Zoysia comparison in pics

I am really trying to get better at identifying different zoysia cultivars when I see them “in the wild”. Every time I do Google searches comparing different zoysia varieties, the pictures don’t seem to give a good contrast between them. Has anyone found a guide or online site that helps you identify in pictures? I know with some genetically similar types the difference is less visual as much as it’s a difference in environment, but I would like to easily tell the difference between emerald, Zeon, and a few others in order to decide what I like the most.

I have read all the differences on charts, which is why I think Zeon would probably be best for me, but I would like to see it in photos compared to other varieties side-by-side. Most sellers near me don’t keep it in stock but ship straight from the farms to your house, so it’s difficult to see what it would look like. Just trying to plan ahead for the spring when I resod my entire yard.

Distance from main breaker box to inlet box dilemma

I am planning to install an interlock and inlet box, but the main panel is not in an ideal location for install the inlet box. My main panel box is on the side of my house which is ~20 feet from my neighbors house. Also there is no weather or theft protection (safe neighborhood but you know…desperate times create desperate people). My sub panel is in my garage (~20 feet away via crawl space if running a line to the main) which would be a better location for the generator from weather but still not ideal. Best location for noise, weather and theft protection would be to have an inlet box on the back of my house, but running 40+ feet of line to the main breaker interlock seems crazy.

Am I looking at this situation correctly or am I going to spend too much money and time running the inlet line to the back of my house?

Grout removal tool

It’s been a couple of decades since I’ve done tile work and I am completely out of practice….so essentially back to being a noob at this point.

I’m not ready to fully renovate this bathroom just yet but I do need to remove old grout that is cracked in the corners of my shower and regrout/caulk it. I was gonna buy one of those manual grout scrapers/saws, but I saw that most folks recommend oscillating tools or dremels. Based on the pictures attached is there a particular tool that would work best for my situation? The grout is fairly thin and I have to go all the way up to the corners. I’m just worried that an oscillating tool might be too large and bulky to get into the corners. I’m willing to buy whatever I need.

Also if I’m just replacing the grout that’s in the corners for now am I OK to just use sanded caulk or do I need to use grout?

Thanks

Reef sandals any good for PF?

Has anyone tried the Reef sandals / flip flops? I was looking at their Cruisers model and they look really comfortable but I’m not sure if they are good for PF. I’m trashing my Rainbows and want something that is supportive but also super cushiony.

Convert closed deck ceiling to vaulted ceiling

I have a 12 x 12 area on my deck that is covered and I want to open it up to a vaulted ceiling. Normally, I’m not a big fan of removing any kind of engineered trusses or structural beams in attics for obvious reasons, but I feel like the conversion would be very doable on the deck. What would be the most practical way to support the roof while having the ceiling vaulted?

Basically, I need the extra space to mount a TV up high and away from the elements on a motorized mount for lowering. I also want to have more airflow for the ceiling fan. I guess I’ll probably use shiplap or bead board or something to hide the OSB and 2 x 4 beams, but most important is making it structurally sound.

Spray for bugs in eaves without removing paneling

I usually have to pop out one of my vinyl soffits to get a sprayer inside the eaves, but even then spraying in all directions to fill the space is quite difficult. I normally use Bengal since I have the best luck with it (it’s dry so no moisture issues or messes). I want to find an alternative access point to spray inside the eaves. I thought I could drill holes in various places and cap them with color matching plugs when not in use, but still getting a 360 degree coverage might be difficult. Does someone make a spray nozzle straw or needle that can spray inside all directions once inserted in a blind location? Similar to putting a spray needle through a wall to fully spray the area within?

I am damaging my soffits by popping them open once a year. Also many of them are vented so I can get a straw inside without drilling but the straws only spray in one direction.

I hope my question/conundrum makes sense.

Hot wings in Daytona, Florida?

Heading south to Miami for the work week and probably gonna make it as far as Daytona tonight. Are there any insanely hot yet really good wing places in the area or must I default to Hooters?

Great-great-grandfather from France dead-end search.

