Help me rescue a cat in a bad situation
Hi guys, I'm really desperate for help and/or reassurance right now.
My friend's parents live in the country in a big farmhouse and they have a dog and a cat that is pretty much wild. They really just feed him dry food. They never named him, took him to a vet, or got him neutered. Legally it's not even really their cat.
Now I've seen this cat get really messed up throughout the years: many years back he got bit by a fox or another wild animal (that's what we think at least) but his so-called owners did nothing to help him. They basically just left him that way and let him fend for himself. The cat was miraculously able to heal from this gash after several years spent just walking around with it. I honestly have no idea how this cat is still alive as the wound is huge and right around his neck. The fur doesn't even grow on there anymore.
Yesterday I saw the cat again and the wound on his neck has reopened. The owners and my friend are still not doing anything at all to help him and their dog is now licking his wound too which is probably not good.
I've been concerned about this cat for a while and vocal about it, this time around I told my friend I found a volunteer to come take the cat and cure him for free (mind you I live in Italy so there is no danger of the cat getting euthanized, we don't have cat shelters like that here). The cat would probably not come back as the volunteers would never allow it because obviously these people can't be trusted.
My friend straight up refused and said it's none of my business as that's not my house and not my cat. Now obviously this cat is enduring a lot and denying him medical care is animal abuse. But the volunteers won't go take him without permission and calling animal control could just make things worse as they could easily walk up to the house, talk to the owner who could say he doesn't have a cat or doesn't know where the cat is, and leave without doing anything at all to help.
I'm considering going over there and getting the cat myself. This cat is practically a stray and they do not have legal ownership of it, so I'm allowed to do this. The problem is I don't know the area well, and I've only ever seen this cat on their property. All around the house is just fields (there's like two other houses nearby).
I can't go get the cat at night though, because then I'd have to keep it in my house overnight. It's flea and tick infested, and it's an outdoor cat, so it would probably freak out even though it's not scared of people and really friendly. Also I have a cat of my own so I absolutely cannot have him be in contact with her.
I'd have to trap him during the day somehow. I'm really scared of getting caught but I think if I drive further up the road and put out some good smelly food maybe he'll come out.
My question is how to arrange this exactly. How far away can cats smell food from? Could this cat realistically leave their private property and roam the fields around the house? How far away do cats go from their main 'spot'? I'm really scared of going too close because it would alert their dog and it would start barking.
Please help and thank you for any advice.
If you know of a better subreddit where I could post this please let me know as well.
