What should i make next?

TLDR first, I like building stuff, i want some ideas on cool projects that are above beginner level, and probably practical. (like not just a flashing led christmas tree for example)

Now on to the wall of text. These are some projects I've made to give an idea of the kinds of things I've enjoyed.

The latest was a 6e2 tube magic eye VU meter. a little less practical, but still useful. It was a kit, combined with a premade power board to boost 12v to 180v, a 3d printed enclosure, and of course obligatory RGB lights. This was to go with my headphone amplifier stack.

I've also built a few things with Arduino's like "the internet", which is just a wall mount key lock box with a knife switch that plays funny sounds when you turn it off and on again, Ive made a portal gun. a proton pack (i can share links to anything you are curious about), a couple midi controllers, some of these were guides that i followed, some I coded from scratch (like the internet)

I've made a custom solar generator with reclaimed 26650 cells (i've since replaced them with an off the shelf battery). I've made a guitar power amp head with an old JBL amp from a late 90s Toyota, but that was just frankensteining some parts together.

I have pretty severe ADHD and I need something to occupy my brain so I don't doomscroll too much.

So what are some fun projects that you have made, that you found surprisingly practical, or a good money saver over buying off the shelf, or just plain fun to build/design.

I have several kits of parts from amazon, resistors, caps, diodes, transistors, proto boards, etc. I have a 3d printer, spare arduinos, i hae a box of vintage stuff an old ham radio guy gave me (i'm also a ham). Some needle gauges, precision pots, older resistors, caps, some IC's that i need to get the data sheets on, but probably common stuff if i had to guess.

Kudos

I just wanted to give a shoutout to any of the developers or contributors that might see this.

I just migrated from Core to Scale. It took about 20 minutes, and there were absolutely ZERO problems.

The foresight and polish on this is amazing. Fully backwards comaptible and migrated, in place, flawlessly.

Amazing job guy, and thanks so much for offering it for free. I've learned so much about system administration with my homelab.

My Budget DAP and setup

Just got my stand 3d printed for my budget DAP. You don't get much cheaper than a free old phone you have laying around.

I repurposed my old Moto Z3 Play in case I want to use this portable (super long battery life with the added battery mod), an Anker USB hub so i can charge and use the cheap USB DAC that I'm sure everyone here is familiar with. Running UAPP.

That goes into the Douk stack, which is a tube-t5c preamp that takes -10dbV in for all 4 sources (DAP, line level preamp for old gameing handhelds, work PC, and gaming PC) and outputs 0dBV to a Douk U3 headphone amp that powers my Superlux HD660 PRO's, and the Douk G3 that powers the two Douk Bs-1 bass shakers bolted to my office chair.

I also have Superlux HD330, and the Linsoul KZ ZSN PRO X IEM's, though I like the closed back 660s for my office due to the better sound isolation.

For the "DAP" i spent about $25 between the dock, right angle, and DAC. for the whole stack and all 3 sets of headphones i have less than $400 in it.

Lamest transformers

Let's start a contest for the lamest transformers. My treadmill kept turning itself on and my buddy joked that it had become sentient, I then made a joke that it was a transformer, which led to us prompting AI for a picture of said transformer.

Come up with a lame thing that a transformer would transform into, prompt AI for a picture, and either you or AI come up with a clever name for it. Upvote the lamest transformers.

I present to you "Fast-Track"

What is your most outdated service

What "thing" do you have that has slipped your mind for updates for so long, you're ashamed to share it?

I have a proxmox cluster, TrueNAS, the whole shebang in a half rack. I try to keep it regularly updated. I find the process fun and probably manage it once a month at least. This poor raspberry pi 4, 2gb, is bolted to the back of my 3d printer. I went proably a year or two without printing anything, but finally dried my filament and dusted it off. I had to get the pi connected again as i have segmented my network and changed my subnets since the last time i used it.

I got so many pop ups about updates for Octopi and various plug ins. I think at this point I'm just going to back up my config and start with a fresh image lol.

[Request] one time deposit, at birth, for retirement

how much money would someone need to put into a retirement account at the time of a childs birth, so that they would have enough to retire by retirement age, assuming no depoits beyond that initial one.

I'm sure this isn't quite a simple formula, so a range i guess. like what is the minimum that would be significant, what would be the maximum before it was overkill, etc.

Finally finished my work desk setup

Finally finished my work headphone setup. Its mostly Douk Audio, which is surprisingly good stuff for the price. I find myself in a lot more meetings recently and cheap earbuds were getting on my nerves.

I built this around the Tube-T5C preamp. First input is my work pc via one of those cheap 32/384 usb c dongles, second input is straight from a sandbox pc that will likely just be for Rocksmith, third input is running through the Douk L1 line amplifier to bring my Vita and other cheap handhelds up to consumer line level 0.316 volts.

The tube preamp brings all sources to studio line level 0.755 volts. It's dual outputs go to a Douk U3 headphone amp, and a Douk G3 55Wx2 amp. The headphones are Superlux HD660s & HD330s, and the amp powers two Douk BS-1 tactile transducers bolted to my chair. I got the G3 for cheap on Ebay, so while it's not a dedicated sub amp, I built a 2nd order adjustable low pass filter for it. The filter swing from about 45Hz to about 160Hz.

