Peplum tops!

Hear me out - peplum tops! I've just discovered this silhouette and omg, it's so flattering! And a lot of them are not clingy, but skim the body, which I find more comfortable than something that sticks to every lump. Anyone else love these?

Cost of CPAP supplies

I just got new insurance and they’re telling me it might (they can’t guarantee anything, of course! 🙄) be $180 out of pocket for two filters and two nasal cushions. That seems high, right?

My last insurance was great - I didn’t have to pay anything for supplies for my machine. I just ordered it when it said it was due to be replaced and it showed up. So this is a bit of a shock. That’s going to end up being $180/month, at least, if I replace the filter and cushion as often as recommended. And more when it’s time to replace the hose and whatever else.

Ready to Budget confusion

I just imported my budget from YNAB. Everything looked great until I started creating goals. I tweaked a couple from what I had in YNAB, mostly to increase some.

In YNAB, I had budgeted through part of October. That all carried over when I imported, but now some of my July-Sept goals are underfunded. I figured I could “unbudget” some of the categories in October and reapply that to earlier months. But the money that got moved to Ready to Budget is only showing up in October. It says I have $0 in Ready to Budget in earlier months.

How do I move that money in October to July, August, & September?

Mysterious money help!

I had two transactions, totaling $116.66, that I categorized to my Reimbursement category. I didn’t have any money assigned to that category as it’s for money I’m being reimbursed. If I’m getting the money right away, I leave it negative for a short time and just categorize the reimbursement directly to the category. If it’s going to be a while, I’ll cover it from other places.

In this case, I got the reimbursement about twenty minutes after I had categorized the two transactions. I categorized the reimbursement directly to the category, not to the Ready to Budget category.

Between putting in the two transactions and getting the reimbursement, I had also approved two transactions that did go to Ready to Budget. I fully budgeted that money in July-October. I know there was zero in there when I finished budgeting in October. However, when I went back to this month, there was suddenly plus $116.66 in Ready to Budget.

I thought the Ready to Budget money would resolve when I added the reimbursement transaction to the reimbursement category, but I’ve done that and it’s still in Ready to Budget. It has to have something to do with how I dealt with the reimbursements, it’s too much of a coincidence that it’s exactly the same amount, but I can’t figure out what I did wrong…

Any ideas what happened?

Credit card with spending limits?

I know there are cards for teens where you can set limits, but can anyone get those? I need something for my elderly father who keeps falling for scams. I’d like to get him a card where he can only use it for certain purchases or that at least limits the amount he can spend per transaction. Does something like that exist?

View money moved?

Is it possible to see money I’ve moved out of a category to cover another category?

I have a “cushion” category that I use to cover other categories that get overspent. But something is not right - it’s not showing the amount it should. I’m running ZeroSum and YNAB at the same time right now to see if I want to switch. My cushion category on YNAB (which I think is more accurate as I have my banks linked but don’t on ZeroSum) is $20 more than on Zerosum. I’d like to find the difference.

I live my life by alarms and notifications and I hate it

The title really. I can’t get anything done or be on time for anything if I don’t have alarms and notifications set but it makes my life so regimented and stifling. I have an alarm to get up, a notification to take my meds and brush my teeth, an alarm to feed the dog, a notification to make calls, an alert to start work on work from home days, a notification to take my lunch on in office days… it just goes on and on.

And it’s just gotten worse now that I am basically the caretaker for my father and his home. There’s SO much admin involved in taking care of an elderly person and an old house. If I’m not making calls or sending messages to doctors, I’m making calls or sending messages to maintenance or repair people.

I just want to be on my own with just my stuff to take care of because that’s enough! I’d love to be able to just have to worry about paying my own bills and getting to work.

Just needed to vent.

Future budgeting & targets

When I go to assign money in future months, any categories with a "Refill up to" category don't ask me to budget more money if I haven't spent any in this month yet. For example, I have a transportation category that I assign $75/month. I was assigning a paycheck to July earlier this month when I hadn't spent any in the transportation category yet. It was marked as fully funded in July. And now it's marked as over-budgeted for July since I put another $75 in there. I have Target Mode set to Planned target, which I thought would make it ask for the full amount each month, but it's still doing the same thing. Do I need to change all my targets?

Retirement health savings account worth it?

I have access to contribute to a retirement health savings account through work. It’s a post-tax contribution into an interest bearing account (can’t remember how much interest). It’s not like an HSA where I can invest the money. The company doesn’t contribute anything.

I also can contribute to a 403b pre-tax. I’m already contributing 15% of my paycheck to that, so I’ve gotten the full 2% employer match.

Does it make more sense to put more in the 403b and not do the RHSA? Or is the RHSA worth it?

Edited to add: It’s a Retirement Medical Savings account, not an RHSA so it’s different from a health savings account. Contributions are taken out of pay post-tax, but interest grows tax-free. According to the booklet, interest will “generally equal the one-year Treasury Bill rate in effect in September, plus 1%”. And “the interest credit will never be less than 5% or more than 12%”.

It’s also longer than I thought to become vested - when participants reach age 55 and have completed 5 years of service.