I have been on a multi-year search for the origins of my great-great-grandfather as well as his father and have been at a dead-end for so long that I am not sure what the next step to take is. The story is that he came to New Orleans from Paris with his father and sister somewhere in the 1840s-1850s. I have gone through what seems like hundreds of New Orleans (and Ellis Island) passenger ship manifest pages with no luck. I am certain they ended up in New Orleans based on reliable info in the family. I’m starting to believe that maybe they were on the run and were stowaways on a ship or they were on one of the ships that lost all of its manifests in a warehouse fire around that timeframe. Unfortunately, doing birth searches for records in France is quite difficult because it seems that you have to go to the municipality records buildings in person to go through the records. Even though it is believed he was from Paris he may have not have been born in that region, so I’m afraid to even plan a trip to go in case it’s not where he’s from.

I understand there’s a lot of complexities involved in finding relatives in France due to the legalities surrounding DNA tests there. The fact that I can’t find any potential descendants of his ancestors via 23&Me and AncestryDNA testing is mind-boggling.

From his obituary, he was born in 1840 and died in 1909. Born in France and reared in New Orleans.

His father died in 1853 of yellow fever in New Orleans, so he ended up in a boarding house with his sister. I cannot find any info on his sister. Their mother supposedly did not come to the US so I assume she passed away in France (prompting them to leave?).

For anyone who has read this far, I am willing to take any advice on how I can move forward with my search.

His name was Peter Fremont and was changed to Peter Ramp after adoption. His father was also apparently named Peter Fremont. His sister was Anne Fremont (Ramp), I believe.

Thank you.

Fence line laser pointer

I am planning to install a fence next to my property boundary which is marked by 2 property survey pins 333 feet apart over uneven terrain. Due to the distance, using survey string would not be ideal because of wind and sagging. I figured a good laser pointer would be ideal to sit on top of one of the pins and point to the other one. This is probably the only time I’ll ever need a laser pointer for this particular application so I don’t really want to spend a few hundred dollars on a rotary laser level. Is there an inexpensive green laser pointer that I could use for this distance? I can use it later in the day as the sun is going down for low light if needed.

I thought about one of the $30 Amazon laser pointers but their specs are not well documented so I’m not sure if I would get a nice dot at the other end of the distance or if it would even transmit that far.

Thanks for any advice or suggestions

Garden hose reel >100 feet?

Looking to buy my wife a self-retracting garden house reel and I see where lots of people recommend the giraffe look AW40. I also see some of the cons regarding it however, the price point seems to be good for her needs. My biggest concern is that the half inch diameter 133 foot long hose might not have very good flow. Has anyone tested this? My hose faucets already have 1/2” pipes going to them from the house, but with that extended length, I worry that the flow rate will slow down too much to give any decent pressure. A 5/8 inch hose would probably be more ideal, but I don’t see where they offer one or maybe I’m worried about a nonexistent problem.

Any thoughts?

Inherited a percussion shotgun that’s has been in the family since the civil war (so I’m told). It’s not in the greatest shape and has no markings other than some decorative markings. I mostly just want to get a possible manufacturer and year. Was hoping that I wouldn’t have to take it apart to get to the water table, but I may have to unless anything sticks out as being from a specific manufacturer.

Also there is a decorative hammer screw that is missing so if anyone knows of a place to get replica screws or if someone collects these parts to resell, please let me know.

Thanks.

I recently inherited an M&P Shield 9 M2.0. It came with no magazines so I ordered two of the OEM 7- round magazines. I did not go with the 8- round magazines because I figured the smaller the dimensions are, the more likely I am to keep it on me at all times. I’m probably just splitting hairs with that, but I needed something in the meantime. My plan was to use the 7- round magazines to keep on me and order higher capacity magazines for range duty. However, I’m already considering whether to go with a MagGuts 9 round mod to use for CCW as well as at the range. Will I lose any reliability over the OEM setup by doing that? I don’t want to use the kit for CCW if I’m increasing the chances of a jam.

Also, I heard some people have issues with the hinged trigger. Should I swap that out? Any other issues I need to know about on this model?