Please ignore the lack of wire maintenance, I might have to move offices in the next couple days, so i didn't spend a lot of time on it.

Sort of secondary to this, but since nice monitors almost never have microphones, i bought a cheap $30 boom mic from amazon.

USB dongle $12

Tube pre $87

Line pre $26

Headphone amp $26

G3 amp $14

HD330 $60

HS660 $54

BS-1 pair $94

Figuring in the mic, and the random cables, but subtracting some rewards points, I have about $350 in everything. I think i caught good deals on everything, and overall I'm quite happy with the sound for the money i have in it. Whatcha all think?

Headphones plus tactile transducer

Has anyone ever put tactile transducers on their chair to pair with their headphones?

I have a decent headphone setup in my office, I wonder if it will make the bass seem more powerful without disturbing my team.

possibly new model, tube preamp

I know that most tube preamps are probably more of a placebo effect, but I just stumbled onto something that I think might be new to the market

Nobsound Douk Tube-T5C

https://doukaudio.com/products/douk-audio-tube-t5c-mini-stereo-tube-preamp-4-way-audio-selector-splitter-headphone-amp-w-vu-meter

It uses a single 12ax7 and claims to be running the plates at 180 volts. On top of that the headphone output is 500mW at 32 ohms, which is the same as my Fosi K5.

My plan is to use this to color and drive some superlux hd330 and/or hd660 headphones. I have the Fosi K5 at home, this will be for my desk at work.

I've been fascinated with tubes for some time, and really want to play around with them. My buddy game me an ART Tube-MP studio a while back, which is also a 12ax7, but definitely a starved plate. With that said, running my guitar through it definitely gives it a nice tubey warmth.

One of these days i would love to build a simple 5 watt pure tube amp, but I just priced that out recently and I'm probably looking at $300-$400 to do it right. This T5C is $100, and i got it from Nobsounds Ebay page for $87.

It probably won't be here for about a week, but I thought I would get some smarter eyes on it, and hopefully get some opinions. Though I will definitely report back once i get it and run it through its paces.

possible virus disguised as Vita plugin

u/shevoK0

I was looking to install the EQVita plugin and came across the below github

https://github.com/Voistace/EQVita

It lists a newer version than what is found on VitaDB so i thought i would try it. Chrome flags it as dangerous, so i downloaded it on an isolated Linux VM. the zip only contains a bat, exe, and txt file.

I'm not expert here, but i don't think the Vita can use any of that. Is this a legit malicious file masquerading as a new version of a popular Vita plugin?

The original shev0K one is located here

https://github.com/shev0k/EQVita

and still lists version 1.10

EDIT: it has been taken down, and the account suspended. Thanks for the input guys!

Not pulling latest image

I am running Portainer Community Edition2.39.2 LTS. I just went to update Plex by deleting the container, going to the stacks page, editor, deploy, and enabled repull image and redeploy, as I have done numerous times in the past. It just redeployed the image that was already there and did not pull the latest

I then used the CLI to pull the image, which worked, then I redeployed the container via Portainer the same way and it updated successfully.

I then tried pihole which was doing the same thing. This time I removed the container, then I deleted the image manually via Portainer. Then when i redeployed it, it pulled it like normal.

I was also able to update Nginx, but had to do the same thing as pihole.

while there was not an update, i did redeploy the Portainer container, which is handled via CLI and a script i made. I'm not sure if that is relevant or not, but i did that between Plex and Pihole. I also ran "docker image prune" and "docker volume prune" between Plex and Pihole.

Obviously things are still functional, but can anyone tell me why I am having to manually delete the image before it will pull the latest? All my stacks are set to pull ":latest"

Thanks

Scheduled maintenance questions

I just took my 2017 Escape in for an oil change, and of course they reccomend everything under the sun. I'm trying to sort through what i should actually do. Shes got a little less than 80k on her. They reccomended the following shown below. Now i would never pay for either air filters, but i imagine they need changed by 80k, so i will do those. And I'm guessing the oil additive and the fuel additive treatments are a little bit snake oil. I know the rear brakes need done, and those parts are in my trunk now.

My main questions beyond that is the differential flush, transfer case service, and transmission flush, as well as the cost on the rear shocks (that seems ridiculous)

I have heard that as far as a tranny flush, after a certain point of not doing it, you actually don't want to do it as it will be problematic. On that note i have had cars with over 200k miles, that i guarantee have never had a tranny flush and were totally fine. I wonder if that mentality is true and if it carries over to the transfer case and differential as well.

The shocks, i just cant fathom why its that much. I kinda want to pay them to do the brakes (they said they would use my parts and it would be a little cheaper than quoted), and i want to let them do the shocks, just because im getting older and dont really want to do it.

On the way in to work today, traffic was slow going. I see a white Mach e behind me to my left. as traffic is coming to a stop again we end up side by side. I look to my left as he comes up beside me. he's looking to the right already. As we make eye contact I wave, and he waves back like an overly excited child.

Thank you guy in the white Mach e, you made my day today.