Also of note: if a participant dies before using all the funds, the spouse can use the remaining funds for eligible costs. Or if both die or there is no spouse, funds are distributed to beneficiaries.

Tracking paycheck deductions?

Maybe not a Zerosum specific question but just wondering if/how others do this. I recently started a new job where I actually have benefits like a 401k and retirement health savings account and health insurance. Technically, I’m making more than I was before, but my take home pay is less because of the deductions for the benefits things.

I’m wondering how to track these in Zerosum… I want to track them for a couple of reasons - to easily see how much I’m paying over time for some of the benefits I’m not sure I’ll use so I can maybe opt out of them next time, to have a better overall picture of my net worth, and to help the anxiety of thinking I’m actually poorer now because my take home pay is less (if I see where it’s going regularly, it will reassure me that I am still building up savings with some of it).

Do I do a split transaction with my paycheck each week? How do I track the retirement accounts contributions that aren’t on budget? I don’t actually have those dollars to spend, so they can’t get given jobs like the take home part of my pay.

Trying to wrap my head around how to set a goal…

I have a goal that I want to save $1500/year by the end of December. I’ve had this goal for a while and luckily haven’t had to use it, so it’s built up to $3,000. How do I set this up in my new budget so it asks me to assign a certain amount each month? Because I assigned the $3000 that I already have saved, it thinks the goal is achieved. Do I have to make it due the end of June 2026 to reset it for next month?

New and confused about app

I am contemplating switching to ZeroSum and it looks good so far on my computer. But I like being able to see my budget when I’m out and not at my computer. I know I could just use a browser but I keep seeing people saying you can set it up on a phone as an app from the website. How do I do that?

I’m on iOS.

YNAB Together alternatives?

I’m exploring YNAB alternatives (obviously) but I need to be able to run two budgets and share one of them with my father & sister. YNAB Together and being able to add multiple budgets makes this easy… is there any other app that has these features? I’d prefer one that has desktop & mobile app, if it exists.

Business checking account without articles of incorporation required?

Is it possible to open a business checking account anywhere without articles of incorporation? I'm trying to set one up for my father who has a sole proprietorship and lives in a state that doesn't require any registration for one. There are no articles of incorporation or anything like that, though he now has an EIN. I started the application with American Express as they seemed to have a good fee-free account, but although it kept mentioning sole proprietorship through the application, it still requires state certified articles of incorporation to finish the application.

His business is renting a beach cottage that honestly doesn't make enough to cover bills most years. If it does make a profit, it will be a few hundred dollars. He recently put the property in a trust and the lawyers we're working with said we need a separate account for it because of the trust.

Commute from Woburn to Charlestown?

Does anyone drive from Woburn to Charlestown for work? I would need to be in Charlestown for 7:30 am and would be leaving at 4pm or a little after. How’s the traffic at those times? Do I leave at 6:30 am or can I leave a little later?

In Woburn I’m near the 95/93 interchange and in Charlestown it would be near the Navy Yard.

MobileHelp medical alert system?

Has anyone used the MobileAlert medical alert system, specifically the classic cellular one? I’m looking for any experiences, or recommendations for other companies.

My father doesn’t leave the house without either me or my sister, so it only has to function in the house. We don’t need GPS, but fall detection would be good. And he’s not too particular about style.

First taste of real confusion

My father went into the hospital on Friday after falling. He was really wobbly on his feet, so they weren’t letting him get up but having him use a urinal bottle & bed pan. He was fine when I visited yesterday, though ready to go home. But his blood pressure was way up so they wanted to keep him to make sure they got it controlled.

Then this morning they call me saying he doesn’t know where he is and is being aggressive about not being able to get up. He can’t understand why he can’t walk on his own and needs to stay in the hospital. He refused to take all his medications, both the ones he usually takes and the new blood pressure one. And he wouldn’t eat. He hadn’t had anything since the afternoon before.

When I got there maybe 30 minutes after they called me, he wouldn’t even look at me and would barely answer direct questions. He kept saying he was being held captive and just wanted to leave there in a bag (as in, not alive).

I don’t even know if I have a question, but I needed to vent to people who will understand. I have no idea if this is going to be a common thing as this progresses, but I don’t know if I can do this if it is. It’s already difficult enough with our house not really set up for someone on a walker (they finally got him up and he was walking on his own with the walker). There’s just not enough space. But we can’t afford assisted living but have too much for Medicaid. Even if we spend down his assets, he gets a monthly pension that would probably disqualify him. I just don’t know what to do.

Living will vs. DNR

My father is currently in the hospital. It’s not critical, they don’t think, but they did ask about what measures he wants taken if he becomes critical. He said he doesn’t want them to take extensive measures to keep him alive and I said he also has a living will that states this (though I didn’t have a copy of that at the time).

Is this the same as having a Do Not Resuscitate order? I’m so confused with all these different terms and the levels of care they seem to apply to!

Which do I contribute to? Or does it matter? I don’t think I’ll have the funds to max out the 403b (I’m over 50, so I understand the limit is $32,500).

I’m about to start a new job that offers a 403b plan, with an automatic 2% company contribution without me having to contribute at all. I also have traditional and Roth IRAs from previous jobs and being self-employed.
