Looking for a pre-emergent

I'm looking to aerate, detatch, lime and overseed my Vancouver, BC lawn in September. I've bought some soil, fertilisers and premium seeds.

I really want this to go as well as possible and I'd like to put down some pre-emergent. I'd prefer not to deal with cross-border purchases and was wondering if there was any other option to getting some pre-emergent other than corn gluten meal.

I've looked on FB Marketplace and Craiglist but no luck.

Premium soil to buy?

I spent quite a bit of money to buy some premium grass seeds and I want to give myself the best chance to successfully overseed my Vancouver, BC lawn in September.

Is there such a thing as premium soil and if so, what is the best brand to buy?

What's the best commercial grade grass seed to use in Vancouver, BC?

One of the sites I was reading said to avoid grass seeds from big box stores because of fillers and higher ratios of weed seeds.

There recommendation was a premium lawn seed that overtime spreads horizontally across the lawn blocking out weeds. These seeds are more expensive and used by golf courses.

Unfortunately, the site was American based.

Is there something similar we can buy in Canada that I could use for my Vancouver lawn? I am looking to overseed next month.

Importing pesticides for personal use in Canada

On some of the Canadian lawn subreddits, users say they purchase their herbicides in the US and then drive them back into Canada without any issue. The reason they buy these products in the US is because some of them, such as Tenacity, are unavailable for purchase in Canadian retail stores.

I was looking at the Health Canada guide on bringing herbicides into Canada:

https://www.canada.ca/en/health-canada/services/publications/product-safety/importing-pesticides-personal-use.html

I understand all of the rules except the one listed below and I was wondering if someone could help clarify what this means:

  • the imported product would be for domestic use if it were registered in Canada

How soon after a spouse dies is it appropriate to date again?

My wife passed away 2 months ago and I would like to date again, I'm just wondering if it is too soon?

My wife and I were married 30 years and we raised 3 kids who are all independent. The last 10 years of our marriage was loveless. We respected each other, supported one another and stayed faithful, but we both realised the relationship was over.

While my wife physically passed away 2 months ago, I've mourned the loss of this relationship for over 10 years.

I would like to move forward with my life and see if I can find love again. I'm just wondering if this would be appropriate so soon after my wife died.

What is the minimum square footage when building a Vancouver home?

I own a 2000-square foot single occupancy old timer home on a 33x122 square foot lot in Vancouver, BC. I want to tear it down and build a new home for myself.

I am 60 years old and this home is just for me so I don't need anything big. I was thinking of building a single level 1000-square foot home. This would be ideal as I age and I could avoid the condo fees that come with apartment living. I also don't want to be a landlord or subdivide the land.

Is this doable or is there a minimum square footage that the home must be? All the homes around me are newer 2000-5000 square feet in size.

Severance vs duty to mitigate damages

I'm 60 years old and have worked for a Canadian bank for the past 30 years. The bank's head office is in Toronto and I'm in BC. I am grandfathered into their defined benefit pension plan and I make about $100,000/year.

It was just announced that my job will be outsourced. The new company will recognise our seniority, pay and vacation. The only catch is they don't offer a defined benefit pension plan so I will be moved to their defined contribution plan.

I had 2 questions:

  1. Am I forced to transfer to the new company to mitigate damages or can I decline the offer and request a 2 year severance package as technically the compensation isn't identical due to the loss of the DB pension plan?
  2. If the new company increased their salary offer by $10,000-$20,000 to compensate for the loss of the DB pension, will I then be forced to accept the offer to mitigate damages or can I still ask for severance.

I'm really not interested in moving to a new company and learning their culture as I'm close to retirement.

Do you have a recommendation for a Vancouver lawn company?

I'm looking to hire a Vancouver company to help me with my lawn starting in late August.

The goal is to eliminate the weeds, aerate, detach and overseed so that my grass will hopefully establish itself during the cooler, wet fall months.

Does anyone have a recommendation for a reliable company to work with?

Mattress pickup service

My parents who live in Vancouver recently had a new mattress delivered to their home and no arrangements were made for the old mattress to be picked up.

My parent are seniors on a fixed income. I was wondering if there is any reliable, low cost service they could use to have the mattress picked up? As they live in Vancouver proper, there is no city curbside pickup available.

Why does Par3 have such a loyal following?

I know Par3 concentrate is twice as strong as Killex concentrate. However, from what I read, you use 120 ml of Killex vs 60 ml of Par3 to blanket spray a 1000 square foot yard. That means the amount of active ingredients put down on the lawn is roughly the same.

Based on this, I was just wondering why does Par3 have such a loyal following? It doesn't seem to be any more effective at killing weeds or am I missing something?

Killex:
2,4-D: 95 g/L
MCPP-P: 52.52 g/L
Dicamba: 9 g/L

Par3:
2,4-D: 190 g/L
MCPP-P: 100 g/L
Dicamba: 18 g/L

Positive UBC change: 10 paid experiences, 5 volunteering

One of the biggest complaints on this subreddit is wealthy students have a competitive advantage applying to med school because financially, they can focus on volunteer opportunities over work experience.

With UBC prioritising paid work experience, this level the playing field. Those that are forced to work to pay for school are now on an equal playing field with other applicants.

Some may say that this sudden change favours mature students and it maybe it does but the reality is this is nothing new, the application process has always favoured this. I'm all for this change. UBC is weeding out the fluff of applicants who are club VPs in favour of more tangible life skills that people get working at Starbucks, McDonalds etc.

Pocket reduction surgery

I was told I need pocket reduction surgery on all of my molars and was wondering if someone could help me answer some questions I had after I left their office:

  1. I was told after the surgery, I would use proxy brushes to clean the spaces. Do I no longer need to floss the teeth that have been surgically repaired?

  2. How does the recovery compare to a gum graft. I had that done a few years ago and it was 2 months in length and I found it difficult.

How does CIBC calculate severance?

I'm just wondering how much severance I can expect. I'm 55 with 30 years of service. I was grandfathered into a DB pension and I'm eligible for full pension at 61.

Is it common that they would give service credits so that even if I am laid off, I could still get my full pension as if I retire at 61?

What did you get as a severance package?

With CIBC laying off so many people, it would be worth knowing if we're all being treated fairly in terms of the severance being offered.

If you are able, can you share your:

  1. Age

  2. Salary

  3. Years with the company

  4. Any special perks they offered to get you to sign the departure package.

  5. Any other information that could help others.

What's a good alternative to Real Debrid?

With Real Debrid barely functional for most people, I'm just wondering what is a good alternative to use?

I really liked how it integrated right into the addons and you could stream straight from RD if you wanted to bypass Kodi.

What's the most accurate way of forecasting rainfall?

I wanted to apply some products to my lawn and needed a minimum of 15 mm of rain.

My Google app shows just 4 mm of rain on Friday but as of right now, the Weather Network shows 15 mm of rain.

I had 2 questions:

  1. Is there a site that is more accurate than others to forecast future rainfall?

  2. I've applied the products hoping the Weather Network forecast is accurate. On Saturday, is there a way to tell how much rain actually fell on Friday.
