What watch is Paul Hollywood Wearing?

Curious what Paul Hollywood from British Bake Off is wearing. I’m guessing that whatever it is, it’s a non-standard band.

Watch Recommendation

I’m looking for a budget watch for travel. I have a nice watch that I wear daily, but travel to India for work and Latin America for vacation. I don’t want to flash an expensive item in front of my colleagues in India and don’t want to make myself a target in the random places I go for holiday.

I want a stainless case, metal band, analog watch face. I bought a Casio with numbers on the face and I have realized I like that over the stylized faces. Only issue I have with the Casio is the black plastic bezel with the stainless case. I didn’t see an option on the Casio website for a similar watch with a metal bezel. Looking at some other brands, I see only non-numeric faces.

Budget is under $250. Suggestions?

Are only straight women interested in spa stuff?

My wife (straight) is on the phone with her good friend and colleague who is a lesbian. They are trying to find a place to meet for happy hour. The college suggested a sports bar and it’s a long set of connections, but my wife suggested that they should start a business that’s a combination sports bar and nail salon.

Her colleague is insisting that, in her words, “lesbians don’t like any of that spa stuff.”

My wife was incredulous.

What say you?

So an edit: 1. The question is about liking spa stuff, not whether a nail salon and a bar together are a good idea.

  1. Note that the straight people in this story were incredulous that lesbians were a monolith and it was the lesbian who was categorical.

10-hour layover recommendations

I am an American traveling through Vietnam on a work trip in early September. Between Manila and Mumbai, I’ll have a 10- hour layover in Hanoi. I arrive at about 9 or 10 on a Saturday and leave that evening.

I’m not a super pro traveler but I’ve traveled for work to India and the Philippines several times so it’s not my first time in Asian countries.

I love food, historical sites, and sitting and watching the world go by.

Anyone have any recommendations for me?

What if the French Supplied Military Aid to Republican Spain?

One of the things to that led to WWII was the feeling that the Germans were capable of so much more offensive capability than they actually were in the 30s. This was one of the reasons France’s new government didn’t provide aid to the Republicans at the outbreak of the Spanish civil war: the fear of a widening German war.

But the German military was largely a paper tiger at this point.

What if the French had sent arms, including aircraft, to Spain? They would have seen the relative capability right away, would have helped an ally, and might well have learned some of the combined arms lessons that were so critical to the Germans later. Most importantly, they might have gained confidence in their own capabilities.

Picking Up Bingo Today

I’ve been on vacation for a little over two weeks. Bingo has been mostly staying with friends who have two goldens, so he’s not lacking for company or entertainment. They have told us that when they come home from vacation, their dogs are super excited to see them but then sulk for a day or two to show that they’re mad for being left behind.

I’m looking forward to seeing Bingo and seeing how he reacts.

Wrought Iron Railings at the Arc de Triomphe

We walked up to the top of the Arc de Triomphe last night to see the sunset from there and the Eiffel Tower lit up. At the top step of the staircase, I noticed the handrail was forged wrought iron. The grain had been exposed by long use.

Also pics from the view because it was awesome.

Plotting/flying Great Circle Routes

How are great circle routes plotted and flown in practice? By cardinal directions almost all of them will be a constant changing bearing, right? I guess the answer is now “autopilot,” so I guess the question is how was this done before sophisticated navigation? Were there just a whole bunch of faceted arcs? How did the math work?

A Question about the Skoolie Market

I’m kind of Skoolie-adjacent or Skoolie-curious, so I get this sub and the marketplace sub in my feed. I see lots of ads for things that are nice but not really the “full builds” they claim to be. By this I mean no toilet or a regular old porta potty, camping stoves, non-integrated hot water, minimal or no grey water, etc. These rigs seem to be asking a premium price.

I don’t want to comment in the marketplace sub or on any ads, because I don’t want to crap on anyone’s attempts to sell. But is this really the market at this time? Are people getting $50k, $70k, and more for 15-20 year (or more) old Skoolies with really pretty pedestrian living quarters?

My setup is a mid-90s class C that I overpaid for four or five years ago during the pandemic inflation. But I paid $35k for a 19,000 mile one owner RV with factory 4x4. It seems crazy to me that someone would pay double for a skoolie with less creature comforts.

