Coping with a partner on nights, their need to study, and what I need

Hi all,

My partner is currently undertaking quite a brutal training programme, which at the moment involves a lot of night shifts.

They find them difficult and, honestly, I don’t know how they do it. But I’m finding that I’m burning out myself during these periods of nights.

I find that for the first few days I can be the partner I want to be: supportive and caring and I take on the extra household responsibilities without too much difficulty. But by around day 4, I’m over it. I know this also coincides with their cumulative lack of sleep, work stress and pressure further draining them, so by the end of the run of nights we’re both pretty depleted.

We’ve ended up in a rotten cycle of arguments as they finish their night shifts or on their first day off afterwards, and it’s becoming clear that this isn’t sustainable for either of us. I really don’t want this to continue.

I want to support them through the difficult periods of training, but I also need to work out how to look after myself and maintain my own capacity while taking on increased responsibilities.

For partners of doctors/medics who have been through this . How do you actually cope with the night shift periods? Is there anything that makes this easier for you as the partner?

I’d especially love to hear from people who have been doing this for a few years rather than just surviving a single rotation. I’m really interested in how you balance being supportive with not completely burning yourself out

Coffee tasting experiences

Hi everyone!
My partner and I are big coffee people and we’d love to do a coffee tasting experience (like wine tasting but with coffee) to see what notes we like.
Any ideas on who offers this? Also happy to travel to the lakes or Durham

Book clubs with strong book discussion

Hi everyone,

Fairly new to the area. Looking for a book club that I can discuss books, and have thought provoking convos about fiction. I typically read more 'serious' type fiction books. To give an idea a lot of booker long listers and other books along that vein!

Went along to a Chapter25 night and both the book and the setting weren't quite me (virtually no book discussion, and the book wasn't really what I read).

Would be happy to travel to Sunderland, Durham etc. for the right setting. Thank you!

Our Wives Under the Sea by Julia Armfield. My thoughts

Spoilers!! But would love to discuss this!

I loved this book. It has me still thinking and reflecting on it around 10 days after finishing it. I have a few thoughts on the plot/metaphors.

>!I have been wondering if Leah never came back from her mission, or if she never actually went on a mission but maybe passed away/disappeared another way? I wonder if Mira's way of coping with Leah's death is to have this narrative. If Mira can tell herself that Leah was in the sea (her happy place) when something awful happened to her, and Leah's diary entries are the fiction of what Mira thinks Leah could have been doing (like the partners lost in space!) makes the tragedy, or not knowing easier to deal with? !<
>!I wonder too if when Mira went to 'The Centre' to collect Leah, if Mira was actually collecting Leah's remains or possessions (and not an alive Leah?). Was 'The Centre' where she collected these things a morgue/autopsy site or a police station?!<
>!I've wondered if the salt water baths were a way of depicting preservation (e.g. brining), but that Mira couldn't preserve her memories or life with Leah in the way she hoped. !<
>! In returning Leah to the sea was Mira maybe scattering ashes? !<

I love a book with ambiguity and many avenues for interpretation. Definitely not a recommended read if you want something clear cut.
