Why doesn’t Galo Olivares get more work? It feels like he should be alongside someone like Greg Fraser.

Obviously there’s the stuff that happened with Roma where supposedly he was the DP of the film, which went on to win an Oscar for cinematography, but he signed an NDA and his credit was downgraded to “collaborating cinematographer.” That might have blunt some of his Hollywood prospects.

But he shot Alien: Romulus. Which is a really incredible looking film, feels like he naturally would be someone like Greg Fraser who’s in demand for big productions like a Batman film or a Star Wars film or something. His credits as a DP are incredibly thin and the only thing he has lined up is the Romulus sequel which has had pre production issues.

Why did Apple push for Drive in Original song for F1 when Just Keep Watching and Lose My Mind were more popular?

I suppose the answer is they thought Ed Sheeran was more palatable for the music branch and would have resulted in a song nomination. But considering they didn’t nominate it and only shortlisted it. Why didn’t they push for the two songs that actually charted in the U.S.?

I know there’s a pop bias in the branch unless you’re Lady Gaga, but surely the popularity of those songs would have helped if Apple pushed them more. Ed Sheeran has declined in reputation and popularity, and someone like McRae was having a moment.

Even outside of that Lose My Mind and Just Keep Watching are more in line with the films score

What makes production sound cheap?

I ran into a TikTok that showed the difference between Meghan Trainor’s Shimmer and Tate McRae’s Just Keep Watching. They both have similar structures, I suppose (I don’t know anything about music, similar beats maybe?) But Trainor’s song sound cheap to me while McRae’s song sounds expensive.

It feels like there’s a weight to McRae’s song that is lacking in Trainor’s. As if McRae used better equipment or software or real instruments, and Trainor used whatever free versions of those were available.

I don’t know how else to describe it and I don’t know if I’m even identifying the problem correctly. But there are often times when I feel like the production is rich and when it is poor. And I would like to know why that is.

Why isn’t there a lot of American representation in the neo-soul/traditional-pop/pop-jazz area?

There’s a few artists that I can think of that are American that lean into it. Mostly Jon Baptiste, but some other artists that lean more R&B like Leon Thomas or Samara Joy.

But if you look at what’s mostly taking up that space in terms of attention it’s a lot of British artists. Olivia Dean, Raye, Sienna Spiro, Lola Young. Ten years ago the two people at the forefront of the genre were Adele and Sam Smith. The exception to British people is Laufey who is Icelandic/Chinese.

I’m confused as to why the genre that seems to be derived from American music doesn’t actually have a lot of American musicians visible in the genre or even participation. Like the last big American name I can think of is Norah Jones. There’s also Seth MacFarlane and Liz Gillies but both mostly do stuff from the American song book.

So “drop dead” and “the cure” were terrible single choices rights?

I know drop dead was muted on released but the cure had a more positive reaction.

Now that the album has been out for a few days it seems like the clear songs that people have gravitated towards have been: honeybee, maggots for brains, and less. So why weren’t these the single pushes?
