Did early humans practice mercy killing in cases of extreme suffering?

Do we have evidence that, in cases of terminal illness, severe birth defects, or fatal injury, prehistoric humans would intentionally kill others (or themselves) to prevent suffering? If so, when did this develop? Is it a known behavior in any hominids besides modern humans?

What do you want to see Westerners doing to help people in high-poverty, high-conflict regions of Africa?

Many Western charities are colonialism in disguise, or tourism and white saviorism wrapped up as charity. What are some of the organizations and actions, if any, that you’ve seen from Westerners that have actually benefited the people most in need? Please include your country in the response.

Preservation of old style chihuahuas?

I understand that the original breed that gave rise to the chihuahua, the techichi, is extinct. But are there ethical breeders who are specifically aim to try to preserve the chihuahua’s pre-columbian heritage and traits associated with the earliest chihuahuas, like yellow coloration, “deer head” skull shape, and the pre-Colombian haplotype?

It seems like other old breeds have breeders who try to conserve older traits but there’s a lot of hyper-typing in chihuahuas and the traits inherited from European dogs are encouraged.

ETA: not asking for referrals for breeders, just discussion about whether preservation breeding is happening.

Small Malinois lines?

I saw a pair of absolutely gorgeous Malinois at a Fast CAT event who were much smaller than normal for the breed. They were border collie sized, maybe 30 lbs. I’m certain that they were purebreds and the owner mentioned that they came from a smaller sporting line and were titled in agility, but I didn’t catch the name of the line or breeder.

Is there a specific term for smaller lines of Mal?

ELI5 how an old-fashioned landline phone works

How did dialing a number actually route it to the correct phone before computers? How did landlines work when the electricity was out? And most importantly, how did the sound get through?

When and why did humans develop facial hair as a secondary sexual characteristic?

When did humans (or hominids, more broadly) start getting beards, and when it became a trait associated almost exclusively with adult males? And why do we have this trait?

Were there failed revolutions against British rule?

65 countries have declared independence from Great Britain, and the UK is now reduced to just England, Scotland, Wales, and Northern Ireland.

That’s a lot of losses for the Crown. Were there any attempted rebellions against British rule that ended in *victory* for the Brits?

Letting little girl play and exercise in just a sports bra?

I live in the South and it is HOT. My 9-year-old thinks it’s unfair that boys in our neighborhood can play without a shirt and I agree but that’s the world we live in. She is not even close to developing yet and is tiny for her age. She sees me do yard work and exercise in a sports bra and asked if I can get her sports bras so she can play outside and ride her bike without a shirt and still be covered. I’m on the fence. I know it’s hypocritical to tell her that she needs to wear an actual shirt when I don’t, and don’t want to give her a complex by making her think that she needs to cover herself up, but I still just feel kind of weird about the idea of neighbors seeing her without a proper shirt on. What would you do?

Did racists in the segregated South (US) generally admit to being racist?

At least these days, it’s pretty rare for someone to actually identify themselves as a racist. Was the same true in the U.S. South under Jim Crow laws?

When protesting desegregation and harassing civil rights activists, did they claim that they weren’t actually racist or do some kind of mental gymnastics to convince themselves and others that segregation actually served some kind of purpose? Or was it socially acceptable in that era to simply call oneself a racist or white supremacist?

When did humans discover fossils?

I’m sure people *found* fossils starting in prehistory, but when did we actually understand what fossils were? Were ancient people able to discern between an actual fossil (made of stone) and a regular bone? What about things like fossils in the form of footprints and leaf impressions? Did we initially think that imprints in stone were made by creatures that were unimaginably heavy, or by supernatural forces? When did we learn otherwise?

Boyfriend’s condo won’t allow cats

I love how she gave a content warning, like this is so distressing and triggering, before this post. In the comments she clarified that her task-trained service animals are two cats.

I wouldn’t want to live in an HOA that doesn’t allow pets but her boyfriend literally signed up for it.

Is Native religion really that rare?

I was surprised to read that only .02% of Mexicans practice native religions according to fhe 2010 census. That’s very surprising to me since almost 20% of the population of Mexico identifies as indigenous. Are these numbers actually accurate? I knew that most of Mexico was converted to Christianity centuries ago but didn’t realize that indigenous religions were nearly extinct.

Where and when did the idea of protecting civilians during war develop?

Even prior to modern international law, I believe there was a fairly solid global understanding that war is meant to be waged between combatants, and that non-combatants, and especially children, should not die in war.

Obviously those guidelines have been violated often throughout history and continuing into the present day, but I believe that if you ask most people if it’s okay to kill an unarmed bystander in war, they would say no.

When and where did humanity reach this loose understanding of the rules of war?

Feeling insecure about having multiples when my wife can’t/doesn’t

We’re probably not the only WLW like this… I love our sex life but I feel selfish and insecure about the fact that my wife regularly gives me back-to-back orgasms, often five or more and lasting a very long time, and meanwhile she climaxes one time for a few seconds and that’s it.

She says she thinks she just isn’t biologically capable of multiples or of super long-lasting orgasms and she loves sex with me and feels very satisfied.

I don’t think it’s a technique issue, I really do think she’s right that her body just doesn’t do multiples. But I still feel like I’m selfish and inadequate. Like I married a sex goddess and she married a regular person. Anybody else in a situation like this (on either side of it)? How do you deal with feeling inadequate?

“Jobs”/sports for dogs who want to work but aren’t actually needed for work

A lot of dogs need a job. But what if you aren’t disabled, you don’t hunt, and you don’t have sheep?

What are some good alternative outlets for a dog who wants a job? Do you have your dog close your doors and take off your socks even though you don’t need it? Do rally and agility satisfy your dog’s work drive?
