A water snake I found at the U-Pick farm in Miami County, Kansas!
My father kept telling me that I needed to get away from him because of what it was a venomous snake? (Please note I was 6 ft away anyways). How could anything this derpy be Venomous? I used this photo to educate him about "happy eye" snakes. He had never noticed that some have round pupils.
Edit: haha You guys I can identify the snake. I did not use eye shape to identify the snake. I use the eye shape to explain to my 60-year-old father who was so afraid of snakes that he kills every snake and would have tried to kill this one. If I did not find some type of way to show him that the snake has a harmless cute animal, I decided to use the round pupils. It's very hard to get through to this man at the animal is not going to hurt him. My actual conversation with my father discussed the eye ridging as well, but I didn't realize you guys would need to be told that. It seems that Orange got what I meant.
The area this photo is taken in is within range of three venomous snakes: the prairie rattlesnake and the copperhead, Occasionally a Massasauga Rattlesnake ends up in the surrounding prairie lands so I'll go with 3 not 2, but not in KC itself.
Don't ID snakes based off eye shape but feel free to use range, eye ridge, eye shape, color, and markings all together like I did before talking to my dad.
Thanks!