Am I just out of touch? (the answer is clearly yes about many things, this would just be one more)

Help With Terminology and Acronyms

Hi ladies. My teen daughter is having a problem with a teacher in a supervisory position at the camp where she is a counselor. He will be her teacher next year also, for a class that is key to her ongoing curriculum. The problem is that he has been behaving inappropriately towards her. Not in a sexual abuse kind of way, but in a way that would be emotional abuse if it was an adult intimate relationship.

The things we have seen in email and had reliably reported from multiple sources include changing goalposts of requirements, gaslighting, blaming the victim for the events, and bringing up unrelated (and spurious) actions to deflect from the central issue.

I have read here before about “Why Does He Behave This Way” and also seen people describe these behaviors in terms of an acronym that lists several more classic behaviors of a manipulator.

Can you remind me of the acronym and any other frameworks for this behavior?

We are meeting with him and his boss tomorrow in advance of another meeting to ensure that he is never in a room alone with her. I want to have the right way to describe the situation.

California Roadside Emissions Check

In the neighborhood yesterday, there was a police checkpoint set up to stop cars and pull them aside to check their emissions compliance. I was walking the dog, so I didn’t really see if it was everyone, selected people, and what the search entailed.

What would be the situation here? Are they counting on a knock-and-talk kind of thing and getting consent? Are they required to stop everyone or a system of every third (or something)? What’s the obligation of a driver to comply? Could a driver just say, no thanks?

California, as mentioned in the title.

This was a real situation but didn’t affect me in any way, so I’m hoping this is still LAOT.

Taylor Swift -> Devo Connection

This is really not a troll post, but is there anyone else out there who is both old enough to remember when Devo was new and have Taylor Swift playing in the house?

I can’t get over how much the chorus from Opalite sounds like the chorus from Planet Earth. The chanting rhythms of the “…all my life….” part in particular. Is it just me, or does anyone else hear it?

Another CX5 question

I was here a couple days ago asking about 2018 or 2019 CX5s. We have had a bit of scope creep and are now looking at a newer one. 2025 with under 40k miles (kinda high, I know). Given that we are getting a car to replace our Mazda5 wagon with ongoing transmission issues at 130k or so, my wife is a little suspicious of Mazdas.

So what’s the word on the newer ones?

2025 CX5 Questions

My wife is in the market for a new car. We are replacing our (until recently) beloved Mazda5 wagon. Because it’s had transmission problems at only 125k miles, she’s a little skeptical of another Mazda.

But we are looking at a 2025 CX5 PP with kinda high mikes (just under 40k) but a reasonable price. It’s a J VIN which I assume means Japan manufactured.

We are seeing some mixed stuff lately about Mazda reliability and also some specific stuff about transmissions.

Can I hear some straight feedback on recent Mazda reliability?

First Gen Chrysler Pacifica

I have a soft spot for the first gen Chrysler Pacifica 2003-2007. When they came out, they didn’t sell well for a number of reasons but now they’re cheap. I’m looking for one with under 85k miles.

I currently have a crew cab 4x4 8’ bed F-250. It’s fine but I don’t have rural property anymore so it’s really just about hauling dirt bikes that keeps me from buying a station wagon. I wouldn’t mind getting better than 11mpg, either.

Are they reliable? In addition to drivetrain, so things like electrical stuff and HVAC still work reliably?

How common is a tow package? I ride dirt bikes and have a light 3-rail trailer. Three bikes and the trailer are under 2000 lbs. Probably closer to 1500. Can I add a hitch?

If I can find one with leather and in good shape with low miles, is there a better 6-person plus dog option for $6k or less?

Older Siennas and Towing

I’m looking at getting an older sienna (probably 3rd gen) to replace my current truck. I don’t have rural property any longer so the truck isn’t as ideal as it used to be. One thing it’s great for, however, is hauling dirt bikes. That’s the one thing that’s kept me from getting a van (or a suburban, or wagon) for a long time.

I have a light 3-rail motorcycle trailer, though. I’d also like to carry just a single dirt bike on a hitch carrier.

Anyway, I saw a post here that said newer Siennas all have the prep but not necessarily a hitch. Is this the case for the third gen? How do I tell, other than the presence of a hitch?
