New Bathyscape vs vintage

Good evening.

When I received an email from Blancpain and without reading the content, spotted a picture of a watch and I thought, wait it minute, I have something similar. It turns out it was the new vintage inspired Bathyscape, 70th Anniversary.

Both are 37mm. The vintage Bathyscape, from the 60s (or 1968 based on Blancpain announcement) uses an R337 caliber (signed Rayville SA, based on AS 1902), while the anniversary one (ref. 2849-11-SC), limited to 300 pieces, uses an in-house 1150 caliber with a gold rotor.

Help getting swing wire lugs

Hi,

I had a watch I bought originally without the swing wire lugs. I tried making custom ones with a 1.3mm steel wire, wire twisting tools and a grinder to fit the ends.

But I am not happy with the result. The lugs should look like the watch in the last picture.

Any idea where I can get something that looks similar?

Thanks

Lathe - Vector 48 or Wolf Jahn

Hi,

While searching for Lorch or Boley 8mm, I stumbled upon these two Lathes, Vector 48 and Wolf Jahn, both 8mm.

What do you think about these? They seem pretty complete as well.

Thanks.

Which precision drill bits do you use for drilling steel?

Hi,

I have been using these drill bits from Aliexpress, but they fail big time against steel (such as broken steel screws). They basically break relatively easily, worse, sometimes I end up drilling against a broken drill bit.

What do you use or recommend instead?

Thanks.

Screw driver blades - Bergeon vs Kwong Yuen

Hi,

I have been using Kwong Yuen screw drivers for a while now. They are OK but I am wondering if they are really OK. I tend to sharpen the blades quite often when the tips break. I guess this is because I usually work on rather stubborn screws from rusted or very dirty movements.

I understand Bergeon blades are compatible with Kwong screw drivers. Did anyone here tried both blades? Any significant difference?

Btw, the screws that hold the blade often get loose on these Kwong Yuen. I use UV glue to hold them as they are easy to remove when needed. Is this the same with Bergeon screw drivers?

Thanks.

Second hand not moving with Electric movement UG 60 / LIP R184

Hi,

This is an electric movement from the 60s based on LIP R184 caliber.

In the video, you can see that the second hand tries to move but it does not while the balance wheel spins continuously but with low amplitude. I am not familiar with these movements.

When I put the watch dial down, the second hands "sometimes" moves then stops repeatedly.

What do you think is the problem?

Thanks

Staking set - a lot of anvils/hammers

Hi,

This looks like it has way too many anvil and hammers.

Useful? What do you think?

Airain Type 20 Chronograph

Hi,

Anyone familiar with French type 20 Chronographes?

This is an Airain Type 20 Chronograph with a Valjoux 222 (Flyback). The problem is with the case back. It looks different from every other similar model I've seen online. Last picture is what the case back should look like, notice the difference in the slots shape. In this watch it is shorter and thicker.

What do you think?

Thanks.

New arrivals

Hi,

Just wanted to share this. When I travel back to Europe, I collect some of the stuff I've shipped there, mostly from auctions. Some are for repair, like the Navitimer missing a pusher and a new crystal, or the Cyma clamshell that need a new crown.

What do you think, anything more interesting than the rest?

Follow up on removing heavy verdigris from movement

Hi,

Just some update.

In a previous post, I was asking about how to clean a chronograph movement with thick and difficult to remove verdigris.

I tried different methods, none worked, until I used plain and simple vinegar (adding bicarbonate didn't work). In the end, I managed to remove all of it by soaking the non steel parts in vinegar for 10-15 minutes and steel parts for 5 minutes. I had to scrub the verdigris with peg wood but it was easy to remove unlike before.

However, the whole process left a lot dark residue on all the parts (second picture, tarnish?) which was not easy to remove. I had to polish (lightly) the parts where I could access.

Also, apparently no steel part was damaged by the vinegar.

Thanks for the suggestions.

Problem with the date corrector level with Miyota 8215

Hi,

I have a Miyota 8215 where setting the date does not work. Crown at 1st (winding) and 3rd (time setting) positions works as expected, but not at the 2nd position to set the date. In the first picture, it appears that the date correction lever (2 in the picture) is not aligned with the part of the sliding clutch that sets the date (1 in the picture).

It does not appear to me the date correction lever is damaged. So not sure what could be the problem.

Any idea?

Thanks.

Anyone removed the bezel of this exact watch?

Hi,

I need to remove the movement from the case of this Omega with a 23.4 caliber. It is clearly a front loader (I removed the back screws that fix the movement), but I cannot remove the front bezel, there is no slit in between the bezel and the case.

Note I am trying to remove the bezel not the crystal.

Anyone worked on a case like this?

Thanks.

Omega - Apparently a front loader, but how to open?

Hi,

I need to remove the movement from the case of this Omega with a 23.4 caliber. It is clearly a front loader (I removed the back screws that fix the movement), but I cannot remove the front bezel (there is no slit in between the bezel and the case).

Did anyone service this type of Omega watch case?

Thanks.

Giving away three loving kittens.

We are moving soon and are looking for a caring, permanent home for our three kittens. We are giving them away, as our main priority is finding them a safe and loving environment. They are about three and a half months old and have been very well looked after. We have two boys and one girl, with the girl being the one on the right in the photo. They are incredibly affectionate, playful, and they do not bite. Because they have such a strong bond and rely on each, we strongly prefer that they be adopted all together.

To help them settle into their new home, we are including all their supplies for free as well. This includes their food bowls, their cozy house and their litter box.

Please only reach out if you can provide a loving home for them.

1940 JLC - Dial redone?

Hi,

This is a 34mm JLC watch for the 40s with a P478 movement. Do you think the dial was redone beside the hands and indices being relumed?

Thanks.

What is the problem with this mainspring?

Hi

This is for a Venus 178. I replaced a broken mainspring with one I got from cousinsuk for manual movements with matching measurements. However, when I wind the watch like 4 to 5 turns, it slips. I am not sure it slips at the level of the barrel or the arbor. From the photo, it looks like the end of the mainspring is not positioned against the extra space in the barrel wall. My guess it is slipping at the mainspring end level. But I don't see how and why.

Any suggestions? Wrong mainspring ending maybe?

Thanks

How would you fix this wheel's pivot

Hi,

This is a minute runner wheel from a Valjoux 22 and as you can see the tip is slightly bent. How would you fix this without breaking it? I have an unfortunate past experience with something similar and broke the tip.

Thanks

Cartier/Lecoultre chronographe?

I was following today an auction in ebay of a Lecoultre Chronograph in bad shape, with a Cartier signed dial and what appears to be UG 281 or 285 movement. It was sold at 6200 usd. Do you think this watch is authentic? If yes, the buyer would have made an excellent deal (once restored, it would be worth much more). I have seen elsewhere these pre 50s Cartier chronographes are crazy expensive.

Heavy Verdigris - Suggestion cleaning this movement?

Hi,

As you can see, this watch has been thru Nurgle chaos. I'd like to leave it for a night in a bath of Naphtha to loosen the verdigris, then a 5min ultrasonic bath in Acetone, disassemble then proceed normally to clean the parts. I already removed the balance wheel and pallet fork which I will clean manually.

Any suggestion?

Thanks
