, or did I miss something when I was selecting my side and BG?

[TOMT] [B&W Music Video] This post-apocalyptic video was very popular with the Peak Oil crowd in the 2010s.

Picture a grainy B&W video showing rural ruins in the midwest after Peak Oil had collapsed civilization. I think there were shots of dead oil rigs included, so parts may have been shot in TX and OK. Picture the "dustbowl" of the depression to get a sense of the video imagery.

What really stands out in my memory after 20 or 25 years is the voiceover describing the scenes. It's the gravelly voice of an old man who grew up before the collapse and now has to struggle to survive the current state of the world.

I call it a music video because there is some very fitting music that captures the essence of this nightmare world. However, it's important to understand that the man doing the voiceover is not singing. He is speaking and merely recounting the story of how the world ended up this way.

I have a vague feeling that the video might have been produced by the band playing the eerie background music. However, I doubt the old gent supplying the voiceover was anything more than the absolutely perfect voice artist hired to narrate the story.

The funny thing is that the apocalyptic event that led to the collapse may not have been about Peak Oil at all but a generic civilizational collapse. Either way, it was very popular with Peak Oilers.

I want to hear that old man's voice again after a quarter of a century.

All in all, it was a brilliant product that made you stop and think about fossil fuels.

[TOMT] I am looking for a word that could be a synonym for one's "surrounding area."

If I'm not hallucinating, the word begins with the letter "e". I have searched for synonyms of environment and have concluded that synonyms of the "surrounding area" might offer a better bet for finding this word. However, still no luck in finding it.

Here are two examples of how this mystery word has been used.

I use "e_____" as a placeholder for this mystery word.

  1. A few months ago I arranged for pickup of my groceries. They came with a list of how to handle the various items.

Milk: Refrigerate immediately.

Other liquid: Safe to keep at e______ temperature.

  1. Many years ago I came across this word in a novel whose name I can no longer recall. In one part, it describes all the e______ dirt that accumulates under your fingernails and on your body when you're living outdoors.

So the word is connected to one's environment or surroundings. I'm pretty sure it starts with "e".

~

EDIT

SOLVED. The first responder to suggest ambient wins the point.

I was wrong about the word starting with "e".

Thank you to everyone who suggested a word.

Crusader Kings II on Steam: The Free Version is in German!

I wanted to try version CK: II but can't figure out how to turn it into English. I can't find the settings when everything is in German.

Any suggestions?

Edit

No idea how I missed the language choice part.

I will reinstall it.

Edit

Reinstalled on a different drive and it's still in German.

Looks like I won't be playing CK II.

Noob Question re Mortars in Tutorial

I have gone through the in-game tutorials and learned the basic mechanics.

However, after 8 attempts at learning how to use mortars, I am a dismal failure.

I move the 2 mortar units into range (hopefully as range is unclear) and then when I press "fire" the mortars do not fire.

Instead, the mortar unit starts moving towards the spot I aimed them at.

I can now use howitzers, tanks, ATGMs, and send in airstrikes, etc. I can deliver infantry to the right location and have the Bradley's unload them.

HOWEVER I CANNOT FIRE MY MORTARS! Every time I try, the mortar unit rushes towards the target area I aimed them at.

It doesn't look as if I need to unload the mortar units before using them, so that's not the problem.

Please help me.

Are the Game Mechanics the Same for Most Eugen Games?

Last year I purchased Airland Battle, Red Dragon, and then Warno all on sale. I recently began going through the Warno internal tutorials.

Once I have mastered the Warno basics, will I be able to play Airland and Red Dragon as well? Or is there a big difference in the mechanics?

Since we are on a roll here, what about the two Steel Divisions which I also have but have never gotten around to playing? Are the mechanics different or similar?

Why haven't I played any of the 5 yet? I have purchased over 50 games since 2024 and it's just easier to fire up a game I do know how to play, when I have an evening free than going through tutorials and manuals.

Is there a strategy game based on the ancient Greek city-states?

Total War Saga: THRONES OF BRITANNIA is along the lines of what I am looking for. However, I want a game with more than just fighting. I want something with politics as well as political intrigue. For example, think of Crusader Kings.

I just found out there were about one thousand Greek city-states. This estimate is hard to believe considering the population level back then.

I'd happily settle for a game where the top 6 city-states are playable.

Does anyone know of a game that might match my wishlist?

If you get the permanent ban for refusing to give them your DL or passport, do you release any funds left in the account?

Or do they keep them?

Questions re Naval Maps in Strategic Command: War in the Pacific

This is a corner of the Solomons Campaign map in the game.

https://i.imgur.com/dqRoOiT.png

  1. How does the vertical "map break" work? I am trying to send ships through it, but once they hit it, they just stop. This applies to traffic in both directions.

  2. What are those two groups of hexes tagged with the names of island groups? I can't deploy any new unit/ship arrivals in them. So what are they for? I first thought they were like Star Trek's teleporter. You drop the unit/ship into one of the hexes and a turn or two later it appears in the desired island location.

I watched a detailed YT tutorial on naval combat in this game, but these two map features were ignored.

Yes, I am new to SC games.

I have used PayPal for 26 years as my payment processor for a small sideline business. Over those years I have had at most 5 disputes with customers.

I had one recently because PayPal failed to notify me of a sale. It took me 3 days to find out. PayPal did send me the dispute notice.

T then immediately delivered the digital product and the customer resent me the payment.

THEN THE NIGHTMARE BEGAN.

A few days later I start receiving email threatening to lock my account if I don't supply photo ID such as a DL and/or passport to them. They also ask many more question such as proof that I have a supplier for the items I sell. They want documents proving that I have supplier and that I pay them.

It's a goddamn ebook, I wrote, you cretins. What suppliers?

So far two Paypal customer support people have told me that they have all the info they need and that my account will be restored.

Well it's been 10 days withOUT official word by email that my account has had all privileges restored.

Calling them is maddening because about the only way to get past the AI is by screaming "PUT ME THROUGH TO A HUMAN BEING!"

I am seriously looking at switching to another service.

EDIT

They confirmed just now that without a DL/passport, I can kiss the account good-bye.
