I'm finally doing it!
I played Heroquest as an 11-year-old kid back when it was first released. My friends and I loved it and played it often but I don't think we ever got further than quest 6 or 7 in the original book. I don't know what happened to my original copy.
I rediscovered it a few years ago whilst working as a teacher at a SEN college. An even nerdier colleague and I introduced some of our students to it, but time conspired against us, and we never got to play more than the odd quest or two.
I'm 48 now and bought a new copy a while back in the hope that I could coax my eldest son into playing it. He just turned 11. We played it for the first time last month and he loved it! It's now become a regular Friday afternoon activity, and we just completed quest 5. I'm so excited that I'm finally playing it comprehensively as a campaign, that he and I have a hobby we can share and I can't wait to get hold of some expansions.
Are there any home brew rules anyone could suggest? We play a hero each with the app as Zargon and so far it's not been particularly testing, which suits him, but it might be nice to switch things up a bit in case he gets bored.
