Why EVs are not fun

Back in march I bought a used Tesla model 3 AWD LR for around 13k and installed an aftermarket ecu tune to unlock the full performance of the motor.

I figured a ~500hp beater for less than 15k would be the best bang for your buck “sports car” and it’d be a blast to drive.

I’ve finally come to terms that EVs are just not fun. I’ve tried so hard to convince myself that I like this cars performance but the reality is it’s no where close to as fun as a gas car.

I don’t think the engine/ “theatrics” are what’s holding it back either. It’s the acceleration curve. In a normal car you feel the car accelerate faster as the you reach the optimal rev range which is exciting and fun but in an EV it’s the opposite. You get a sudden jolt and then you feel the car quickly lose power as you climb in speed until around 60ish where it’s basically lifeless.

I wonder if automakers can find a way to make this tech engaging because I think EVs are quite cool and have a lot of potential.

Edit: Best way to describe the feeling is when you step on it:

Gas car: “Okay… fuck.. oh fuck oh fuck oh fuck”
Tesla: “Fuck… c’mon.. c’mon cmon cmon”

I can consistently do 0-60 in under 3.4sec and quarter mile times in the mid 11 second range but it’s just so bleh. I want to say throwing more power wouldn’t help but maybe once you hit 1,000hp like the plaid or lucid things are different 🤷‍♂️

How to xlookup/indexmatch columns with imperfect data?

Please help me. I have 2 columns with names from 2 different data sources and I’m trying to reconcile them.

Ones “first last” and the other is “Last, First”

The problem is that the data is not uniform and I have no control over it. There are a bunch of duplicates, misspellings, etc. One column might say “M&S” and the other “Projected M&S”

How do I use xlookup/indexmatch to reconcile these? I tried making a concatenation key but again the data is not uniform.

Is there another function or workaround I’m not thinking about?

Is it worth giving up my rent controlled apartment?

I’ve got a job offer near San Jose for $165k + a title bump but would require me to be in person 5 days per week. This about 40k more than I currently make and would be pretty good for my career.

The problem is I currently have a really nice 2bd apartment in SF that’s rent controlled and is cheaper than anything else in the market here or in SJ.

I’ve determined that the commute would absolutely not be worth it but what about giving up a rent controlled apartment? I signed from an old couple during covid when they were desperate to have someone move in and I kinda feel like i’ve hit the lottery on my housing.

That being said 40k is a lot of money to turn down…

Money vs WLB?

Current job:
- $95k
- 3 days in office (45min commute)
- 25 pto days + sick/flextime + long shutdown in Dec.
- Great wlb (leave at 5, no weekends, little stress)
- S-tier job security (basically gov)
- Expected ~15k raise in 2 years but slow growth after
- My own office

Offer:
- $135k + ~10% bonus
- 4 days in office (45-55min commute)
- 15 pto days + sick
- Much more corporate: longer hours, more stress, more responsibilities
- Potentially a lot more growth and opportunities
- F100 much better name recognition
- Open floor plan…

Offer should be a no brainer on paper right? My gf really wants me to take it but I honestly don’t know.

Was waymo subsidized before?

Was Waymo subsidized in SF a couple years ago? It used to be the same price if not cheaper than Uber but was that just to increase their user base?

Nowadays it seems like it’s always more expensive than uber including tips. Finding it hard to justify when I can get an uber for often half the price.

How to improve?

A couple months ago I started in an FP&A related role as a financial analyst in what I thought would be my “dream job”.

I’ve pretty quickly discovered that the job is much less technical than I anticipated and i’m not going to get an opportunity to touch modeling, building dashboards, or complex reporting.

That being said I don’t plan on ever leaving but I still want to develop the skills in case I’m ever forced to. I have the title and brand name but what are some resources I can use on my own time to build my skillset?

Cars for douchebags

As I get older in my 20s I realized I never got to be a douchebag and have fun.

What’s the most douchebag, fun, selfish cars you can buy? Think like straight piped civic.

Need something that’s stupid fun that I can still blame immaturity on before it’s too late.

Free solo climbing isn’t cool, it’s reckless

I just watched Free Solo and am utterly unimpressed.

There is nothing cool about free soloing it’s just unnecessarily dangerous. The climbing isn’t more technical or special it’s just removing basic safety equipment for no reason.

Imagine celebrating someone for winning a race on the Nurburgring but being the first person to do it without a helmet. Like that doesn’t make the feat anymore impressive you’re just making it more dangerous for yourself. It’s the exact same race!

