At summers end, Golden hour; Instax Mini 99
Instax film genuinely looks incredible during golden hour

Instax film genuinely looks incredible during golden hour
For such a cool film it sure does well in golden sunlight <3
All taken with an old reusable disposable film camera. Jungle Jim’s is an awesome massive grocery store but Mann does it have a liminal feel to it
Don’t mind me currently obsessed with the look of water on instant film 😅
Like how these came out especially the bike one :)
Had a great time seeing the biggest rubber duck at the Casino! Here are some photos I took of her in 35mm film oh and a few Polaroids I took!
Love how these came out :)
They look like they are about to drop the baddest album of the year 😂🤣 picture of a few of my friends I dragged to polacon NYC this year
Starting to find out that instax works best when capturing subjects drenched in warm sunlight as much as possible. I understand instas is a daylight balanced film but it definitely is at its most accurate color temperature in a bright warm sunny day. Anything taken in more shaded light seems to lean way more aggressively blue but if you take a picture of anything drenched in sunlight the colors and warmth of the film really start to show and I wanted to share some test shots from my Mini 99 to show how good this film can actually look. All shots were done using exposure comp on the camera set to “D”
Playing with doing indoors long exposures with instax mini. Figured it might yield some best results and I was definitely right. Love how subtle these tones are. This was about a 5 second exposure
A year ago after owning this camera for only 4 days i mistakenly put in the wrong battery by mistake and fried the camera.. I then sent it to a third party repair who was able to fix the board but we ran in to a problem… basically the TLDR is the rear screen and controls go through a flex cable, that flex cable basically self destructs once it’s unfolded to open the camera and it was the same for the parts that came from other cameras. After months and months of waiting, the repairman was able to have new cables re-manufactured and I now have a working x20 again!!
This camera was my first Fuji when I got it I had since then been using an X100s and please with it but nothing beats the sheer compactness and versatility the tiny X20 offers imo. I really hope Fuji will use this platform again and give us an X40 because this form factor is fantastic!!
Also for anyone who is curious, this is who did the repair highly recommend!!!
If you love grain, BOY have a got a film for you!! Lomo color 92 is terrible, low resolution, low saturation and very very grainy.. and to be honest I kinda love it!!! It’s a vibe for sure and in the right kind of portraits I think this stuff can really work well for certain kind of look! Definitely don’t think this film works particularly well at box speed from my experience though, I am probably going to experiment vs with bracketing it a bit.. some of my shots feel very under exposed which is wild because almost all of these used flash in some capacity… my guess is this film probably would do well at around iso 250-300ish
Around July of last year, I got my very first Fuji camera. I scored an X20 on Facebook Marketplace for a little over 300 bucks, and I quickly fell absolutely in love with it after my first day shooting. I then went on vacation and used it for three days, falling even more in love with it. At some point when I got home, I decided to go out and shoot some more at a local community garden.
I had also been shooting my Instax Mini 99 and had both the batteries for the X20 and the Instax Mini 99 in my book bag. Now, these are unfortunately very similar batteries in size, shape, and look. Unfortunate for me, it turns out one of the main differences between these batteries is that the polarity is different, even though the size, shape, and voltages are relatively the same. I accidentally, without looking, put in the wrong battery, and after that, the camera never powered on again.
That was until I contacted a third-party repair person, and they were actually able to do a board-level repair and fix the camera in its entirety. However, there is a fatal flaw with working on the X20. It turns out there is a very, very fragile ribbon cable that connects the main board to the rear display and controls. It all goes through just one flex cable. Now, given that this cable has been flexed in the same way since 2013 when this camera was manufactured, it unfortunately means that as soon as you do any kind of repair to these cameras and flex that cable, it basically self-destructs. The repair person went through two donor cameras and eventually settled on reverse engineering and getting a Chinese manufacturer to produce an entirely new cable to get this camera working.
It was a long time, and I only originally got to use this camera for one week, and it has been broken for over a year. But I finally got it back, and oh my gosh, what an absolute joy this camera is to use in every way. I am so happy to have it back, and these are my first few test pictures from the camera that I've shot since I got it back to make sure everything was working properly.
My gosh, Fuji really hit the nail on the head with the X20. I genuinely wish they would have stuck with this platform. I think it could have done such great things, especially if they would have just took the sensor in the X-half and the electronics and basically shoved it in a new version of this camera. I think it would have been an absolute hit these days, especially with the small compact camera craze.
I'm really holding out hope that one day Fuji will manufacture an X40 that supports all the modern film simulations, because I think this platform is one of the best compact cameras that has ever existed. It is excellent from the way it is built, to the fast lens, to the way it shoots, to the hybrid optical viewfinder. I think this thing is an incredible machine, and it is sad that Fuji gave us the X-half and not an X40.
Main camera had a dead body so I ended up going for a walk around town with just a tiny digi cam from 2006 😂 had a ton of fun!
A lot of people ask me what the best 'Polaroid' is for a beginner with no experience who just wants something that works. Well, the Instax Mini 99 hands down has the most accurate exposure system I’ve ever used on an instant camera.
It truly is a 'set it and forget it' kind of machine. Even though it is one of the most fully featured Instax cameras you can get—complete with different filter settings, exposure compensation, and even a manual vignette switch. I find that leaving it in normal mode with 'D' (-0.3) on the exposure compensation wheel yields what I believe are the most consistently and perfectly exposed results I’ve ever seen on instant film.
Now, I myself am an avid Polaroid shooter (my main camera is an SX-70 with a modded R-board), but for no-frills simplicity, I have to give it to the Mini 99. It offers smartphone like ease of use, simply hit the button and get a picture! At times the results almost look more like what you would expect from a digital image than an analog film photo which is wild and speaks to the technical prowess Fujifilm was able to achieve with their instax film.
I love my Mini 99 and highly recommend it to beginners or anyone who just wants a hassle free instant shooting experience.
Welp, Evey local store near me was completely out of Polaroid GO film 😭 so, I snagged instax while it was in stock and decided to shoot some summery pool shots in my instax mini 99 instead of my go. I know instax film is topically cold (why I am an avid Polaroid instead of instax shooter because I crave warmth in my photos) but just wow.. i cannot even describe to you how beautiful and vivid the shades of blue are in these photos when you see them in real life. They dont even look like instant analog photos to me.. just wanted to share these because I felt like they came out so good! Also shouts out to my mini 99, the metering is just so dead on!
Incredible how beautiful the colors of blue water come out in instax mini film!! These are some of the best looking instant photos I’ve ever taken! (All shot with instax mini 99, N setting and D exposure comp)