What about skiing? If I’m flying down a double black diamond without a helmet on you think people are cheering at the bottom or taking my ski pass…

Why M3 over MY

I’ve never driven a MY and am thinking of upgrading my 2018 M3 to a highland MY but was wondering if there’s a reason I should stick with another M3.

I don’t really need the space but I guess it would be nice to have.

Is the MY a lot heavier or less “sporty” or do they feel the same while driving.

Real answer is a test drive but i’m just curious about your experiences if you’ve owned both.

Golden handcuffs

Not learning, not growing, not progressing, and decades away from retirement.

But my job has great WLB, pays well, is stable, and overall low stress.

I obv don’t want to leave but i’m worried about not developing real skills in my 20s that i’ll need if I ever want to leave or move up to management.

It’s basically just glorified data entry with a huge amount of consequences if I fuck up, thus the high pay.

I’m not planning on leaving but also i’m not not planning on leaving - Idk, thoughts?

Income vs car?

I made a post in r/ carguys and didn’t get one useful response.

What amount would you be comfortable spending on a car for a guy who makes: 70k, 100k, or 130k

Think typical young single male, regular expenses, isn’t blowing money on a high rise apartment or vacations.

Looking for advice that’s between Dave Ramsey and your friend Jim who blows his whole paycheck on his car.

I’m well aware that everyone’s situation is different. I’m looking for your personal rule of thumb as someone who’s who enjoys cars and doesn’t treat them as an appliance. I’m just trying to gauge what car guys are comfortable with spending!

Coast vs FIRE

This is a FIRE subreddit so ofc I expect there to be bias towards FIRE, but I wanted opinions anyways.

As someone who is early in my career how would you compare coasting at a job you enjoy vs grinding at a job you don’t enjoy but achieving FIRE?

I was recently let go from decently well paying position that had great opportunities for growth in title/pay but had awful WLB and was a high stress “grind” like environment.

My new job has much better WLB and most of my coworkers have spent their entire careers here but the pay/opportunities will not keep up with other fast paced roles (think gov adjacent).

Is the rat race worth it if it means achieving FIRE in my late 40s? Or it worth considering just coasting at a job I enjoy until mid 60s.

Part of me wants to just enjoy life and coast but also i’m worried once I’m older my will to work will not be the same as it is now 🙃

I understand AI now.

Finally got approved for Agentic AI use in excel.

Good fucking lord.

I always thought I was decent at excel but nope I’m actually a damn baby at it. This shit is writing formulas I didn’t know were possible and trying to understand what’s pulling what and how these workbooks operate is a nightmare. There’s genuinely levels to this shit.

Craziest part? What takes Claude 10 mins to compute and execute would take me literal days to setup a similarly styled workbook.

The discouraging thing is I don’t think I will ever be this advanced nevertheless as quick or efficient. On the bright side my job has a lot of personal relationships and operates in a very secure industry, but still it’s a scary new world.

One thing I miss about public accounting

The people. Genuinely met some of the funniest people working in public.

Would be eating lunch everyday with 6 randoms, aged 22-40, 3 of them on an H1B visas, and yet somehow we would be having the best time.

Also met so many cool people in my starting cohort that I still regularly talk to.

Industry is better in just about every way but OML are the people are just so regular; no one makes jokes on teams or wants to go for coffee runs. It's almost comical how default all of my cowokers are. All great people but man I miss the personal connections you make in public.

Does utilization affect PTO?

If I’m unstaffed but am still required to go into the office and look for work/study for the CPA this hurts my utilization right?

But taking PTO also hurts my Utilization?

So if I’m unstaffed at I essentially losing out on PTO because I can’t afford to further hurt my Utilization, thus shouldn’t take vacation later in the year?

Ingenext Ghost issues

I just plugged in my module and am getting these warnings. Does anyone know how to clear these. Nothing felt off when unplugging/plugging things in.

Edit:

Can’t clear the 2 errors and the passenger side door is stuck open on the screen when it’s actually closed. I’ve tried disconnecting the module several times and the errors clear when I plugged the original clip back in so i’m guessing I got a faulty module or i’m missing one of their updates.

Features all work. I have increased power, auto door unlocks etc. Just can’t clear errors + door.

Can I buy a manual if I live in SF?

I’m thinking about an NB Miata.

I know how to drive manual (although probably not very well) and have been wanting to upgrade my boring commuter to something more fun.

Is driving a manual a pain in the ass if I live in SF? I live right next to a steep hill that I have to parallel park on almost every day and I’m pretty bad at stopping on a hill in a manual… I used to rely on the hand brake trick and maybe burning the clutch lol.

But is it doable to practice/learn? Will it always be a pain in the ass or will it feel normal and easy after a couple months.
